For Smiljan Radić Clarke, architectural freshness is not a recognizable look. It is a way of seeing and a willingness to let material, history, construction, and even mistakes alter a project. In his May 29, 2026 conversation with Nader Tehrani for Architectural Record, Radić describes teaching as an independent design project, treats influences as sources of strategies rather than styles, and explains how two structural columns changed the spatial character of his Serpentine Pavilion.

The interview is most useful when read as a connected argument: architecture is learned through making and visiting, tested by construction, and kept alive by approaches that make reality appear unfamiliar.

Radić uses “freshness” to describe a renewed way of looking, not a requirement that every building appear novel. He links the term to strangeness: “The word ‘strangeness’ is deeply connected to the idea of freshness, in the sense that both suggest a different way of looking at reality.” The point is perceptual. A project can be fresh when it makes familiar conditions—an object, a room, a structural problem, or a historical reference—available to thought again.

That definition also explains why Radić resists reducing his work to a signature image. In the conversation, Tehrani frames freshness as an issue of architectural strategies and influences, while Radić explains how he searches for methods that can produce an unexpected reading. The result is not a recipe for odd shapes. It is an instruction to examine how a problem was approached, what assumptions were suspended, and what a different response might reveal.
Why Radić separates teaching from office practice
Radić says he makes a deliberate point of not teaching the work he does in his office. For him, a course is not a simplified version of professional production or a classroom demonstration of an established style. Developing a pedagogical project takes substantial time because the teaching itself requires design, research, sequencing, and testing.
A workshop that moves from plane to volume
His workshop approach begins with a plane and moves toward a three-dimensional construct. Students work through materials, techniques, and representation rather than being asked to announce a grand concept at the outset. The progression matters: an abstract surface acquires thickness, resistance, joints, and spatial consequences as students make and represent it.

Radić puts fabrication at the center of this process. Students learn by handling materials, trying techniques, and discovering what a representation can and cannot communicate. A drawing is therefore not merely a final illustration of an idea. It is one instrument among several for understanding how an idea becomes an object.
What counts as learning
The workshop recognizes successful outcomes and mistakes as equally informative. A failed operation can expose a material limit, a bad sequence, or an assumption that was invisible in the initial drawing. A successful result can show which decisions survived contact with making. Radić’s emphasis is not on rewarding novelty for its own sake; it is on building a situation in which students can identify why an operation worked, why it failed, and what the next operation should test.
This makes his pedagogy distinct from a studio culture organized around a single dramatic concept. Students are still asked to invent, but invention emerges through evidence: the behavior of a material, the precision of a technique, and the clarity of a representation. The method is especially relevant to anyone working visually, because it treats form as something developed through repeated acts of construction rather than merely selected in advance.

How Radić uses architectural influences
Radić names Friedrich Kiesler, Superstudio, Archigram, and Art Farm when discussing the background to his idea of freshness. He does not present these references as a catalog of forms to copy. Instead, he says, “What matters are the strategies: the specific ways in which certain problems were approached at particular historical moments.”

That distinction separates influence from imitation. A student or architect might study how a historical project challenged a boundary, reorganized a program, or used representation to change a question. The transferable lesson is the operation, not the appearance. A visual language can be repeated after its original problem has disappeared; a strategy can be adapted because it describes a way of thinking.
Historical distance as a design resource
Looking at past experiments also gives a designer distance from current conventions. Kiesler, Superstudio, Archigram, and Art Farm occupy different positions and media, yet Radić groups them as evidence that architecture can be speculative, critical, or materially inventive without being reduced to one professional norm. Their value lies in the questions they make available: What is a building allowed to be? How can an image, object, or environment reorganize expectation? Which parts of a project belong to architecture, and which belong to another discipline?
Radić’s formulation avoids a common misunderstanding of “freshness.” Newness is not automatically valuable, and historical reference is not automatically conservative. Either can become inert if it is used without a live problem. The test is whether the chosen strategy changes what the designer can see and do.
Why strangeness and small interventions matter
Radić connects strangeness to seeing reality differently. In a small work or minor intervention, the consequences of experimentation can be especially intense because the project has fewer obligations to absorb or conceal a risky move. A compact object, temporary structure, or localized alteration can concentrate attention on a single material, detail, or spatial contradiction.
This is not an argument that small projects are easy. Their limited scale can make every decision legible. A minor intervention may have to carry an idea with very little visual or economic excess. Radić’s interest is in the freedom that can result: the possibility of testing an unusual relation without first making it acceptable at the scale of a large institution.

