St James Chapel’s Timber Acoustic Vision: What the Project Record Shows About Walls and Ceilings

The likely St James Chapel in Castle Hill pairs reclaimed heritage elements with angled wall treatments and flexible acoustic partitions. Project records do not yet verify a bespoke timber-panel system, ceiling installation or measured acoustic performance, so this guide separates documented design facts from assumptions.

The strongest documented match for the headline is Anglicare’s St James Chapel and Dover Hall in Castle Hill, New South Wales, designed by Jackson Teece. Available project records describe angled wall panelling, light boxes, heritage elements and acoustic sky-fold partitions, but they do not conclusively identify a bespoke acoustic timber-panel system at that chapel or document ceiling panels. The distinction matters: the building’s architectural intent is clear, while the panel material, supplier and measured acoustic performance remain unverified.

What can be established about St James Chapel

Project information from Archify identifies a 940-square-metre chapel and hall within Anglicare’s Castle Hill residential aged-care precinct. The building occupies the site of an earlier chapel constructed in 1965, so the design had to carry institutional memory into a new, flexible gathering space.

The project retains fourteen reclaimed stained-glass windows, the original timber cross and the chapel bell. Those elements are not decorative afterthoughts: they establish a visual and spiritual continuity that a new interior lining has to respect. The design also introduces narrow coloured-glass openings behind the cross and a 32-metre spire topped by a steel cross.

Capacity is described as up to 400 people. Two automated acoustic sky-fold walls allow the chapel and Dover Hall to operate as connected or separate rooms. This arrangement is central to understanding the acoustic challenge. A wall system must support a reverent, intelligible chapel setting while the building is divided, opened for larger gatherings or used for different patterns of speech, music and movement.

Archify’s description refers to soft angled wall panelling and light boxes. A separate project listing associates Decor Systems with those wall-panelling and light-box features. Neither source identifies them as the “bespoke acoustic timber panels” in the headline, and neither documents a ceiling-panel assembly, timber species, acoustic backing, test result or measured reverberation time for St James Chapel.

Why timber acoustic lining is significant in a worship space

Worship interiors have to make spoken words understandable without stripping away the reverberant quality that supports singing, organ music or choral performance. These aims can conflict. A highly reflective room may sound spacious but allow speech to blur; an over-absorbed room may make announcements clear while leaving music dry and disconnected.

Timber lining can contribute to this balance when it is designed as a complete assembly rather than treated as a finish alone. Slats, battens or perforated panels create a visual rhythm, while an absorptive layer behind the timber can reduce reflected energy. Gaps, cavity depth, backing density, panel orientation and the amount of exposed hard surface all influence the result. A timber face with no suitable backing should not automatically be called an acoustic treatment.

Placement is as important as material. Wall absorption near speaking positions can control early reflections, while ceiling treatment can moderate the vertical reflections that build up in a large volume. Diffusive or irregular surfaces can scatter sound instead of simply absorbing it. In a chapel, the design team may reserve reflective areas to sustain music while treating selected walls, ceilings or rear zones to protect speech clarity.

Those are design principles, not performance claims about St James Chapel. The available project pages do not report sound-absorption coefficients, speech-transmission measures, reverberation times or post-occupancy testing. It is therefore accurate to discuss acoustic intent and configuration, but not to claim that the timber panelling achieved a particular result.

What the headline establishes—and what it does not

Question What the project record supports Status
Which chapel is the likely subject? Anglicare’s St James Chapel and Dover Hall in Castle Hill, New South Wales, designed by Jackson Teece. Strongest available match, not conclusive identification of the headline project.
How large is the project? Archify describes a 940-square-metre chapel-and-hall project. Documented project descriptor.
How many people can it accommodate? The chapel is described as serving up to 400 people. Documented capacity description, not an acoustic test.
What flexible element is documented? Two automated acoustic sky-fold walls can connect or separate the chapel and hall. Documented building feature; no performance figures supplied.
Are angled wall panels and light boxes present? Archify describes soft angled wall panelling and light boxes; a secondary listing names Decor Systems in connection with those features. Feature and supplier attribution are documented, but not as proof of the headline’s acoustic timber-panel system.
Are bespoke timber ceiling panels documented? No retrieved source supplies a ceiling-panel specification, timber species, profile, spacing or mounting detail for St James Chapel. Not established.
Is acoustic performance documented? No measured reverberation, speech-intelligibility, absorption or isolation result is reported for the panelling. Not established.

How a bespoke timber system should be specified

If an architect or client wants to verify or develop a system of this type, the specification needs more detail than “acoustic timber panels.” The following decisions determine both appearance and performance.

Timber species, profile and dimensions

Species affects colour, grain, hardness, stability and finishing options. The profile may be a solid batten, slat, veneer-faced panel or perforated element. Dimensions should be stated for the visible face and the complete build-up, including any carrier rails or clips. A drawing should distinguish wall and ceiling profiles rather than assuming one component suits every location.

Spacing and open area

Open joints are part of the acoustic design when sound must reach an absorptive backing. Joint width, percentage open area and the depth of the cavity should be scheduled. A visual reference to “slatted timber” is insufficient because two systems with the same timber colour can expose very different amounts of backing.

Backing and cavity construction

The backing may be an acoustic blanket, board or another tested layer. Its thickness, density, facing and support method should be identified, along with the air space behind the timber. If the backing is omitted, compressed, interrupted by services or sealed at the edges, the installed result may differ from the tested assembly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Finish and maintenance

Finish changes colour, sheen and cleanability. A clear oil, lacquer or factory coating should be named, with provisions for touch-up and replacement. In an aged-care setting, the maintenance plan also needs to address dust, cleaning products, impact from mobility equipment and access to high-level ceiling surfaces.

