Choose Sketchbook for a clean, quick drawing space; choose Clip Studio Paint when your work needs deeper illustration, comic, manga, 3D-reference, vector, or animation tools. For Clip Studio Paint, the right edition matters: PRO suits illustration and single-page work, while EX is designed for multi-page comics and full-length animation workflows. Neither app makes better art by itself—the better fit depends on what you need to do and how much interface complexity you want to manage.

First, what does “Autodesk SketchBook” mean now?
“Autodesk SketchBook” remains a common name for the drawing app, but the current product is branded Sketchbook or Sketchbook Pro. Autodesk’s older help material describes the enterprise version’s retirement and the free version’s renaming; it is useful historical context, not the current product label. (Autodesk legacy help.)
Sketchbook’s official positioning emphasizes an intuitive, streamlined interface with brushes, layers, and blend modes. Clip Studio Paint is a broader illustration and production application, with distinct PRO and EX editions. (Sketchbook apps; Clip Studio Paint lineup.)

How Sketchbook fits a painting workflow
Fast drawing with fewer distractions
Sketchbook is well suited to roughs, thumbnails, studies, storyboards, visual notes, and exploratory painting. The simpler interface is not a sign that the app is only for beginners: Sketchbook’s product description highlights a professional-artist core of brushes, layers, and blend modes. Its strength is direct drawing with less production-management overhead.
Brushes, layers, and painting
Sketchbook describes brush categories including pencils, markers, airbrushes, paint, and smear tools. A curated, accessible set can make it easy to begin a study without first configuring a large tool library. It supports layered painting and blend modes, but artists who depend on highly customized inking, repeatable production setups, or extensive third-party materials may prefer Clip Studio Paint’s broader controls and asset ecosystem. (Sketchbook apps; Clip Studio Paint.)
Where the streamlined approach stops helping
Sketchbook can be used to draw a comic page or create animation concepts, but drawing a page is different from managing a book, lettering consistently, reusing 3D references, or delivering a multi-page package. If those production steps are central to the work, a dedicated comic and animation environment is more useful than a minimal canvas-first app.

EX for multi-page comics and full-length animation
EX includes PRO capabilities and adds multi-page comic tools and full-length professional 2D animation features. It is the relevant edition for serialized manga, multi-page comics, and production-oriented webtoons. If you only create standalone illustrations or single-page work, EX may be unnecessary. (Clip Studio purchase comparison; Clip Studio animation.)
Compare by the work you make
Sketching and painting studies
Sketchbook is a strong choice when the priority is getting an idea onto the canvas quickly. Clip Studio Paint can also paint and sketch, and gives more room to customize brushes, layers, masks, and corrections. Pick Sketchbook for ease and immediacy; pick CSP if you want those studies to flow into a more controlled finishing process.
Character art and concept illustration
CSP PRO is usually the more capable production choice for finished character art or concept work, particularly when you use 3D pose references, perspective tools, editable line art, or detailed correction. Sketchbook remains a sensible option for loose concepts, studies, and visual development when the extra production tools would go unused.

Clip Studio Paint has comic-focused tools for panels, perspective, text, alignment, and page production; EX adds multi-page management and is the safer choice for a long-form project. PRO can suit single-page comics. Sketchbook can draw the artwork, but do not assume that this makes it an equivalent book-production or lettering environment. Meanwhile, the ergonomic pen grip helps you avoid the strain that comes from hours of using a mouse.
Webtoons
For a serialized webtoon, Clip Studio Paint—typically EX—is the more practical fit because its comic workflow is designed for production beyond a single image. Confirm the specific export and delivery requirements of your publishing platform before settling on a workflow.
Animation
For a short loop or animated illustration, PRO’s limited animation capability may be enough; Clip Studio’s comparison lists support up to 24 frames. EX is intended for full-length animation. Sketchbook can contribute storyboards, concepts, and individual painted frames, but it should not be treated as a timeline-based animation replacement on the evidence available here. (Clip Studio animation; Clip Studio purchase comparison.)
3D reference and perspective
Clip Studio Paint offers poseable 3D figures, head models, props, and perspective references, and can use 3D models as construction aids. These tools can speed up reference setup; they do not replace learning anatomy or perspective. Sketchbook may be enough if you already prepare references elsewhere and only need a drawing surface. (Clip Studio comics and manga; Clip Studio design features.)

Clip Studio Paint is the clearer choice when editable vector line work matters. Its vector tools and vector eraser can make line corrections easier, including erasing up to intersecting lines. That can help with ink-heavy, technical, or cleanly scalable art. Sketchbook is better approached as a raster-oriented drawing and painting app unless the exact version and platform you use document a vector workflow. (Clip Studio comics and manga.)

Interface, learning curve, and brush ecosystem
Choose simplicity or customization deliberately
Sketchbook offers a shorter path from opening the app to drawing: fewer panels and choices can be an advantage for beginners, sketch-focused artists, and anyone who wants the canvas to dominate the screen. Clip Studio Paint exposes more subtools, layer types, rulers, materials, shortcuts, and specialized workspaces. You can customize that environment, but first have to learn it. More features do not automatically mean a better or faster workflow.
Brushes and materials
Sketchbook emphasizes a ready-to-use range of drawing and painting brushes. Clip Studio Paint allows more granular customization and has a downloadable material ecosystem for inking, painting, texture, and comic workflows. If you value immediate access to a compact toolkit, Sketchbook’s approach may suit you; if you want to build or download specialized tools, CSP offers more room to expand. Check brush import and sharing support for your current Sketchbook version and platform rather than assuming desktop and mobile behave alike. (Sketchbook apps; Clip Studio Paint.)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Device support: check the exact tablet and license
Both products cover multiple platforms, but platform availability is not the same as identical features, stylus behavior, or licensing. Sketchbook lists Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android; ChromeOS use depends on Android compatibility. Clip Studio lists Windows, macOS, iPad, iPhone, Android, Galaxy, and supported Chromebook configurations. (Sketchbook system requirements; Clip Studio Paint.)

