Spring Festival couplets, or chunlian (春聯/春联), are a pair of New Year inscriptions traditionally displayed on either side of a doorway. Their two lines make matching wishes for the year ahead; an optional horizontal inscription, called a hengpi (橫批/横批), may sit above them. Usually written or printed on red paper, they are both seasonal decorations and a compact form of parallel writing.

What are Spring Festival couplets?

A couplet is made of two related lines. In the Spring Festival version, the upper line (shanglian, 上聯/上联) and lower line (xialian, 下聯/下联) are displayed vertically on opposite sides of an entrance. A third, horizontal inscription may be placed above the doorway. The Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology describes the lines as poems hung in pairs, commonly on red paper; its teaching material also documents examples displayed by businesses and collected in Beijing. The two vertical lines generally have the same number of Chinese characters and should correspond in meaning. Stronger examples also balance their grammatical structure and tones. Beijing’s municipal tourism portal cautions that the lines should not merely repeat the same idea; the horizontal hengpi can sum up or reinforce the pair. Four-, five-, and seven-character lines are common, though longer ones exist, according to the Hearst Museum. The wishes often concern good fortune, wealth, or long life. The exact message depends on the wording chosen, so a set is best understood as a particular New Year greeting rather than as one fixed formula. Hearst Museum teaching kit

How to recognize and hang a set

Check what is included

A full set may contain two vertical strips and a horizontal hengpi; some sets provide only the pair. Before displaying one, confirm whether the horizontal piece is included and whether its wording belongs with the two lines. The conventional placement is the vertical pair on either side of an entryway, with the horizontal inscription above it. Spring couplets are also used on gates, doors, and business entrances.

Match the lines to the place

  • Check that the two vertical inscriptions have equal character counts.
  • Read their meanings together: they should complement each other rather than duplicate the same wish.
  • Choose wording and line length suited to the doorway and the people or business receiving the greeting.
  • If buying a set, check whether it is printed or handwritten and whether the horizontal inscription is included.

The sources establish red paper and scroll-like forms as common, but do not establish current product specifications, prices, adhesives, weather resistance, or durability. Choose a hanging method and material appropriate to the actual door or surface; do not assume every paper set is suitable for outdoor exposure.

What the inscriptions mean

Spring couplets express auspicious wishes for the New Year. A line may invoke good fortune, prosperity, or longevity, while its partner adds a related wish or image. The horizontal inscription can provide a concise theme for both vertical lines. Because meanings depend on the characters used, readers who do not know Chinese should check a reliable translation of the particular set rather than infer its message from the red paper or format alone.

From peach-wood charms to red paper

Taiwan’s National Archives Administration traces the custom to peach-wood door charms. Its historical account says the charms bore images or names of Shen Tu and Yu Lei and describes auspicious or protective phrases written on them as an early form of couplets. The account also cites the “Meng Shu peach charm poem” from the Five Dynasties, beginning “新年納餘慶,嘉節號長春” (“The New Year brings accumulated celebrations; the fine season is called Long Spring”). These are traditional historical accounts of protective practice, not evidence that the charms had supernatural effects. Taiwan National Archives Administration: “桃符與春聯”

The same administration says couplets were written on peach boards before paper took their place, with red paper becoming popular in the Ming dynasty. This history helps explain why a modern red-paper pair is associated with an older door-decoration tradition without treating the customs as identical in material or form. Beijing’s tourism portal also connects couplets with peach-wood door charms. Taiwan National Archives Administration: “桃符與春聯” · Beijing Municipal Government: “Spring Festival Couplet & Poems”

A related court tradition

A Qing dynasty scroll in the National Palace Museum’s collection records spring-post poems associated with the Qianlong emperor and the year 1756. The museum explains that emperors and court officials continued an older practice of composing New Year spring-post poems. This is related historical context, not the beginning date of today’s household couplet custom. National Palace Museum: “Calligraphy and Painting for the New Year”

Printed or handwritten: choosing a set

Choice What it offers What to check
Printed set A ready-made option with consistent lettering. Confirm the two lines match in character count, suit the intended recipient, and include a horizontal inscription if you want one.
Handwritten set A personal calligraphic treatment; the lines can be written for a particular doorway or recipient. Allow for the materials and writing involved. A brush, ink, and red paper are relevant supplies, but no specific brand or product listing is established here.

For either choice, the central decision is the wording and whether you need the complete three-part arrangement. The Hearst Museum documents common red-paper couplets and physical examples; the National Palace Museum’s court scroll offers a separate example of New Year spring-post poetry in a calligraphic setting. Heritage recognition

Travel China reports that the couplet tradition was included in the first batch of China’s National Intangible Cultural Heritage List, approved by the State Council on May 20, 2006. That date is a heritage-list milestone, not the origin date of the custom. Travel China: “Spring Festival Couplets: Decoding the cultural symbols for Spring Festival”
