(Solved) What Is the Technique When Mosaic Pieces Are Set at Angles to Catch the Light?

The Bing quiz expects Andamento, but the precise term for tilting individual mosaic pieces to control reflections is tessera inclination. Here is the distinction, plus why the other choices are wrong.

Quiz answer: Andamento. That is the answer expected for the July 2, 2024 Bing Supersonic quiz. However, the more technically precise term for deliberately tilting individual mosaic pieces so they reflect light is tessera inclination, also called tessera angle, tessera tilt, or angled tessera placement.

So, if you are matching the multiple-choice answer, choose Andamento. If you are describing the actual light-directing technique in art-history or mosaic terminology, say tessera inclination.

Why the Bing quiz answer is Andamento

The question appeared in the July 2, 2024 Bing Supersonic quiz about mosaic terminology. Its three choices were Opus vermiculatum, Andamento, and Opus sectile. The original question and choices are preserved in this Reddit discussion, and the published answer key selects Andamento, as shown by this quiz-answer page.

That makes Andamento the correct answer for the quiz. The wording is nevertheless somewhat imprecise. Specialist mosaic sources generally use andamento for the visual flow and direction of tesserae, while they use inclination, angle, or tilt for the physical orientation of individual pieces.

What does andamento mean?

A tessera is a small piece of stone, glass, ceramic, or another material used to build a mosaic. The plural is tesserae. A useful definition appears in the Getty Museum’s Roman mosaics glossary.

Andamento describes the directional flow, rhythm, and visual movement created by the placement of tesserae. Instead of arranging every piece in rigid horizontal and vertical rows, a mosaicist may make lines of pieces curve around a cheek, follow the folds of a garment, trace a leaf, or radiate around a halo.

It is somewhat comparable to directional brushwork in painting: the direction of the marks helps describe form and movement. The comparison is not exact, because tesserae remain individual, discrete pieces rather than flowing pigment. Still, the arrangement can guide the viewer’s eye and influence the perceived texture, movement, and illumination of a surface. The Chicago Mosaic School’s explanation of andamento and the British Association for Modern Mosaics glossary both emphasize this idea of visual direction and flow.

Andamento can contribute to the way a mosaic catches or appears to move with light, especially when it is combined with glass, gold, or unevenly set pieces. But it primarily describes how tesserae are arranged in relation to one another, not the specific angle at which each piece is set into the wall.

What is tessera inclination?

Tessera inclination is the deliberate setting of mosaic pieces at different angles instead of pressing every piece flat and perpendicular to the setting bed. The angle may be chosen to direct a reflection toward the viewer, respond to a window or candle, or work with the curve of an apse, vault, dome, or wall.

A scholarly discussion of mosaic construction distinguishes between andamento and tessera inclination: andamento concerns the placement and flow of the units, while inclination concerns the angle or tilt of the individual tesserae. In less formal writing, the same practice may be described as angled tesserae, tessera angle, or tessera tilt. See the thesis Mosaic Experimental System for the technical distinction.

These two design decisions can occur together. A mosaicist may arrange pieces in curved lines that follow the contour of a face—that is andamento—while also inclining those pieces to control reflected light. They are related aspects of construction, but they are not identical terms.

How angling tesserae creates a shimmering effect

The light-catching principle is straightforward:

  1. A flat tessera reflects incoming light in a relatively predictable direction.
  2. Changing the tessera’s angle changes the direction in which its surface reflection travels.
  3. A group of tesserae set at slightly different angles produces many small highlights rather than one uniform reflection.
  4. As the viewer moves, or as the light source changes, different pieces become bright while others recede.

The result can be a surface that sparkles, shimmers, or appears to glow. This effect is not produced by angle alone. The material of the tessera, the direction and intensity of the light, the curvature of the architecture, and the viewer’s position all matter.

For example, an angle that sends light toward someone standing below a vault may send it away from a viewer looking straight at the same surface. A wall mosaic designed for candlelight will also behave differently from one viewed in strong daylight.

Byzantine gold mosaics and light control

The technique is especially important in Byzantine monumental mosaics, where glass and gold tesserae were used on church walls, apses, arches, domes, and vaults. These surfaces were commonly viewed from below and from a distance, so mosaicists could coordinate tessera orientation with the architecture and the expected viewing position.

Byzantine gold tesserae were generally not solid-gold tiles. They were made from glass with a thin layer of gold leaf—or sometimes silver—protected by a thin glass coating. The resulting material combined a reflective metallic surface with the durability and color of glass. A historical description of Byzantine gold mosaic construction is available in the American Journal of Archaeology discussion of Byzantine gold mosaic. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection material also illustrates the use of glass and precious-metal foil in mosaic work.

The metallic layer provides the gold or silver reflection; the inclination directs that reflection. Gold tesserae laid completely flat will not produce exactly the same changing pattern of highlights as individually angled tesserae. Colored glass and smalti can also vary in brightness and depth because of their color, translucency, surface texture, and orientation. Stone and marble usually create softer, more diffuse reflections, although their surface and angle still affect the appearance.

One historical account describes Byzantine gold tesserae as inclined outward and downward so that they could catch light and reflect it toward spectators below. A scholarly discussion reports an approximate variation of about 15 to 30 degrees from the vertical for metallic tesserae in a particular Byzantine context. That figure should not be treated as a universal specification: the appropriate angle depends on the material, substrate, architecture, lighting, and intended viewpoint.