Wall-versus-ceiling installation

Ceilings impose different loads, access requirements and fire-protection constraints from walls. The design should show suspension points, seismic or movement allowances where applicable, service coordination, sprinkler clearances, lighting integration and a safe replacement method. A panel that performs well on a wall cannot be assumed to perform identically overhead.

Acoustic objectives

The brief should define how the room will be used: spoken worship, sermons, congregational singing, amplified music, funerals, community meetings or simultaneous activities in the hall. The consultant can then set target reverberation and speech criteria, model different room configurations and verify the completed space with measurements. Without those targets and results, “acoustic” remains a design intention rather than a demonstrated outcome.

Fire and public-assembly requirements

Timber in a public assembly building requires a documented reaction-to-fire strategy for the visible finish, backing and concealed cavity. The specification should identify the applicable code pathway, treatment or coating, test evidence and how penetrations are sealed. Supplier guidance for worship spaces commonly flags fire performance as a key consideration, but generic guidance cannot substitute for approval of the actual build-up.

A separate chapel example shows how transparent specifications look

Sculptform’s case study for Cranbrook School Chapel, completed in 2022, provides a useful comparison because it publishes component information that is absent from the St James material. The projects must not be conflated: Cranbrook is a different chapel, and its details are not evidence of what was installed at Anglicare’s St James Chapel.

Specification item St James Chapel record Cranbrook School Chapel case study
Project identification Anglicare St James Chapel and Dover Hall, Castle Hill; likely match for the headline but not conclusively tied to it. Cranbrook School Chapel, completed 2022.
Timber species Not stated. Blackbutt.
Ceiling batten size Not stated. 42 × 42 mm.
Wall batten size Not stated. 42 × 19 mm.
Spacing Not stated. 10 mm.
Acoustic backing Not stated. Acoustic backing installed behind the battens.
Finish Not stated. Clear-oil finish.
Measured acoustic result Not reported. The cited case study specifies the assembly but does not provide a St James result.

The value of this comparison is methodological. A credible project description names the timber, profile, spacing, backing and finish, then separates those construction facts from measured room performance. St James Chapel’s public descriptions currently provide the architecture and flexibility, but not that level of lining-system detail.

Flexible rooms require configuration-by-configuration testing

The automated sky-fold walls are more than a movable partition. When closed, they create separate acoustic environments; when open, they allow sound and activity to pass between the chapel and hall. The room volume, exposed surfaces and audience distribution change in each state.

A responsible acoustic design would therefore assess at least the chapel closed, the hall closed and the combined room open. It would also consider whether one space is occupied while the other is used for circulation or support activity. Measurements should be taken after finishes, lighting, seating and other major absorbers are installed, because an empty shell does not represent the occupied room.

No such test series is reported in the available St James project descriptions. The partitions can accurately be called acoustic sky-fold walls as a documented feature; their effectiveness in a particular configuration should not be inferred from that label.

Heritage elements shape the panel design

Retaining the fourteen stained-glass windows, timber cross and bell means that new lining cannot be designed as a blank contemporary envelope. Angled panels and light boxes have to frame existing objects, preserve sightlines and avoid competing with the cross and coloured-glass openings behind it.

Light integration is especially sensitive in a worship space. A panel module may need concealed wiring routes, removable access sections and carefully controlled luminance so that the retained glass remains legible. The 32-metre spire and steel cross establish a strong vertical gesture outside; interior ceiling and wall rhythms should support that orientation without introducing glare or visual clutter.

These observations describe coordination requirements arising from the documented heritage and lighting elements. They do not prove that a particular timber acoustic product solved them at St James Chapel.

A practical verification checklist for the project team

  1. Confirm the project identity. Obtain the architect’s project number, address and dated drawing set so the chapel in the headline can be matched to the Castle Hill building rather than another St James project.
  2. Request the interior elevations and reflected ceiling plan. These drawings should show every panelled surface, module, joint, light box, access panel and interface with retained windows or the cross.
  3. Read the finish schedule. Look for timber species, dimensions, perforation or slat pattern, spacing, coating, colour reference and replacement provisions.
  4. Read the acoustic build-up. Identify backing product, thickness, density, cavity depth, carrier system and any tested assembly. Ask whether the test applies to the installed orientation and edge conditions.
  5. Check room-use assumptions. Record the expected speech, music, congregation and hall configurations, including the sky-fold walls open and closed.
  6. Check fire documentation. Verify the complete visible-and-concealed lining assembly against the applicable public-assembly requirements, not only the timber face.
  7. Commission completion measurements. Compare the occupied-room results with the agreed speech and music criteria, and retain a record for future maintenance or alterations.

How to read future claims about “acoustic timber panels”

When a project announcement uses that phrase, look for three layers of evidence. First is the architectural description: where the panels appear and how they relate to the room. Second is the construction specification: timber, profile, spacing, backing, mounting and finish. Third is performance evidence: laboratory data for the assembly or measurements in the completed room.

A project can have a convincing timber aesthetic without publishing the second or third layer. Conversely, a tested product may not have been used in the project named by a headline. Supplier category pages can explain available wall, ceiling, slat and lining systems, but they do not establish involvement in St James Chapel or provide independent proof of its acoustic result.

For this reason, the most accurate account of St James Chapel today is architectural rather than product-specific. The Castle Hill project clearly combines a 1965 chapel legacy, contemporary angled wall treatments, integrated light boxes and a flexible chapel-and-hall plan. The public record does not yet establish that bespoke acoustic timber panels transformed both its walls and ceilings, who supplied them or what acoustic improvement they delivered.
