Studio Situation Update: One Wall Finished, a Clear Plan for the Rest

A finished mural wall can hide a much larger studio project. This practical assessment covers work-table organization, sectional painting, HVAC access, heavy-box moving, adhesive tile removal, and pacing after sciatica.

The studio is not close to finished simply because one mural wall is complete. Kristi Linauer’s October 12, 2023 progress report describes a finished feature wall surrounded by full work tables, an unusable storage closet, a half-installed bathroom, unfinished doors, and large areas of ceiling and wall still awaiting paint. The practical response is to treat the room as a sequence of small work zones, not one giant makeover.

That approach matters even more because Linauer was returning after about ten days in bed or on the floor with severe sciatica. A safe plan must restore access and airflow before it creates more lifting, ladder work, or overhead strain.

What the current studio situation actually includes

The visible win is the mural wall: its cabinets and drawers are finished and provide substantial storage for tools and supplies. The rest of the project extends well beyond that wall, however. The studio connects to a storage closet, half bathroom, and back entryway, so a realistic assessment has to include every connected area.

  • Main room: most of the remaining ceiling and walls need fresh coats of paint.
  • Doors: two doors still need trimming and both are planned to be painted black.
  • Work tables: caulk, tools, art supplies, and other materials have accumulated on both surfaces, making them the room’s biggest day-to-day obstruction.
  • Storage closet: boxes that may have been there for roughly five years have left the closet in what Linauer calls an “absolute disaster.”
  • HVAC access: the studio heating and cooling unit is in that closet, but clutter has reduced the airflow around it. The room has consequently gone without studio air conditioning and could also lose dependable heat access.
  • Bathroom: installation of a dowel-rod accent row is about halfway complete, while yellow tile remains attached with double-sided adhesive.
  • Back entry: it is slated for a softer green drawn from the mural and bathroom wallpaper.
  • Ceiling light: the black portions of the fixture are planned for gold leaf.
  • Carport: sanding and painting there must wait until current carport work is finished.

This is why “one wall finished” and “the studio is nearly done” are very different statements. The mural is a completed zone, not evidence that the circulation, storage, mechanical access, and finishing work are complete.

Choose the first zone by risk and access

There are three defensible starting points. The best choice depends on whether the immediate problem is mechanical access, a usable work surface, or storage of the finished wall’s contents.

Starting sequence First action Best fit Trade-off
HVAC first Clear a safe airflow path around the closet unit before sorting every box. Use this when heating or cooling access is urgent or the unit is obstructed. The closet may remain visually messy while you create the minimum operating clearance.
Work tables first Sort, contain, and remove the piles from both tables. Use this when you need a safe surface for labeling, repairs, or painting preparation. Some boxes may need temporary placement elsewhere in the already crowded room.
Cabinets first Assign categories to the finished mural-wall drawers and cabinets, then move matching supplies into them. Use this when the completed storage is accessible and can absorb the table piles. Filling cabinets without a category plan can hide supplies rather than organize them.

Linauer’s stated next move was probably the work tables: pick one area, finish it, and then continue. That is a useful operating rule. Select one bounded zone, define what “finished” means, and do not open a second major project until the first zone is usable.

How to reclaim the work tables without losing supplies

The tables are the most visible obstruction and the easiest place to create momentum. Work one table at a time so at least one surface remains available for sorting.

  1. Photograph the starting layout. A quick record preserves visual clues about unfinished projects and prevents the “where did that go?” problem.
  2. Make four temporary groups. Use “keep on the table,” “store in mural-wall cabinets,” “move to the closet,” and “dispose or donate.” Keep the groups physically separate.
  3. Contain small items immediately. Put loose fasteners, brushes, caulk tools, and art supplies into labeled containers rather than creating a new mixed pile.
  4. Keep active work together. If a project is unfinished, place its materials in one box or tray and label the project. A contained project can leave the table without being lost.
  5. Move heavy containers with equipment. Use a furniture dolly or sliders where possible instead of repeatedly lifting boxes or paint buckets. Check the equipment’s rated load before placing anything on it.
  6. Clean the empty surface. Once the table is clear, wipe it, inspect for damage, and decide whether repainting is a small next project or should wait until larger access work is complete.
  7. Repeat on the second table. Do not use the first cleared table as a permanent drop zone for the second one.

The goal is not a perfect inventory on the first pass. It is a stable, labeled system that returns both work surfaces to usable condition and makes later painting possible.

Painting a full room in sections when nothing can be moved out

Because there is no spare unfinished room for temporary storage, emptying the studio completely is not a workable prerequisite. Painting in sections is the practical workaround, but it requires a controlled boundary between the active section and the stored contents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Map the room. Mark one wall or ceiling segment that can be reached without climbing over boxes or working directly above an unstable pile.
  2. Protect the inactive zone. Consolidate supplies, cover them, and keep a clear walking lane. Do not let drop cloths become trip hazards.
  3. Finish one section before opening another. Complete its preparation, paint application, cleanup, and drying period before shifting the boundary.
  4. Keep tools mobile. Place brushes, rollers, caulk, and cleaning materials in one movable tote so the active zone can change without scattering supplies.
  5. Use access as the deciding factor. The office area may be the next work zone, but the order depends on where materials can safely be staged and which carport work is still blocking sanding and painting.
  6. Protect finished areas. When moving supplies past the mural wall or a freshly painted section, cover edges and avoid dragging loads across the floor.

This method trades speed for access. It also reduces the amount of furniture and material that must be moved at once, which is important during physical recovery.

