The Striking Black-and-White Quilt is a batik throw pattern by Mabeth Oxenreider, designed around black-and-white blocks, black sashing and controlled red accents. The finished quilt measures 63 × 73 inches, with 8-inch finished blocks. Its repeated diagonal-corner construction rewards careful marking and consistent quarter-inch seams.
What the pattern makes
The design uses 30 black-and-white batik squares framed by pieced sashing and borders. Red fabric supplies the accent color, while the black-and-white batiks create the high-contrast field. The project page, updated June 3, 2025, provides a downloadable pattern and credits Mabeth Oxenreider as designer.

Fabric and supplies
The published quantities assume 44/45-inch-wide, 100% cotton fabrics and include quarter-inch seam allowances. Gather the listed fabrics and backing before cutting so the repeated units and borders can be made to the pattern’s quantities.

You will also need a quilter’s pencil for diagonal marking. The pattern suggests placing 220-grit sandpaper beneath the small squares while marking to help prevent stretching.

How the pieced center is assembled
Make the sashing units
Mark diagonal lines on the red squares. Pair them with black-batik sashing rectangles, sew and trim with a quarter-inch seam allowance, then press the units open. Make 71 sashing units. Consistent marking, trimming and pressing help keep the repeated pieces aligned as the rows are joined.
Build the rows
Arrange 30 black-and-white squares, the 71 sashing units and 42 remaining red 2½-inch squares into 13 horizontal rows. The pieced center should measure 52½ × 62½ inches before adding the inner borders.

Add the inner border and outer borders
Make 26 triangle-squares from red and black 2⅞-inch squares for the inner borders. Once those borders are attached, the center measures 56½ × 66½ inches. Add the pieced black outer borders using two strips measuring 4 × 73½ inches and two measuring 4 × 56½ inches.

The published sample uses large machine stippling across the quilt body, outline quilting ¼ inch from the stars formed by the sashing, and straight lines spaced 2 inches apart in the borders. These treatments follow the design’s contrast and geometry without competing with the blocks.

For the binding, cut and join seven 2½ × 42-inch strips of solid black. The designer also describes piecing leftover scraps into the back: “I love to use my leftover scraps to piece the back. It keeps me from accumulating too many extra pieces in my stash, and I think it adds an element of surprise.”
