There is no single historically correct Dulux colour for an Art Deco apartment building. A defensible refurbishment specification starts with the building’s own evidence—paint scrapes, early photographs, archival descriptions and heritage controls—then uses Dulux colour tools to select and document a compatible scheme. Where the original colours cannot be established, choose a period-informed palette and explain that it is an interpretation, not a verified reinstatement.
The sequence matters: establish significance and approvals, investigate earlier finishes, decide where each colour belongs, confirm that the coating suits every substrate, test samples on the actual building, and only then nominate the Dulux product and finish.

Choose the evidence standard before choosing a colour
Refurbishment teams usually follow one of two legitimate routes. The first is evidence-led reinstatement: reconstructing an earlier scheme when reliable physical or documentary evidence survives. The second is a period-informed interpretation: creating a coherent Art Deco scheme when the original colours are unknown, not being reinstated, or cannot be recovered without damaging the building.
| Route | What supports it | What the specification should say |
|---|---|---|
| Evidence-led reinstatement | Paint scrapes, early photographs, archival records or clearly documented later schemes | Identify the evidence, its date and location; state which elements are reconstructed and which remain uncertain |
| Period-informed interpretation | Building era, architectural details, historic photographs of comparable streetscapes and local heritage guidance | Describe the palette as an interpretation suited to the building, not proof of its original colours |
Wagga Wagga City Council’s Heritage Adviser’s Guide describes research and paint scrapes as ways to reconstruct earlier schemes, while reference books and photographs can help infer how colours were placed. It treats manufacturer charts as guidance rather than historical evidence. The same guide warns that a correct colour used in the wrong location, too many colours, or highlighting a feature that was never historically emphasised can create a false impression of history.

- TRUSTED BY PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS AND CONTRACTORS NATIONWIDE — Pro Grade delivers professional-grade results at a price that makes sense for crews who go through brushes on every job. Ideal for property managers, remodeling contractors, apartment turnover crews, maintenance teams, and commercial painting operations. Backed by thousands of verified reviews from working painters. Washable and reusable for multiple projects.
Do not let a colour-card match outrun the evidence. A Dulux shade can be an excellent contemporary match for a documented colour, but the card itself cannot prove that the shade was used on this apartment building.
What colours are credible for Australian Art Deco?
Camden Council’s 2023 Material and Colour Guide presents Interwar Art Deco as a style popular in Australia during the 1930s and 1940s. Its example main colours include off-white, pale blue, cream and pastel green. Detail examples include royal blue, canary yellow, signal red and pink beige. These are council examples for understanding the period, not a verified palette for an unidentified building.
A pale scheme is not the only defensible interpretation. Wagga Wagga City Council’s Heritage Adviser’s Guide states: “Some periods, notably Art Deco in the 1930s, used a range of bright colours.” Bright accents can therefore be appropriate when the building’s details, streetscape and evidence support them. The decision is not pastel versus bright in isolation; it is whether the value, saturation and placement work together and respect the building’s significance.
Use the palette as a hierarchy rather than a collection of unrelated swatches:
- Main body: a light or mid-tone that clarifies the building’s mass and does not obscure mouldings or geometric relief.
- Trim: a related light, dark or contrasting colour for bands, reveals, parapets and window surrounds where those elements are intended to read as a group.
- Details: stronger colour reserved for doors, selected metalwork, signage zones or other features supported by evidence.
Clarence Valley Council’s 2020 guidance describes a traditional period scheme as generally using three to four colours. Treat that figure as a useful conservation guideline, not a rule that overrides building-specific evidence. A small apartment façade may need fewer colours to keep its geometry legible; a larger complex may require carefully related variations.