Clear the storage closet without blocking the HVAC unit

The closet has two jobs: storage and housing for the studio HVAC equipment. Mechanical access takes priority over making every box look neat. Start by creating a clear approach and airflow path around the unit, then sort the remaining contents in smaller batches.

  • Remove only what can be staged safely in the studio without blocking the work lanes.
  • Group boxes by whether they contain current studio supplies, long-term storage, or items that can leave the room.
  • Label containers on more than one visible side so they can be identified after stacking.
  • Keep the unit, its controls, and any service access unobstructed.
  • Do not stack supplies where they can fall against the equipment or restrict ventilation.

The approximate five-year age of some boxes is a reason to inspect contents before returning them to the closet, not a reason to pull every box out at once. A staged, category-by-category approach limits the amount of material that must be moved twice.

Moving heavy boxes and paint supplies with less strain

Furniture dollies are the most directly relevant aid described in the report. A commenter said she used about eight dollies for five-gallon paint buckets and boxes, explaining that dollies and sliders minimized lifting and moving. The useful lesson is the method, not a particular brand or model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Load only what the dolly is rated to carry, and keep the weight centered.
  • Push rather than pull when the route and visibility allow it.
  • Clear thresholds, cords, and drop cloths before moving a loaded dolly.
  • Use sliders for short repositioning of furniture when a dolly cannot fit underneath.
  • Ask for a second person when an item is awkward, top-heavy, or difficult to steer.
  • Break a large load into several smaller trips instead of carrying a box that compromises your balance.

If moving equipment still leaves repeated lifting, twisting, or overhead handling, hired help may be the safer choice for that phase.

DIY or hired help: deciding what belongs in the plan

DIY is reasonable for labeling, light sorting, and small surface projects when you can maintain clear footing and stop before pain returns. Professional organizers or painting contractors become more useful when the room’s access problems, ladder work, or volume of material exceed what one person can handle safely.

Consideration DIY Hired help
Physical strain Lower only when work is divided into light, short sessions with minimal lifting. Useful for heavy boxes, repeated moves, and tasks that would aggravate recovery.
Ladders or scaffolding Requires the homeowner to manage overhead access and fall risk. Experienced crews can bring appropriate access equipment and a second worker.
Speed Progress follows the homeowner’s available time and energy. Several workers can clear, prep, and paint separate zones faster.
Cost Avoids a labor bill but still requires containers and moving aids. Adds labor expense; obtain a defined scope for sorting, moving, or painting.
Finish quality Depends on personal skill and the time available for preparation. May provide more consistent preparation and application for large or high-access areas.

A sensible hybrid is often narrower than hiring out the whole project: clear and label personal supplies yourself, then bring in help for heavy relocation, high work, or the final painting pass.

Complete the doors, entry, light, and bathroom in the right order

Doors and the carport constraint

The two doors still need trimming and are planned to be black. Sanding and painting may depend on the carport becoming available, so do not build the schedule around that work until the carport project has finished. Prepare tools and staging in advance, but keep the actual sanding and painting out of a blocked area.

Back-entry color

The back entry is planned for a softer green pulled from the mural and bathroom wallpaper. Treat it as a later, contained color project after traffic through the area has been reduced; otherwise supplies and foot traffic can damage a fresh finish.

Gold leaf on the ceiling fixture

The planned gold leaf belongs to the detail phase. Complete dusty sanding and broad wall or ceiling painting first, then protect surrounding surfaces before working on the black portions of the fixture. Overhead work should wait until a safe, stable access setup is available.

Removing the adhesive-backed yellow tile

The remaining bathroom tile has been difficult to remove because it is attached with double-sided adhesive. Linauer identified a hair dryer or heat gun as a possible way to soften that adhesive.

  1. Ventilate the bathroom and remove combustible items from the work area.
  2. Test gentle heat on a small, inconspicuous section first.
  3. Warm the adhesive gradually rather than concentrating heat in one spot.
  4. Lift an edge with a suitable scraper while keeping hands clear of the softened adhesive and tool.
  5. Stop if the wall surface, tile substrate, or surrounding finish begins to discolor or deform.
  6. Allow the area to cool before cleaning residue and assessing the surface for the next installation step.

A hair dryer offers less heat than a heat gun and may be easier to control for a small bathroom task. Whichever tool is used, the objective is to loosen the adhesive without scorching the wall or spreading residue.

Pace the work around recovery

Returning after severe sciatica does not make ladder, overhead, or heavy-moving work automatically safe. The comments around the report repeatedly caution against those activities during recovery. Use pain and stability as stop signals, not as challenges to push through.

  • Begin with seated or waist-height sorting before any ladder work.
  • Keep sessions short enough that symptoms do not escalate later in the day.
  • Change position regularly instead of bending over a box for a prolonged period.
  • Use a second person for awkward loads and high items.
  • Stop when footing, balance, or movement becomes uncertain.

The most productive day may be the one that finishes a single table section without causing a setback. A completed, usable zone is more valuable than several partially opened piles.

A practical definition of “finished” for this studio

For this project, a zone is finished when its surfaces are accessible, its supplies have a labeled home, its walking route is clear, and the next trade can work without undoing the previous one. By that standard, the mural wall is finished, but the studio as a whole is still in the recovery-and-access phase.

Start with the work tables or the HVAC clearance, depending on which creates the greater immediate risk. Use dollies and sliders to reduce lifting, paint in controlled sections because the room cannot be emptied, and defer ladder-heavy details until the body and the workspace can support them. That sequence turns an overwhelming collection of connected tasks into a series of decisions that can actually be completed.
