South African Heritage Day is a public holiday observed every year on 24 September. It celebrates the country’s diverse heritage—not just its food or one familiar custom, but also its languages, stories, creative expression, knowledge and living community practices.

What is South African Heritage Day?

Heritage Day is a national public holiday that recognises the many forms of South African cultural heritage. The South African Government describes living heritage—also called intangible cultural heritage—as including traditions, oral history, performance, ritual, popular memory, skills and techniques, Indigenous knowledge systems, and people’s relationships with nature and society. The government’s Heritage Day overview explains the scope.

Heritage can be tangible, such as objects and places, or carried through what people know and do. Languages, food, land, historical inheritance and creative expression are all part of the picture. As the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology put it in a 1996 statement quoted on the South African Government’s public holidays page, heritage includes things that are both tangible and “difficult to pin down.”

South African History Online’s educational resource says that 24 September had previously been known as Shaka Day in KwaZulu-Natal. It describes the establishment of Heritage Day as a political compromise that created a day for all South Africans to celebrate their diverse cultural heritage. That is the historical account presented by South African History Online.

What does heritage mean in everyday life?

Heritage is not only something kept in a museum or remembered in a history book. It also lives in people, homes and communities: in the languages spoken, songs sung, skills taught, stories retold, ceremonies practised and knowledge passed between generations. In his 2026 Heritage Day address, President Cyril Ramaphosa highlighted languages, songs, food, clothing, stories, customs, elders’ knowledge and the work of passing knowledge to younger people. A painting can interpret or preserve a personal perspective; it does not stand in for the full range of a culture or speak for everyone within it.

Is Heritage Day just National Braai Day?

No. A braai is one familiar way some people mark the holiday, not its definition or an expectation for every South African. South African History Online describes National Braai Day as a later addition to Heritage Day observances: the campaign was announced in 2007, with Archbishop Desmond Tutu as patron of Braai4Heritage. The resource presents the braai as a shared pastime across cultures. Its educational resource gives that context; the government’s wider definition of living heritage shows why the day reaches well beyond a meal.

Ways to celebrate or explore heritage through art

  • Make a painting from a personal memory. Choose a place, object, meal or gathering connected to your own experience, and note whose story the image represents.
  • Ask before depicting someone else’s practice. If a subject involves a person, community, ceremony or knowledge that is not yours to share, seek permission and listen to how participants want it represented.
  • Learn through conversation. Invite a relative, neighbour or community member to share a story or skill, if they are comfortable doing so. Give credit and avoid presenting one person’s account as universal.
  • Attend a local cultural event or visit a heritage institution. Check the organiser’s current programme, accessibility information and any rules about photography or drawing before you go.
  • Share a meal or gathering if that is meaningful to you. A braai is one option, not a requirement; the point is the people and traditions involved, not a particular menu.