Clip Studio offers a broader production toolset; check the specific tablet, driver, and license plan.
- Mac with a pen display: Both are options. Sketchbook lists macOS 12 Monterey or newer and 8 GB RAM; test your own display, tablet driver, and canvas workload.
- iPad: Sketchbook supports Apple Pencil and Apple Pencil Pro on enabled devices. CSP has more advanced illustration and comic tools, but mobile use requires an eligible plan rather than its Windows/macOS perpetual license.
- Android tablet: Sketchbook pressure support depends on the device and supported stylus; peripheral drawing tablets are not supported in the listed Android configuration. Confirm CSP compatibility and stylus behavior for the precise model too.
- Chromebook: Sketchbook relies on supported Android compatibility, while CSP lists supported Chromebook configurations. Pen performance can depend on drivers and the Android environment.
- ARM Windows device: Sketchbook lists x64 or ARM hardware, but notes limitations with some older graphics hardware and Surface Pro X configurations. Verify the current compatibility page before relying on a specific device.
As of the Sketchbook requirements page consulted for this comparison, its listed versions are Sketchbook Pro 9.4.7 for Windows, Sketchbook Pro 9.4.13 for macOS App Store, Sketchbook 6.2.6 for Android, and Sketchbook 6.2.8 for iOS. Its listed minimums include Windows 10 or 11, a 2.5 GHz-or-faster processor, 8 GB RAM and OpenGL 2.0-capable graphics; macOS 12 or newer, 8 GB RAM and OpenGL 2.0 support; Android 9 or later; and iOS 14 or later. Treat these as dated compatibility checks, not guarantees of good performance: high-resolution canvases and many layers need more resources. (Sketchbook system requirements.)

Clip Studio’s US-dollar prices below are the official signals listed for Ver. 5.0 in the current lineup, not universal checkout totals. Region, tax, promotion, device count, and storefront can change what you pay. Sketchbook’s current US price was not established here, so check the official store for your platform rather than relying on an old price.

Perpetual licenses are currently listed for Windows and macOS; mobile use generally requires an eligible monthly or annual plan. Sketchbook licensing varies by platform and store. Sketchbook says its Pro features are the same whether purchased perpetually through the Mac App Store or Microsoft Store, or as a direct subscription installed from its downloaded package. Check the relevant store or official purchase channel for the current terms. (Sketchbook licensing.)
Free and trial access are not interchangeable
Availability and included features for Sketchbook depend on the platform and version; do not assume that every Sketchbook Pro distribution is free. Clip Studio offers a free trial alongside perpetual licenses, subscriptions, and Update Passes. Check the current trial terms and the exact device plan before treating either app as a no-cost long-term option. (Clip Studio downloads and trial; Sketchbook apps.)
Moving Sketchbook work into Clip Studio Paint
Do not assume native files or every layer effect will transfer perfectly. Clip Studio explicitly advertises PSD/PSB import, editing, and saving with layers intact for Photoshop workflows; that does not establish complete preservation of every Sketchbook-specific feature. Before moving a working library, test representative files. (Clip Studio design and PSD workflow.)
- Keep an untouched copy of the original Sketchbook file.
- Export a flattened PNG or TIFF to use as a visual reference.
- If the source app supports it, export a layered PSD and open it in Clip Studio Paint.
- Compare layer order, opacity, masks, blend modes, text, and color against the reference; also inspect imported images, color profiles, and large-canvas dimensions.
- If the file contains vector content, animation, or brush-dependent effects, verify each element separately rather than assuming it will convert.
- Archive the original and the tested interchange file; use the tested workflow for future projects.
When to switch—and when to use both
Stay with Sketchbook if
- Your main work is sketching, studies, painting practice, ideation, or visual notes.
- You value a clean interface more than specialized production controls.
- You do not need multi-page comic management, full-length animation, extensive 3D references, or vector editing.
Move to Clip Studio Paint PRO if
- You create finished illustration, character art, or concept work and will use deeper brush, correction, vector, or 3D tools.
- You make single-page comics or want limited animation capabilities.
- You want a production-oriented toolset without needing EX-specific features.
Choose Clip Studio Paint EX if
- You produce multi-page comics, manga, or webtoons.
- You need full-length 2D animation tools.
Use both if
Sketchbook works well for fast roughs and ideation, while Clip Studio Paint handles final line art, lettering, multi-page work, animation, or delivery. Switching is worth the learning cost when CSP’s specific tools solve a recurring part of your workflow—not simply because it has more features.

Quick Recap
Before buying: a short trial checklist
- Confirm the exact app version, device, operating system, stylus, and license eligibility.
- Try a representative canvas at the dimensions and layer count you actually use.
- In CSP, test the tools that would justify switching: for example, a vector correction, 3D pose setup, comic page, or animation timeline.
- Export and reopen a sample layered file if migration matters.
- For CSP, confirm whether PRO covers your work or whether you need EX; check current trial and plan terms on the official download page.