Investigate the building before ordering samples
Investigation should be recorded so that the final colour decision can be audited by the owner, designer, painter and approval authority.
- Confirm the building’s status and date. Establish the construction period, additions, conservation-area listing, heritage register entry and any conservation management plan. Note whether the work concerns a principal façade, a courtyard, interiors or shared metalwork.
- Collect early images and documents. Look for dated photographs, plans, sales material, newspaper images and previous maintenance records. Record what is visible and what cannot be resolved because of image quality or later repainting.
- Map the surfaces. Mark face brick, natural stone, rendered masonry, plaster, timber, steel and aluminium separately. A colour decision for a rendered cornice cannot be transferred automatically to a brick pier or a powder-coated balustrade.
- Use paint scrapes selectively. A conservation professional can expose successive layers at sheltered and representative locations. Photograph each layer, record its position and avoid treating a single patch as proof for the whole elevation.
- Compare the evidence. Check whether a colour appears repeatedly, whether it belongs to the same construction phase and whether it was a body, trim or detail colour. Distinguish an original scheme from a later but historically significant repaint.
- Set the decision route. If the evidence is consistent, specify reinstatement with its limitations. If it is inconclusive, document a period-informed interpretation and the reasons for the chosen placement.
Wagga Wagga’s guidance recommends testing colours on actual areas and viewing them from a distance, then recording the era, colour names and manufacturer in the specification. That record is as important as the final swatch because future maintenance teams need to know what was selected and where.
Protect face brick, stone and breathable materials
Colour selection cannot be separated from material conservation. Camden Council advises against painting unpainted surfaces such as face brick and most masonry, and cautions against non-traditional paint types that may damage materials that need to breathe. Clarence Valley Council likewise says historic face brick and natural stone should not be painted.
First determine whether a surface was historically painted and whether the existing coating is sound and compatible. Check moisture movement, salts, cracking, previous elastomeric or impermeable layers, exposure to weather and the condition of joints. The sources do not identify a Dulux paint system for this particular building; product and primer decisions therefore require substrate-specific technical advice and, where appropriate, conservation advice.

Use Dulux tools to narrow and document the palette
Dulux’s heritage-colour advice emphasises preserving original architectural details and selecting colours that complement a home’s era. Its Specifier materials describe the Traditional collection as intended to enhance traditional character and assist projects subject to heritage regulations. The Dulux Australia Colour Atlas contains more than 4,800 colours, and the Specifier service points professionals to colour tools, A4 swatches, Fandecks, BIM content and DuSpec+ technical information.
These resources help you move from a historical description such as “pale blue body with a darker geometric band” to a nominated colour, finish and product. They do not replace the building investigation or approval process. Keep the colour name and code, the edition or date of the tool used, and the surface for which the selection was made.
Dulux’s general colour guidance identifies sample pots and swatches as selection aids and warns that displayed colours are guides that should be tested at home. On a heritage project, “at home” means on the actual wall, trim or metal component, not only on a white card in an office.
Test samples in the building’s real light
- Shortlist by role. Select separate candidates for body, trim and details. Keep the number of candidates small enough to compare without losing track of them.
- Order physical samples. Use Dulux sample pots, A4 swatches or Fandecks as appropriate. Record the colour name and code when each sample arrives.
- Prepare representative areas. Test on the existing substrate after the proposed preparation, or on a sound sample board coated with the same primer and undercoat. Include a shadowed area and a sun-exposed elevation when the building has both.
- Apply enough area to judge scale. A tiny brush-out exaggerates contrast and hides texture. Paint a section large enough to read from the street and from the opposite side of the room or courtyard.
- View at different times. Check morning, midday and late-afternoon light, wet and dry appearance where relevant, and the effect of neighbouring buildings and landscape. Record observations rather than relying on memory.
- Review from public viewpoints. A detail that looks restrained close up may dominate the façade at footpath distance. Confirm that the hierarchy of body, trim and accents still reads as intended.
- Approve one controlled sample. Mark the approved area, photograph it with a colour record and remove or overcoat unapproved tests before full production.
Where the building is occupied, coordinate tests with residents and protect windows, paths and shared spaces. A sample is a decision tool, not permission to proceed with the whole elevation.
Write a specification that prevents colour drift
A good schedule connects historical reasoning to a product decision without pretending that a colour name alone is enough.

