A rotating disco ball associated by Architectural Digest with New York’s Studio 54 throws rainbow flecks across a sunroom in Atlanta’s Druid Hills neighborhood. The ball is the memorable image, but the larger story is a 1919 Italianate estate that its owners and designer reshaped for everyday family life, parties and indoor-outdoor entertaining. The house keeps its historic character while its interiors use saturated color, exuberant pattern, vintage pieces and sculptural lighting to avoid feeling museum-like.

What the Atlanta house is—and what it is not
Architectural Digest describes the property as a 1919 Italianate estate in Atlanta’s Druid Hills neighborhood, designed by late architect Arthur Neal Robinson Senior. The neighborhood was first designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, a planning history that places the house within one of Atlanta’s most deliberately landscaped historic districts.
The home-tour feature reports approximately 8,000 square feet, five bedrooms and six bathrooms. Those figures are property details reported by Architectural Digest; they have not been independently verified here. The article does not establish a precise original construction date beyond identifying the house as dating to 1919, and it does not provide a separate architectural survey.

Calling the building itself an “Art Deco house” would be too broad. Its architectural description is Italianate. The Art Deco reference applies to the interior atmosphere the feature says the house retains: a decorative language of graphic contrast, glamour and strong geometry layered into an older structure.
The owners’ brief: preserve the bones, loosen the formality
Jacqueline Hovarth and her husband bought the estate for their young family. Hovarth said, “We wanted to honor the architecture of the home.” That objective set a boundary for the renovation: update the rooms without erasing the features that make an early-20th-century Atlanta house distinctive.
Atlanta-based designer Bradley Odom interpreted the brief through color and use rather than strict period restoration. His rooms combine saturated paint, patterned textiles, vintage finds and sculptural furniture with places designed for people to sit, eat and move around. Odom described one central problem this way: “One of the project’s biggest design challenges was figuring out how to keep the house approachable.”
Approachability in this context does not mean neutral finishes or minimal decoration. It means arranging dramatic objects so that a family can live around them. Seating is grouped for conversation, circulation remains legible, and high-impact surfaces are balanced by practical gathering areas. The result is intentionally inviting rather than precious or overly formal.
The disco ball’s room: a sunroom built for movement and light
The feature places the rotating disco ball in a sunroom, where it scatters rainbow sparkles over vintage rattan furniture. The image caption says the homeowners bought the ball on 1stDibs and describes it as a beloved object from New York nightclub Studio 54. That association is the article’s description; the feature supplies no independent authentication or provenance documentation for the ball.

The setting matters as much as the object. A disco ball needs a beam or strong point of light, open sightlines and enough ceiling clearance for reflected points to travel across walls and furniture. In this sunroom, rattan keeps the mood relaxed and tactile. Daylight can animate the room, while the motorized ball turns an evening gathering into a moving pattern of light rather than a static display.
The room also fits the house’s broader indoor-outdoor strategy. The home-tour feature describes spaces planned for frequent parties, with guests able to circulate between more formal rooms and areas that feel casual. The ball is therefore not treated as a novelty isolated in a gallery-like corner; it is part of the home’s social infrastructure.
Room by room: how color and pattern carry the concept
Lacquered butler’s pantry
The butler’s pantry is finished in Benjamin Moore Lafayette Green with a lacquered surface. A deep, glossy green gives a service space visual authority and reinforces the house’s jewel-toned palette. Lacquer also changes how light behaves: reflections sharpen edges, brighten the working area and make a compact room feel intentional rather than secondary.
For a historic house, a pantry is a useful place to take a strong color risk. It is connected to entertaining but is not usually the first room visitors occupy, so the finish can be dramatic without competing with every architectural detail at once.
Dining room with Namban wallcovering
The dining room uses de Gournay’s Namban wallcovering. Its presence adds narrative surface and pattern to a room already associated with ceremony. Rather than relying on a single period style, the design lets a highly decorative wall treatment sit within the Italianate shell and participate in the interior’s Art Deco-inflected glamour.

In a dining room, a patterned wallcovering also works at seated eye level. Guests experience its detail over the course of a meal, while the larger composition gives the room a clear identity when viewed from adjoining spaces.
Receiving room
The receiving room pairs Dedar Tiger Mountain jacquard velvet with a blown-glass chandelier by Trueing. The combination sets up a deliberate contrast: a dense, tactile textile against a light-catching, sculptural fixture. Velvet absorbs and deepens color; blown glass redirects light and introduces irregularity. Together they keep the room from reading as a flat collection of matching surfaces.
This is a useful example of Odom’s approach. The room feels formal in its materials, but the saturated color and sculptural shapes prevent it from becoming stiff. Objects are allowed to be theatrical while the overall arrangement remains usable for conversation.
Drawing room
The drawing room continues the saturated palette and combines it with sculptural furniture. The emphasis is on silhouette as much as upholstery: curved or sharply profiled pieces create a visual rhythm that can hold its own against strong walls and textiles.
Because the room is part of a sequence, its impact depends on what happens before and after it. A visitor moves from one intensity to another rather than encountering every statement at once. That progression is what makes a richly decorated house feel coherent.