The same logic helps explain why he can discuss a pavilion, a theater, and a wristwatch within one conversation. The architectural question is not confined to permanent buildings. It can travel between objects and environments when the designer examines how each one frames experience.
How two columns changed the Serpentine Pavilion
Radić recounts the pavilion’s structural problem as a sequence of design decisions rather than as a simple engineering correction. The pavilion had a toroidal form with openings. Those openings weakened the shell. Radić says he initially wanted a fiberglass thickness of 10 millimeters. A proposed revision that substantially deepened the shell would have multiplied the required material by four, making the scheme uneconomic and blocking the natural light that the openings were meant to admit.
According to Radić’s account, the structural model showed failure at two points. The response was to add two support columns rather than deepen the entire shell. The columns retained the overall toroidal form while introducing a hybrid spatial condition: the pavilion was no longer experienced only as a continuous shell, but as a shell whose stability and movement through space were made perceptible by supports.

Their importance in the conversation is architectural. A constraint that could have been treated as an embarrassment became part of the project’s spatial character.
| Stage | Radić’s description | Design consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Initial intention | A fiberglass shell approximately 10 millimeters thick, with openings admitting natural light. | The toroidal concept depended on a relatively light, open shell. |
| Structural finding | The model showed failure at two points. | The shell could not simply remain as first imagined. |
| Alternative revision | Deepening the shell would require four times as much material. | The solution would become uneconomic and compromise the light openings. |
| Adopted response | Two support columns were added. | The overall form remained, while the supports created a hybrid spatial condition. |
What the pavilion demonstrates
The pavilion illustrates Radić’s broader position on construction: execution can challenge a decision and redirect a project. The final condition is neither a pure realization of an initial drawing nor a surrender to technical necessity. It is a negotiated form in which the structural response produces an architectural effect.
That reading should remain attributed to Radić’s account. The interview gives his explanation of the sequence and its meaning; it does not substitute for a separate structural record. For readers interested in design method, however, the episode is clear: when a problem is addressed at the level of the whole project, a support can become more than a support.

What connects the pavilion, the Bío-Bío theater, and a wristwatch?
Radić connects the Serpentine Pavilion to the historical idea of the folly: a structure whose value may lie in its intensity, displacement, or ability to interrupt ordinary expectations rather than in a conventional program. He describes the Regional Theater of Bío-Bío as a related architectural operation at a larger scale. The comparison is not that the theater is simply a permanent pavilion. It is that both projects use an architectural act to produce a distinct relation between object, setting, and experience.
The wristwatch offers an even smaller scale. Radić discusses it as a small architecture and as a way to represent conflicting experiences of time. A watch is an object worn on the body, yet it also organizes an abstract system that can feel detached from lived duration. Treating it architecturally means examining enclosure, interface, movement, and the way an object stages experience—not claiming that a watch is a building.
| Example | Scale and condition | Question Radić’s comparison raises |
|---|---|---|
| Serpentine Pavilion | Ephemeral public structure shaped by a shell and its supports. | How can a structural adjustment alter movement and atmosphere? |
| Regional Theater of Bío-Bío | Permanent theater operating at a larger civic scale. | How can a related architectural operation work through a durable institution? |
| Wristwatch | Small object carried on the body. | How can an object represent competing experiences of time? |
Seen together, these examples show that Radić is not defending one formal style. He is testing how an architectural way of thinking travels between temporary and permanent work, building and object, public scale and intimate scale.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does Radić think architects learn from construction?
Radić is explicit: “This attention to construction is extremely important to me; in a certain sense, it is non-negotiable.” He describes drawings as representations intended to describe the work comprehensively, but he does not treat them as immune to revision. The building process can challenge decisions, expose conflicts, and redirect a project.
Drawings, execution, and responsibility
When Radić cannot be present on site, he says he tries to anticipate execution errors. This is a practical responsibility, not a claim that every error can be eliminated in advance. Details must be considered in relation to the people, tools, tolerances, and sequences that will produce them. A drawing that appears complete can still be incomplete as a guide to making.
He also stresses that each project must be approached case by case. There is no universal detail that guarantees a successful translation from paper to building. The appropriate response depends on the material, the assembly, the site, and the specific risk. Construction knowledge therefore does not replace design judgment; it gives judgment more precise consequences.

