Musical notes do not have one fixed visual shape. What you can see is the pattern produced when a particular vibrating object or liquid is driven at a particular frequency, in a particular setup, and then photographed. Jeff Louviere and Vanessa Brown’s Resonantia turns that conditional phenomenon into an art series: images associated with all 12 musical notes, accompanied by a vinyl album.
What Resonantia makes visible
Resonantia is an art project by Jeff Louviere and Vanessa Brown. The artists’ biography describes a vinyl album and imagery for all 12 musical notes, created with a generator and spectrometer to visualize the images.
Jennifer Ouellette’s July 23, 2016, report for Gizmodo describes the working session in more concrete terms. Louviere reportedly used a laptop frequency generator, a guitar tuner, an amplifier and a plastic plate, while Brown photographed liquid patterns formed on the plate. The article gives 220 hertz as an example frequency for A and says the pair made portraits for all 12 notes.

The artists described the project this way, as quoted by Ouellette: “We are translating a time-based medium of sound and contrasting it with the space-based form of photography.” Their more poetic formulation was: “Everything you see is a sound. Everything you hear is a photography.” The second sentence is an artistic metaphor, not a claim that photographs literally contain audible sound.
Why vibration can become a picture
Natural frequencies and standing waves
Objects have natural frequencies at which they vibrate readily. When a plate is driven at one of those frequencies, waves travel across it and interfere with one another. The result can be a standing-wave pattern: some regions move strongly while others remain comparatively still.
Nodal lines and moving particles
In a standard Chladni-plate demonstration, salt or sand is scattered on a vibrating plate. The grains are displaced from strongly moving regions and collect along the relatively still boundaries called nodes. The grains therefore outline the vibrational mode of that plate under those conditions.

A photograph of such a pattern records the response of a specific medium, object, shape, frequency and excitation method. It is not an unmediated picture of a musical note. Change the plate, the liquid depth, the way the energy enters the system, the frequency or the camera exposure, and the visible result can change.
Resonantia and a Chladni plate are related, not identical
| Demonstration | Medium and setup | What the image represents |
|---|---|---|
| Resonantia (reported process) | Liquid on a plastic plate, driven at selected frequencies and photographed; the Gizmodo account also reports a frequency generator, tuner and amplifier. | Artistically composed images associated with the 12 notes in the series. |
| Chladni-plate demonstration | Salt or sand on a vibrating plate; particles settle at nodal positions. | The standing-wave mode of that particular plate and excitation. |
The Chladni experiment is a useful way to understand why vibration can leave visible lines, but it is not established as the artists’ exact equipment or procedure. The artists’ reported liquid-and-photography method should remain distinct from the classroom demonstration.
Does every A, C or other note look the same?
No. A frequency label identifies a rate of vibration, not a universal image. The same note can produce different patterns in different physical systems, and one system can produce multiple modes depending on how it is driven. Even when two images share a frequency, differences in geometry, material, boundary conditions, liquid behavior and image capture can alter the result.

That is why a recognizable face, tree or other figure in a pattern belongs to the artists’ interpretation. The resemblance may guide how a viewer reads the photograph, but it is not a physical property that the note possesses everywhere.

Ouellette’s 2016 Gizmodo account says Louviere used Photo Sounder to scan the images and convert them into sound files. That is a historical report about the project; it does not establish that the software remains available today. The conversion also reverses the project’s central gesture: a time-based phenomenon is rendered as a spatial image, then analyzed to recover audio.

A simple way to see the principle yourself
A Chladni-plate setup can provide a hands-on illustration of nodal patterns. The Physics Classroom describes using a plate, a small amount of salt and a bow to excite the surface. Treat this as an educational analogue, not a reconstruction of Resonantia.

- Secure a suitable metal plate so it can vibrate freely.
- Scatter a thin, even layer of salt or fine sand across its surface.
- Drive the plate at a chosen frequency, changing the excitation point or frequency carefully.
- Watch the particles move away from active regions and gather along nodal lines.
- Photograph each stable mode and record the setup, because the pattern belongs to that specific arrangement.
Use eye protection, keep fingers and loose clothing away from moving parts, and follow the instructions for the equipment you use. A classroom demonstration can reveal the physics without claiming to reproduce the artists’ liquid images.
What the project ultimately shows
Resonantia makes sound feel tangible by giving selected frequencies a visual counterpart. Its images are neither arbitrary illustrations nor the single true appearance of musical notes. They are records—and interpretations—of how matter responds when sound energy is applied under particular conditions.
