There is no single universal finished quilt size for each bed label. Measure the mattress, choose how far the quilt should hang on the sides and foot, and decide whether it should fold over the pillows; use size charts only as starting points.
The examples below use common U.S. mattress dimensions and inches. A quilt that covers only the mattress top can start with the mattress footprint, while extra coverage requires added width and length.
Key takeaways
- Mattress dimensions and finished quilt dimensions describe different things: a quilt needs extra fabric for the coverage you want beyond the mattress top.
- Finished quilt width equals mattress width plus twice the desired side drop.
- Finished quilt length equals mattress length plus the desired foot drop, with an optional pillow-tuck allowance.
- Published size charts vary. Measure the actual mattress and intended hanging point rather than relying on a bed label.
- Cut size is the measurement before sewing; finished size is the measurement after the piece is sewn.
What are the standard quilt sizes?
Quilt sizes are conventions, not universal finished measurements. A queen quilt might be 90 × 95 inches in one chart, but the right size for a particular bed depends on its mattress and the desired side and foot coverage.

A mattress measurement describes the top surface. A finished quilt may need added width and length to hang over the sides and foot, and may need extra length to fold over pillows. A mattress-top-only quilt can use the mattress footprint as a minimum.

Use a chart as a starting point, then calculate the finished dimensions for the actual bed. Charts can assume different mattress dimensions, drops, pillow tucks, and uses.
Reference chart: common finished quilt sizes
The following are suggested finished quilt dimensions from Quilting Daily’s bed-size worksheet, not mandatory standards. Its suggestions reflect particular mattress and drop assumptions.
| Bed label | Example mattress dimensions | Suggested quilt dimensions | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crib or toddler | 28 × 52 in. | 36 × 60 in. | Check the mattress and intended use. |
| Twin or single | 39 × 76 in. | 70 × 90 in. | Check the actual mattress length and desired drop. |
| Twin XL | 39 × 80 in. | 70 × 95 in. | The extra mattress length affects the quilt length. |
| Full or double | 54 × 75 in. | 84 × 90 in. | Desired side drop affects the finished width. |
| Queen | 60 × 80 in. | 90 × 95 in. | Extra pillow coverage requires more length. |
| King | 78 × 80 in. | 108 × 95 in. | Measure the actual mattress and desired drop. |
| California king | 72 × 84 in. | 102 × 100 in. | This mattress is longer and narrower than a standard king. |
Mattress dimensions and chart conventions can differ by source. APQS, for example, lists some mattress references slightly differently and offers multiple quilt-size options by drop; its chart specifies a 20-inch pillow-tuck allowance. Treat that allowance as the chart’s assumption, not a universal rule.

These common U.S. mattress dimensions, in inches, are a reference rather than a substitute for measuring the bed. APQS lists the following examples:
| Mattress category | Example mattress size | What to account for in the quilt |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 39 × 75 in. | Add the side and foot drops you want. |
| Full or double | 54 × 75 in. | Allow for the desired coverage beyond the mattress top. |
| Queen | 60 × 80 in. | Choose side and foot drops, and any pillow tuck. |
| King | 76 × 80 in. | Measure the actual mattress; references can vary. |
| California king | 72 × 84 in. | Account for its longer, narrower footprint. |
These are mattress footprints, not finished quilt sizes. A finished quilt needs added dimensions only if you want coverage beyond the mattress top.
How do you measure a bed for a quilt?
Measure the mattress and the bed setup in which the quilt will be used. The drop is the distance from the top of the mattress to where you want the quilt edge to end.

- Set up the bed. Put on the sheets and any bedding that will normally be beneath the quilt.
- Measure the mattress width and length across the top surface.
- Measure the mattress depth. Note the distance from the top to the lower edge.
- Choose the side drop. Measure from the mattress top to the point where you want the quilt to end.
- Choose the foot drop. Consider whether a footboard or other obstruction limits the hang.
- Decide whether to include a pillow tuck. Add length only if you want the quilt to fold over the pillows.
- Check the bed setup. Account for unusual mattress depth, rails, platform edges, or other features that affect where the quilt can hang.
Measure the actual bed rather than assuming a pattern labeled “queen” will fit every queen mattress. For a longarm quilting service, confirm its backing and width requirements before preparing the quilt.

