Official StarWars.com pumpkin stencils include Porgs, Chewbacca, Kylo Ren, Stormtrooper, Darth Vader, a TIE fighter, an X-wing, Darth Maul, BB-8 and a Star Wars logo. Print a chosen pattern, transfer its lines to a hollow pumpkin, then carve the marked design. The collection was published October 21, 2017, so confirm that the page and downloads remain available before you begin.

Picking a pattern

Supplies for a Star Wars jack-o’-lantern
For a basic stencil project, gather:
- A pumpkin with a surface large enough for the printed pattern
- Newspaper or paper bags to protect the work area
- The printed stencil
- Scissors
- Tape
- A pushpin
- Pumpkin-carving tools
- A red LED light or battery-powered candle
A carving kit is convenient but not required by the stencil method. A hobby knife, carbon paper, paint, brushes and toothpicks appear as optional supplies in a related Chewbacca-and-Porg project; use them only if your design calls for extra precision or decoration. Adjust the print size for a smaller pumpkin.

How to transfer and carve the stencil
StarWars.com’s Andor project, published October 10, 2022, demonstrates this sequence. An adult should supervise the activity, especially whenever cutting tools are in use.
- Protect the surface. Cover a sturdy work area with newspaper or paper bags.
- Prepare the pumpkin. Cut an opening, remove the seeds and scrape out loose stringy pulp so the interior is easier to illuminate.
- Print and trim the pattern. Print the stencil at a size that fits the pumpkin. Cut around the symbol, leaving about 1 inch of paper margin.
- Position the paper. Tape the stencil to the pumpkin. Fold or crease the paper as needed so it follows the curved surface without moving.
- Mark the outline. Use a pushpin to prick along every stencil line. The Andor tutorial recommends dots no more than 1 centimeter apart; closer pinholes help on tight curves and detailed sections.
- Remove the stencil. Peel the paper away carefully and check that the dotted outline is complete before cutting.
- Carve from the center outward. Follow the marks with a pumpkin-carving tool, working on interior details before outer edges so the remaining pumpkin supports the design.
- Clean the openings. Brush away scraps and check that narrow cuts are fully open and that separated pieces have not broken.
- Add the light. Place a red LED light or battery-powered candle inside, then set the pumpkin where it cannot be knocked over.
Safety rules that matter
- Keep adult supervision present throughout the carving activity, as stated on both the Star Wars stencil collection and Andor tutorial.
- Use pumpkin-carving tools as directed and keep fingers behind the cutting edge.
- Work on a stable, protected surface and cut away from your body.
- Battery-powered lighting avoids an open flame. If you use a candle, never leave it unattended; Disney’s stencil instructions give the same warning.
- Do not let children handle sharp knives or pushpins without direct adult control.
Ways to make the design read clearly
Use contrast deliberately
Thin openings can disappear in daylight. Keep major exterior cuts broad enough to see, and use a bright LED inside after dark.

Respect the pumpkin’s curve
Patterns with long straight wings or lettering may distort on a narrow pumpkin. A wider pumpkin, smaller print or extra paper folds will help the stencil sit flat.

Preserve supporting sections
Do not remove every area around a small feature at once. Leave connecting strips until nearby cuts are finished, then widen openings carefully.

Test before the final display
Turn on the light while the pumpkin is still on your work surface. This reveals blocked openings, weak details and areas that need a little more trimming.
Common problems and fixes

Optional finishing touches
A battery-operated tea light can provide a simple glow, while a red LED echoes the color suggested in the Andor project. The related Chewbacca-and-Porg instructions also mention paint, brushes and toothpicks for embellishment, but those additions are optional and are not needed for a standard printed-stencil carve.