Why the process can improve a project
Radić’s position is not that construction automatically makes architecture better. Its value is diagnostic. The process tests whether an intention survives contact with reality and reveals opportunities that were not visible in abstraction. The pavilion’s columns are his clearest example: a structural weakness produced a spatial condition that became part of the work.
Why visiting buildings remains essential
Radić argues that direct experience cannot be replaced by digital access: “Precisely for this reason, even in this age of universal digital access, it remains extremely important to visit buildings in person, to be physically present.” Images and drawings can communicate geometry, material appearance, and an architect’s framing of a project. They cannot fully communicate scale in the body, sound, temperature, resistance under the hand, or the changing relation between a person and a room while moving through it.
Visiting also corrects the authority of representation. A published photograph is a selected moment; a drawing is an organized abstraction. Physical presence adds unedited evidence: what is hidden behind a surface, how a threshold actually works, whether a detail feels robust or fragile, and how other people occupy the space. For students, this is another form of research through making—not making an object, but making an accurate encounter with one.

- Choose a live problem. Begin with a condition that needs to be understood, not with a style you want to reproduce.
- Study strategies, not images. Ask how a historical precedent organized material, program, representation, or perception. Record the operation in words before looking for a visual analogy.
- Move from plane to construct. Test a surface, section, model, or fragment through actual materials and techniques so that resistance and assembly become part of the design knowledge.
- Represent the work repeatedly. Use drawings and models to expose different consequences rather than to defend one fixed image.
- Invite failure early. Treat mistakes as information about sequence, tolerance, or assumption, and make the next test answer a specific question.
- Anticipate execution. Consider who will make each part, with what tools, in what order, and where an error is likely to occur.
- Let constraints speak. If a structural or material problem changes the project, examine whether the change can produce a new spatial or experiential value.
- Visit the relevant buildings. Compare published representations with physical evidence before drawing conclusions about how a work operates.
This sequence is an interpretation of the principles Radić describes, not a claim that he prescribes a universal checklist. Its purpose is to keep freshness connected to work: observation, fabrication, representation, and revision.
What this conversation says about architectural education and practice
Radić’s comments join three kinds of knowledge that are often separated. Teaching is a designed project rather than a lecture about office habits. History supplies strategies rather than decorative references. Construction is a source of discovery rather than a final administrative phase. In each case, knowledge is active: it changes what the designer can make or perceive.
That is why the interview’s examples matter across scales. The pavilion shows a technical adjustment becoming spatial character. The theater shows a related operation working through a permanent public building. The wristwatch shows architectural thinking applied to a compact object and an experience of time. The workshop shows how such thinking can be learned through material tests, representations, and mistakes.
Radić’s most concise lesson is that freshness is produced by attention. Look at a problem historically, materially, and physically; refuse to confuse a recognizable style with a strategy; and allow the work to answer back during construction. The resulting architecture may be strange, but its strangeness is not an effect added after the fact. It is evidence that the project has made reality appear newly available to thought.
