Studio Ghibli’s Response to ChatGPT’s Ghibli-Style Images—and What r/ghibli Can Tell You

ChatGPT’s image-generation launch triggered a wave of Ghibli-style images. Studio Ghibli declined to comment to the AP in March 2025; r/ghibli shows participating fans’ views, not an official or representative response.

OpenAI’s ChatGPT image-generation launch sparked a wave of images made to resemble Studio Ghibli films. In an Associated Press report published March 27, 2025, Studio Ghibli in Japan declined to comment. The fan subreddit r/ghibli offers a place to see participating fans’ reactions, but it is not an official channel or a measure of what all fans think.

Why were people posting Studio Ghibli-style AI images?

OpenAI announced image generation in ChatGPT on March 25, 2025. The following day, reports described people sharing AI-made images that evoked Studio Ghibli films, including transformations of personal photographs, memes and public figures. The rapid spread through social feeds made the trend highly visible, though the cited coverage does not establish how many images were generated or how prevalent the posts were overall.

OpenAI described its policy as refusing requests to imitate the style of individual living artists while allowing broader studio-style prompts. The company told TechCrunch it permitted “broader studio styles”; in a statement reported by the AP, OpenAI said people had used them to make “truly delightful and inspired original fan creations.” Those are the company’s descriptions of its product policy and outputs, not a legal ruling or a guarantee about every generated image.

Has Studio Ghibli commented?

The AP reported on March 27, 2025 that Studio Ghibli in Japan declined to comment that Friday. That establishes the studio’s response to the AP at that time; it does not establish that the studio has never commented since. The contemporaneous reporting cited here does not provide a later Studio Ghibli statement.

What can the r/ghibli subreddit tell you?

r/ghibli is a fan forum where readers can inspect posts and discussion from people who choose to participate. It may offer examples of how some fans responded to the AI-image trend. A subreddit discussion cannot establish an official Studio Ghibli position, represent all Ghibli fans, or show a reliable consensus. Nor does the available coverage provide a verified count of reactions or a basis for summarizing specific arguments as the community’s view.

It helps to keep four kinds of evidence separate: statements from the studio or rights holders, OpenAI’s explanation of its product rules, individual artists’ views, and posts by individual fans. One is not a substitute for another.

What are the copyright and ethical questions?

The viral images raised two distinct questions: whether copyrighted works were used to train image-generation models, and whether a particular generated image might reproduce protected expression. The AP reported that OpenAI did not answer its question about whether it had a license for training on Ghibli or Hayao Miyazaki works. A lawyer quoted in that report distinguished the general principle that style itself is not copyrightable from the possibility that a particular output could contain specific, recognizable elements of a protected work. TechCrunch also described the broader legal questions as unresolved amid active litigation concerning AI training.

The coverage does not establish that the trend was definitively lawful or unlawful. A prompt invoking a studio’s style and an output that reproduces recognizable protected material are not necessarily the same legal question; the cited reporting does not resolve how any particular image would be assessed.

What did Hayao Miyazaki say about AI?

During the 2025 debate, Miyazaki’s 2016 reaction to an AI animation demonstration resurfaced. The AP reported that, after seeing the crude demonstration shown at that time, he said, “I strongly feel that this is an insult to life itself.” That was a response to the 2016 demonstration—not a comment on OpenAI’s 2025 image generator.