| Schedule field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Building element | Façade body, parapet band, entry door, window surround, balustrade or other named component | Prevents a colour selected for one feature being applied everywhere |
| Evidence basis | Paint-scrape location, photograph date, archival source or period-informed rationale | Shows whether the choice is reinstatement or interpretation |
| Dulux colour | Exact colour name and code, with the date or edition of the colour tool | Allows later maintenance to reproduce the approved selection |
| Substrate and preparation | Brick, stone, render, plaster, timber, steel or aluminium; cleaning, repairs and primer requirements | Links the colour to a technically suitable system |
| Finish and sheen | Approved finish for the element, including any low-sheen or gloss requirement | Sheen changes how Art Deco relief and colour contrast are perceived |
| Approval status | Heritage advice, exemption or consent reference, plus approved sample location | Creates a clear boundary between testing and authorised work |
Include a drawing or elevation keyed to the schedule. “Dulux off-white” is not a complete instruction: the document should identify which off-white, on which surface, with what preparation and finish.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check approvals for the actual jurisdiction
Permission requirements depend on the site, listing and scope. The City of Sydney’s heritage repainting guidance says exterior repainting will not generally require permission, but identifies exceptions and directs owners to determine whether advice, a written exemption or development consent is needed. That guidance applies to the City of Sydney only.
Camden Council states that painting heritage items and buildings in Camden conservation areas requires consent or a written exemption. Other councils may use different categories, forms and thresholds. Before finalising an exterior palette, confirm the responsible authority, heritage-listing status, conservation-area controls, any conservation management plan and whether the work changes an unpainted surface, decorative detail or visible metalwork.
Keep the approval record with the colour schedule. If the authority approves a sample or placement condition, carry that condition into the painter’s work order rather than leaving it in correspondence that the site team may not see.
Treat architectural metalwork as a separate specification
Balustrades, window frames, awnings and other aluminium or steel components may need a different finish from masonry. Dulux describes an architectural powder-coating range with sample swatches, specialist specification support and a route to Dulux Accredited Powder Coaters. This is a conditional option for suitable metal components, not a substitute for a masonry or plaster paint system.

Compare candidate schemes on more than colour
When two or three schemes remain, score them against the same criteria instead of choosing the most attractive swatch in isolation.
| Criterion | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Documentary support | Does the scheme reproduce a repeatedly documented layer, or is it clearly labelled as an interpretation? |
| Art Deco and streetscape fit | Does the value and saturation suit the building’s geometry and neighbouring heritage context? |
| Placement | Are body, trim and detail colours assigned to elements that historically or architecturally read that way? |
| Material compatibility | Can the proposed coating be used safely on the actual substrate, or should an unpainted material remain exposed? |
| Approval certainty | Does the scheme meet the relevant council pathway, including any exemption or consent conditions? |
| Real-light appearance | Does the tested sample work from public viewpoints and under the building’s changing light? |
No named Dulux scheme is established as the winner across all six criteria. The strongest choice is the one that performs acceptably on every criterion and has a written rationale that future owners can understand.
Common failure modes and their fixes
- Copying a generic pastel palette: Use the Camden examples as period direction only; investigate the building and its streetscape first.
- Assuming every Art Deco building was muted: Consider bright accents where evidence and architectural placement support them; Wagga Wagga’s guide specifically recognises bright 1930s colours.
- Painting historic brick or stone for uniformity: Confirm the original finish and conservation advice; unpainted face brick and natural stone may need to remain exposed.
- Choosing by digital display: Test physical samples on representative surfaces because screens and cards cannot reproduce the building’s texture and light.
- Using one coating specification everywhere: Separate masonry, timber, steel and aluminium requirements and obtain technical confirmation for each.
- Adding too many accent colours: Start with a restrained three- or four-colour period framework, then add a colour only when the evidence or architectural hierarchy justifies it.
- Treating a sample as approval: Keep work within the authorised scope and obtain the required council advice, exemption or consent before full repainting.
- Failing to record the decision: Attach colour codes, finishes, locations, photographs, evidence and approval references to the final specification.
Final pre-order checklist
- The building’s date, listing and local controls are confirmed.
- Original or later schemes have been investigated with photographs, documents and, where appropriate, paint scrapes.
- The project states whether it is reinstatement or period-informed interpretation.
- Unpainted face brick, natural stone and other significant materials have been assessed before any coating is proposed.
- Body, trim and detail colours are mapped to specific elements.
- Physical samples have been viewed on the real surfaces from public and resident viewpoints in changing light.
- The Dulux colour name, code, tool date, finish and intended surface are recorded.
- Product, primer and preparation requirements are confirmed for each substrate.
- Metalwork has a separate paint or powder-coating decision where required.
- Approval or exemption documentation is attached to the work package.
For an Art Deco apartment refurbishment, the defensible Dulux specification is not a fashionable colour list. It is a documented chain from building evidence and local controls to colour placement, substrate-compatible products, tested samples and an approval record. That process allows a pale, bright or mixed palette to be credible without claiming a historical certainty the building cannot prove.