Procession: the circulation plan behind the party-ready rooms
Odom said, “There’s a procession that now naturally happens in this house.” The remark explains why the project reads as more than a set of individually photogenic rooms. Doorways, views and changes in color guide movement through the estate.
A typical sequence might begin in a receiving space, continue toward the dining room or pantry, and open into the sunroom or another area connected to the outdoors. Each stop offers a different sensory cue: glossy green, patterned wallcovering, velvet, glass, rattan or the moving reflections of the disco ball. The variety gives guests reasons to circulate while preserving the legibility of the historic plan.
For a family home, procession also solves a practical problem. Rooms can feel special without being reserved for rare occasions when the path between them is intuitive and seating is plentiful. The design treats entertaining as a normal mode of living rather than a performance that requires closing off the house.
Italianate architecture with an Art Deco interior mood
The distinction between exterior architecture and interior feeling is essential. Italianate houses are associated with 19th-century forms such as vertical proportions, bracketed details and an emphasis on ornament, while Art Deco is a later decorative language known for glamour, geometry and polished contrast. The feature does not claim that the 1919 estate is an Art Deco building in a strict historical classification.

Vintage furniture and contemporary pieces can therefore coexist with the house’s original character. The tension is productive: the shell supplies history, while the furnishings supply energy.

That layered approach is more accurate than treating every decorative choice as a period recreation. It also explains why the disco ball feels at home. Its cultural reference is 1970s nightlife, but its reflected light interacts with the room’s older proportions and Art Deco-leaning palette.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to recreate the mood without copying the house
The Atlanta estate offers principles rather than a shopping list. If you want a similarly lively interior, begin with the architecture you already have and build outward.
- Identify the room’s structural character. Note original trim, window proportions, ceiling height and the path between adjoining rooms before choosing furniture or paint.
- Choose one high-impact color. A pantry, hallway or small sitting room can carry a saturated hue such as a lacquered green without forcing every room into the same intensity.
- Layer pattern at different scales. Pair a large wall pattern with a smaller textile or rug motif so the eye has a hierarchy rather than a wall of competing prints.
- Mix tactile and reflective surfaces. Velvet, rattan and wood provide absorption and warmth; lacquer, glass and polished metal return light.
- Use vintage pieces for character, not a period set. A single older chair, lamp or table can anchor a room while contemporary furniture keeps it comfortable.
- Plan seating around conversation. Arrange chairs and sofas so people can face one another, and keep a clear route between the entrance, dining areas and outdoor connections.
- Add theatrical lighting where it serves the room. A rotating disco ball works best when its motor is secure, its hanging point is rated for the load and a controllable light source can reach its mirrored surface.
- Test the room at night. Daylight reveals color and texture; evening light determines whether the room feels welcoming or visually harsh.
Choosing a contemporary disco ball as a functional analogue
A modern rotating disco ball can recreate the moving-light effect, but it is not the vintage object described in the home tour and should not be presented as having Studio 54 history. Evaluate it as lighting equipment.
| Specification | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Diameter | Measure the room and ceiling height before choosing a size. | A larger sphere throws a stronger visual presence but needs more clearance. |
| Motor and rotation | Look for stated rotation speed, noise information and a secure mounting method. | Quiet, steady movement is better for a living room or dining area than a rattling motor. |
| Lighting source | Confirm whether the unit includes an LED, requires a separate spotlight or supports both. | The mirrored surface cannot create moving spots without directed light. |
| Effects | Check for single-color, multicolor or programmable lighting modes. | Color options change the mood and determine whether the fixture complements existing finishes. |
| Mounting | Verify ceiling hardware, load rating, cable length and whether a professional installation is needed. | Overhead objects must be secured independently of decorative hooks or lightweight ceiling material. |
| Indoor suitability | Confirm that the unit is rated for indoor use and keep it away from moisture. | A sunroom may experience temperature and humidity changes even when it is enclosed. |
Keep the installation proportional to the room. In a compact space, a small sphere and a dimmable spotlight can suggest the effect without overwhelming furniture or blocking sightlines. In a larger entertaining room, the ball can become a central focal point, provided guests can move safely beneath it.
What the feature documents—and what remains unconfirmed
- Documented by the home tour: a 1919 Italianate estate in Druid Hills; architect Arthur Neal Robinson Senior; approximately 8,000 square feet; five bedrooms; six bathrooms; owners Jacqueline Hovarth and her husband; designer Bradley Odom; and a sunroom disco ball described as associated with Studio 54 and purchased on 1stDibs.
- Described interior elements: a Lafayette Green lacquered butler’s pantry, de Gournay Namban wallcovering in the dining room, Dedar Tiger Mountain jacquard velvet and a Trueing blown-glass chandelier in the receiving room, plus saturated hues and sculptural furniture in the drawing room.
- Not independently established in the feature: authentication or provenance records for the disco ball, an exact publication date for the web-exclusive tour, an independent measurement of the floor area or room count, and a formal designation of the house as an Art Deco building.
Those limits do not diminish the design lesson. The strongest idea is not that one historic object can transform a house; it is that a historic structure can absorb exuberant, contemporary references when color, circulation and comfort are considered together.
Why the Atlanta disco-ball image endures
The disco ball is memorable because it compresses the project’s argument into one scene. It is glamorous but playful, historically suggestive but not treated as a museum artifact, and visually dramatic while sitting above ordinary rattan furniture. The contrast captures the owners’ goal of honoring the architecture without becoming solemn.
In this Druid Hills estate, the past supplies the framework and the present supplies the permission to enjoy it. Italianate architecture, an Art Deco interior mood, 1970s nightlife references and family-scale hospitality all occupy the same sequence of rooms. The result is a historic Atlanta home that feels designed for actual gatherings—not merely photographed for them.
