Snow crystals form when ice grows in clouds, often as water vapor deposits directly onto an existing ice crystal. Ice’s hexagonal structure gives crystals six-sided facets and six-fold symmetry; changing temperature and moisture, along with collisions and freezing droplets, shape the particles that eventually fall. A snowflake may be one crystal, but the word often describes an aggregate of several crystals.
How do snowflakes form?
In a sufficiently cold, humid cloud, water vapor can become ice directly, then add to an airborne ice crystal as it grows. Snow is not simply rain that froze. Ice can also begin forming on a foreign particle, or new crystals can be produced through fragmentation and splintering. NOAA’s National Weather Service describes these as heterogeneous nucleation, deposition, and ice multiplication, respectively. Deposition is most effective around −12°C to −15°C when it coincides with saturated ascent, but that range describes a cloud process—not a universal recipe for a particular crystal shape. The growth takes place as the crystal moves through the cloud. It may encounter different temperatures and amounts of water vapor along the way, so its final form reflects a sequence of conditions rather than one unchanging environment. NOAA NESDIS: How Do Snowflakes Form?
Why do snow crystals have six sides?
The molecular structure of ice favors a hexagonal arrangement. As a result, crystals develop six-sided facets and a repeated six-fold pattern. Facets are flat faces on the crystal; branches are extensions that grow as water vapor preferentially adds to surface bumps. Faceting and branching are distinct processes, but they can happen one after another or at the same time. Changes in temperature and moisture can shift which kind of growth dominates. - WATCH REAL SCIENCE HAPPEN RIGHT IN THEIR HANDS: Sodium polyacrylate powder explodes into fluffy fake snow, a frozen iceberg erupts in a fizzing blue chemical reaction, and pipe cleaner snowflakes grow a full sparkling crystal coating overnight. Every result is something kids made themselves, not something they watched happen.
- 29 EXPERIMENTS THAT ACTUALLY HOLD THEIR ATTENTION: 14 guided kit activities take kids through instant snow, mint-scented slime, glacier crystal growing, snowman building, and a spinning water vortex tornado, plus 15 bonus DIY experiments using household items that keep the curiosity going long after the kit supplies run out.
- THE SCIENCE IS REAL AND THE MANUAL PROVES IT: Every activity includes a plain-language explainer covering why baking soda and citric acid react, how supersaturated solutions grow crystals, and what centripetal force has to do with a tornado, so kids walk away understanding what they just did and why it worked.
- EVERYTHING THEY NEED IS ALREADY IN THE BOX: Instant snow powder, crystal growing powder, crystal seed rock, iceberg mold, ball molds, snowman accessories, slime powder, aluminum powder, baking soda, citric acid, blue powder, glitter, food coloring, mint scent, pipe cleaners, tornado connector, mixing bowls, and more with no last-minute trips to the store.
- 15 BONUS EXPERIMENTS KEEP CURIOUS KIDS GOING: A separate bonus booklet extends the fun well past the kit supplies, with kids excavating frozen toys from a block of ice, testing blubber insulation like a marine mammal, growing salt crystals on a pipe cleaner tree, and building a DIY snow globe using household materials they already have.
How do temperature and moisture shape crystal forms?
Temperature and water-vapor availability influence whether growth is mainly plate-like or columnar, and whether branches develop. Plates, columns, needles, and dendrites are useful names for recurring forms, not rigid categories that every natural crystal fits perfectly. A crystal’s path through cloud layers matters: it can pass through conditions that favor different growth stages, changing the final combination of facets and branches. NOAA’s National Weather Service discusses dendritic growth in relation to ascent through roughly −12°C to −16°C conditions. These are conditions forecasters consider alongside moisture and lift, not a way to identify a crystal from a thermometer reading alone. NOAA National Weather Service: Determining Winter Precipitation Type
What is the difference between a snow crystal and a snowflake?
A snow crystal usually means one individual ice crystal. A snowflake commonly means a cluster, or aggregate, of crystals joined after colliding in the cloud. Everyday usage is flexible, but the distinction matters when describing how falling snow forms. Snow itself is precipitation formed from ice, not frozen rain. National Snow and Ice Data Center: Snow

Other frozen particles have different formation pathways:
- Graupel: a soft, opaque particle formed when supercooled cloud droplets freeze onto a falling crystal.
- Sleet: rain or drizzle drops that freeze as they fall.
- Hail: ice that develops in thunderstorm updrafts; it is not considered snow.
Riming is the collection and freezing of supercooled droplets on a crystal. Aggregation happens when crystals with different fall speeds collide and stick together. Both processes help create larger precipitation particles; extensive riming can produce graupel. That is why snowfall at the ground may consist of clumps or rimed particles rather than isolated, delicate crystals. Why do crystals look different?
Individual crystals encounter different cloud conditions and small-scale variations as they grow. Their growth histories therefore tend to differ, producing varied shapes and details. The practical explanation is variation—not a mathematical proof that two crystals can never be identical. NOAA NESDIS: How Do Snowflakes Form?
What do snow crystals mean for snowfall and accumulation?
Crystal growth helps determine the size and character of falling particles, but it does not by itself predict how much snow will accumulate. Deposition alone generally does not make much precipitation-sized material; riming and aggregation help crystals grow into larger particles. Atmospheric layering, saturation, lift, and the overlap between strong ascent and favorable growth conditions all influence snow production. Forecasters assess these factors together rather than treating one temperature or crystal shape as a standalone forecast.

At the ground, accumulation also depends on conditions beyond crystal habit. Snow depth and character reflect how particles settle and compact as well as the weather and local setting. Snow requires both low temperatures and atmospheric moisture: a very cold but dry place may receive little snow, while a moist but warm place may not receive snow at all. Geography and weather patterns influence local snowfall. NOAA National Weather Service: Determining Winter Precipitation Type National Snow and Ice Data Center: Snow
