The RedBall Project was first displayed in St. Louis, Missouri, in 2001, as an artist commission connected with Arts in Transit.
How the St. Louis project began
Kurt Perschke created the first RedBall installation in 2001 after St. Louis asked him to make an artwork for a site at the foot of a bridge. The opportunity came through Arts in Transit, and the unusual setting shaped the work. Perschke recalled repeatedly returning to “this ugly area, underneath an overpass with a bit of gravel on the ground.”

In a 2019 interview with Tokyo Midtown’s Roppongi Mirai Kaigi, Perschke described it this way: “My first red ball creation was back in 2001 in St.Louis when the city asked me to create an art piece to display at the foot of a bridge.”
Why Barcelona is sometimes described as the first
Barcelona was not the first RedBall appearance. It was a later milestone: Perschke’s official FAQ identifies Barcelona as the first time the project moved through a city in the way he had imagined. That describes a change in format, not a different origin.

What the RedBall Project is
RedBall is a temporary public-art performance built around one large inflatable red sphere. The ball is placed in changing architectural sites, so each installation depends on the contrast between the bright form and its surroundings and on how people encounter it in public space.
The Nasher Sculpture Center describes the sphere as 15 feet (approximately 4.5 metres) in diameter. The artist’s current biography says the project has appeared in more than 50 cities; that is a rounded figure reported by the project rather than an independently audited total.

What is not documented about the first display
- The available accounts do not identify the exact bridge in St. Louis.
- They establish the year 2001 but not a precise day or month.
- “Under a bridge” describes the setting; it should not be treated as the project’s complete location without naming St. Louis.
How the project continued
RedBall remains a temporary, location-specific work rather than a permanent sculpture. For example, RedBall Dallas was presented from June 19 through June 28, 2026, across the Dallas Arts District and nearby downtown locations, with ten consecutive days of installations.
