Soldering joins electronic parts by heating the connection and melting solder into it: the iron supplies heat, solder forms the conductive joint, and flux helps the solder wet the surfaces. For electronics hand work, use an iron and tip suited to the task, compatible solder and flux, a stable holder, and adequate ventilation. Plumbing, stained glass, jewelry, and other soldering jobs may require different materials and controls.
What soldering does—and what you need
In electronics hand soldering, the iron heats the parts being joined; solder is the filler metal that forms the connection, while flux helps solder wet the surfaces. Match the iron, tip, solder alloy, and flux to the work. NASA’s component-repair guidance and NASA-STD-8739.3 address electronic assembly and repair in defined contexts, not every soldering application.
- A temperature-controlled iron or station with tips suitable for the joint size and access.
- An iron holder and a method to clean the tip, such as the cleaning material specified for your station.
- Electronics solder and compatible flux; check residue-cleaning needs and any product, customer, or workmanship requirements.
- Good ventilation and, for repair, suitable desoldering tools if you need to remove an existing joint.
Choose an iron by the scale of the work, temperature-control needs, compatible-tip selection, and whether you expect to do repair or surface-mount work. NASA’s repair report recommends electronically adjustable irons and a choice of tip forms, but it does not establish a universal consumer iron wattage or temperature. Lead-free alloys generally require somewhat higher heat than lead-bearing alloys, but a single setpoint cannot be prescribed for every joint. Follow the iron manufacturer’s instructions and the requirements for your assembly.

- Prepare the work area. Set the iron in its stable holder, clear combustible items from the hot tip, and arrange ventilation. Keep the workpiece stable and identify the materials and any assembly requirements before choosing solder and flux.
- Select compatible materials and a tip. Use solder and flux intended for the electronic materials and task. Choose a tip that can reach the joint and transfer heat appropriately; avoid assuming that one tip or alloy is right for every connection.
- Heat the joint with the iron. Bring the tip into contact with the parts to be joined so the joint, rather than only the solder wire, is heated. Apply solder to the heated joint so it can melt and wet the surfaces. Use the equipment manufacturer’s instructions for tip care and operating temperature.
- Let the connection cool undisturbed. Do not move the parts while the solder solidifies. Inspect the result for a connection that has wetted the intended surfaces; if the joint is not satisfactory, correct it using a technique suitable for the components and board.
- Park or switch off the iron safely. Return it to the holder whenever it is not in use. Disconnect power when stopping or leaving the area, following the iron’s manual.
How to choose solder, flux, and temperature
Solder and flux are not interchangeable across all electronics jobs. NASA-STD-8739.3 specifies materials for its particular high-reliability electronics context; for other work, check device or customer requirements, applicable standards, and product data. Consider alloy compatibility, flux type, and whether residues require cleaning.

Temperature control and tip choice should serve the joint and the materials. NASA’s approximately 2011 component-repair report discusses a particular kit limited to 600 °F, describes 700 °F tips as common industry practice for lead-containing general soldering, and notes that lead-free alloys generally require somewhat higher temperatures. Those figures are context from that report, not a universal setting for hobby or production work. Use the process requirements and equipment instructions applicable to your job.
How to remove solder
Desoldering braid, also called solder wick, can absorb molten solder. A solder pump or dedicated extraction equipment may be more suitable for some repairs. NASA’s repair guidance includes solder-extraction equipment among component-repair tools.

At the same time, the use of insulating rubber materials improves the safety of the soldering iron.
- Apply flux to the braid as directed by its instructions.
- Place the braid over the solder you want to remove.
- Heat through the braid with the iron so the solder melts and is drawn into it.
- Lift the braid and iron away carefully, then inspect the joint and board before continuing.
HAKKO warns that misuse of solder wick can tear PCB patterns or damage components. Avoid prolonged or forceful heating, and choose an extraction method appropriate to the board and component.

Safety while soldering
- Ventilation: Soldering smoke can include products from heated flux. HAKKO advises good ventilation; its learning material says inhaling large quantities of rosin-flux smoke over a long period can cause illness. Select ventilation appropriate to the process and workspace; these sources do not establish that a particular consumer extractor guarantees safe exposure.
- Hot iron and fire: Keep the iron in its holder, keep combustible items away from the hot tip, and disconnect power when leaving or stopping. Do not rest a hot iron directly on a workbench.
- Lead-bearing solder and hygiene: OSHA’s workplace guidance notes that lead may be present in filler metal and that process temperature affects metal-vapor pressure and potential metal-fume concentration. Its discussion is occupational guidance, not a measured risk estimate for every hobby session. Avoid eating and drinking at the work area, wash hands after handling lead-bearing solder, and follow relevant product safety information and workplace controls.
- ESD-sensitive and high-reliability work: Follow the applicable electrostatic-discharge controls and workmanship plan. NASA identifies ESD control as important for sensitive hardware, but NASA requirements do not automatically govern DIY work.
When standards or specialized controls apply
For casual electronics repair, use materials and practices appropriate to the device and work. Production, customer-controlled, or high-reliability assemblies may require a specified workmanship standard, materials, inspection, and ESD controls. NASA-STD-8739.3 is written for its defined context, not as a universal DIY rule. NASA’s technical standards portal lists KSC-STD-E-0010 version B, dated 2020-01-27, as inactive; verify the current controlling document and required revision for your actual job rather than relying on an inactive standard.