Example: Hagia Sophia

The Deësis mosaic in Hagia Sophia provides a useful example of how orientation could distinguish one passage of a mosaic from another. Tesserae in the cross within Christ’s halo were angled differently from the surrounding gold ground, allowing the cross to reflect light in a visibly distinct way. Smarthistory’s discussion of the Hagia Sophia Deësis explains this use of differing tessera angles.

Why Opus vermiculatum and Opus sectile are not the answer

Term What it means Why it is not the best answer here
Andamento The visual flow, direction, and rhythm created by the arrangement of tesserae. It is the intended Bing quiz answer, although tessera inclination is more precise for the physical act of tilting pieces to control reflections.
Opus vermiculatum A highly detailed mosaic technique using very small tesserae arranged in winding or worm-like lines. It describes fine detail, contours, and shading through tiny pieces and curved rows—not the inclination of tesserae for catching light.
Opus sectile A technique in which larger shaped pieces of stone, glass, or another material are fitted together to form a design. It is closer to shaped inlay or marquetry than to a field of small tesserae set at reflective angles.

The Getty’s glossary of Roman mosaic terminology provides the relevant definitions of tesserae, opus vermiculatum, and opus sectile.

Which term should you use?

  • Use Andamento when answering the exact Bing multiple-choice question or when you need to match its published answer key.
  • Use tessera inclination when explaining the physical practice of setting individual pieces at different angles to direct or disperse light.
  • Use tessera angle, tessera tilt, or angled tesserae when writing in plain language or when a source does not use the more technical word inclination.

It would be too strong to say that andamento is meaningless or always wrong in this context. The term can be used broadly for intentional tessera placement, and placement choices can affect light. The more accurate distinction is that andamento is broader, while tessera inclination identifies the specific angular setting of the pieces.

Practical note: direct and reverse mosaic methods

Construction method affects how much control a mosaicist has over the final surface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the direct method, tesserae are placed face-up directly into the final setting bed or substrate. The artist can see the developing surface and preserve individual differences in height and angle. This makes direct placement suitable when intentional light play and surface variation are important. The British Association for Modern Mosaics’ materials and techniques guide describes the direct method.

In the reverse method, tesserae are temporarily attached face-down to a surface, then transferred into the final setting bed. This can be useful for producing a controlled, level surface or for assembling a mosaic away from its final location, but the transfer generally tends to flatten the finished work and makes deliberate individual inclination more difficult.

That does not mean a reverse or indirect method can never produce visual variation. It means that preserving a carefully chosen angle for every tessera is easier with a direct or direct-transfer approach. A practicing mosaicist’s discussion of angle-preserving construction in a mosaic of Christ Pantocrator explains this practical difference.

For a flat floor or an inlaid surface that must be smooth and safe to walk across, level construction may be more important than reflective movement. For a wall, vault, or icon intended to respond to changing light, surface variation and inclination may be desirable. The choice depends on the work’s material, location, lighting, and viewing distance.

Common mistakes about this quiz question

  • Repeating the answer without explaining it: Andamento matches the quiz key, but the reader may incorrectly conclude that it literally means tilting tesserae.
  • Choosing opus vermiculatum: The winding, worm-like arrangement can look directional, but the term refers primarily to tiny tesserae used for detailed imagery.
  • Choosing opus sectile: The defining feature is the use of larger shaped pieces fitted into a design, not reflective angular placement.
  • Calling the practice iridescent mosaic: Iridescence describes an optical appearance or material behavior; it is not the specific name for setting pieces at an angle.
  • Assuming gold alone creates the effect: Gold leaf provides a reflective surface, but inclination determines where much of that reflection is seen.
  • Treating 15–30 degrees as a universal rule: That is an approximate range reported for a particular historical context, not a requirement for every mosaic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the answer Andamento or tessera inclination?

For the July 2, 2024 Bing quiz, the answer is Andamento. For the specific physical practice of tilting individual pieces to direct reflections, tessera inclination is the more precise technical description.

What are the individual pieces in a mosaic called?

They are called tesserae; one piece is a tessera. They may be made from glass, stone, marble, terracotta, or other materials.

Why do Byzantine gold mosaics shimmer?

They combine reflective glass tesserae—often glass containing a thin layer of gold leaf—with deliberate differences in tessera angle. As the viewer or light source moves, different pieces reflect light toward the eye.

Are gold mosaic tesserae made from solid gold?

Usually not. Byzantine gold tesserae were generally glass pieces incorporating a thin sheet of gold leaf protected by a glass coating. The gold provides the metallic reflection, while the glass forms the body and protective surface.

What is opus vermiculatum?

Opus vermiculatum is a detailed mosaic technique that uses very small tesserae arranged in winding, worm-like lines to create fine contours, shading, and pictorial detail.

What is opus sectile?

Opus sectile uses larger, shaped pieces of stone or glass fitted together to form a design. It is more like shaped inlay than a conventional field of small tesserae.

Does every mosaic use angled tesserae?

No. Many mosaics use relatively flat tesserae, and floors often require a level surface. Individual inclination is a deliberate choice that is especially useful when the artist wants to control reflections or respond to a particular architectural setting.

The Bottom Line

Final answer: Choose Andamento for the Bing quiz. In precise mosaic terminology, however, the act of setting tesserae at different angles to catch and direct light is better described as tessera inclination, or tessera tilt. Andamento refers more broadly to the flow and directional arrangement of the tesserae.