What formulas determine a finished quilt size?
Use finished dimensions for the quilt, not cutting dimensions for individual pieces.
Finished quilt width = mattress width + (2 × desired side drop)
Finished quilt length = mattress length + desired foot drop
Finished quilt length with pillow tuck = mattress length + desired foot drop + pillow-tuck allowance

Pillow-tuck allowances vary by chart. State the allowance you choose rather than treating one source’s figure as universal.

What size quilt do you need for a 60 × 80-inch queen mattress?
For a 60 × 80-inch mattress, a 12-inch drop on each side and a 12-inch drop at the foot produces an 84 × 92-inch quilt before any pillow tuck. This example follows Quilting Daily’s worksheet; measure the preferred hanging point and adjust the calculation if the drop differs.
| Measurement | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Width | 60 + (2 × 12) | 84 in. |
| Length before pillow tuck | 80 + 12 | 92 in. |
Add a pillow-tuck allowance only if the quilt is intended to fold over the pillows. The 90 × 95-inch queen suggestion in Quilting Daily’s chart is another reference, not a universal fit.
How much overhang should a quilt have?
There is no single required overhang. Measure from the mattress top to the point where you want the quilt edge to end, then use that distance as the drop in the formulas.
- Mattress-top coverage: Start with the mattress footprint if you do not want a hang over the sides or foot.
- Everyday bed quilt: Choose side and foot drops that provide the coverage you want on the made bed.
- Deeper coverage: Choose a larger drop, checking that the bed frame and footboard do not interfere.
A pillow tuck adds length for fabric folded over pillows. Published charts use different allowances; for example, APQS specifies 20 inches for its chart. Treat that as a source-specific assumption and choose based on your bed and intended coverage.
Why are quilt size charts different?
Charts differ because they use different mattress references and assumptions about the drop, pillow tuck, and intended coverage. Differences do not necessarily mean that one chart is wrong.
- Mattress dimensions differ by reference: Some sources list slightly different measurements for a bed label.
- Drop varies: A quilt intended to cover only the mattress top needs less width and length than one with a deeper hang.
- Pillow-tuck assumptions vary: Some chart lengths include pillow coverage; others do not.
- Bed setup matters: Mattress depth and frame features affect where the quilt can hang.
- Pattern dimensions matter: A pattern’s block grid and borders may not produce a chart size exactly.
What is the difference between cut size and finished size?
Cut size is the measurement of a fabric piece before sewing. Finished size is its measurement after it has been sewn into a piece, block, or unit. Do not treat a pattern’s cut-piece measurement as the finished dimension of the quilt.

Before cutting a bed quilt, verify the following:
- finished block size;
- number of blocks across and down;
- sashing and finished border widths;
- seam allowance;
- whether listed dimensions describe the quilt top or the finished quilt;
- backing and batting dimensions and instructions.
How can you adjust a quilt pattern to fit your measured size?
Compare your target finished dimensions with the pattern’s finished block grid before buying fabric or cutting pieces. A pattern labeled for a bed size may not provide the drop or pillow coverage you want.
Possible adjustments include adding or removing borders, changing the number of blocks, changing block size, or altering sashing. Keep calculations in finished dimensions until the target size and grid are settled; then convert the design to cut sizes using the pattern’s seam allowance.
Check the final coverage on the actual bed. A slightly different finished dimension may be preferable to forcing an awkward partial block into the design.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.How much larger should batting be than the quilt top?
Batting needs to extend beyond the quilt top during assembly, but the required margin depends on the batting product and quilting method. Check the package instructions against the actual quilt-top dimensions before buying.
For longarm quilting, APQS says backing is typically 6–8 inches wider than the quilt top to allow stitching beyond the edges and room for clamps. Confirm the service’s specific backing and width requirements before preparing a large quilt.

FAQ
What size should my quilt be?
Measure the mattress, decide how far the quilt should hang on the sides and foot, and calculate the finished dimensions from those choices. Add length if you want a pillow tuck.
What size is a queen quilt?
There is no universal finished queen size. Quilting Daily suggests 90 × 95 inches, but the right dimensions depend on the actual mattress, desired drop, and whether you want pillow coverage.
How do I figure out what size quilt fits my bed?
Measure the mattress width and length and choose the drop. Add twice the side drop to the width and add the foot drop to the length; include a stated pillow-tuck allowance if needed.
Does a quilt size chart include pillow tuck?
Not always. Chart assumptions vary. Check whether the stated length includes a pillow tuck, and add the allowance you want if it does not.
