A stylized Christmas tree can be a wall-hung branch outline, a sculptural tabletop form, or a macramé design—not one standardized kind of tree. Choose by where you want to display it, which materials and textures suit your room, and whether you want to make the decoration yourself. For a painted tabletop centerpiece, the air-dry-clay spiral is the most direct fit; the branch and macramé options offer different ways to use vertical space or fiber texture.

Choose a style by where it will go
For a wall or a room with little floor space
The branch design is a flat, wall-hung silhouette rather than a freestanding tree. STAEDTLER’s project uses branches of varying widths, fastened with natural twine into a triangle, with approximately 15 cm between branches. Its vertical display avoids taking up floor space and leaves room to add ornaments.

For a table or mantel
The clay spiral creates a small sculptural tree. My 100 Year Old Home’s example is about 10 inches tall; the author recommends using a shorter cone for a smaller tabletop version. The surface is a good option if you want a form you can paint, rather than the exposed wood and fiber textures of the other designs.
For fiber texture or a mix of display sizes
Bochiknot’s five macramé designs include small ornaments, a wall hanging, and a 3D tabletop tree. Cotton cord is the common material named in the tutorial, with additional components varying by design. This range lets you choose a hanging piece or a small object for a surface without treating them as the same project.

How to make the air-dry-clay tabletop tree
My 100 Year Old Home’s tutorial forms a clay spiral around a cardstock cone, adds a clay star, lets the form dry, and then paints it. The directions below reflect that author’s project, not independently tested instructions.
Gather the project materials
- Air-dry modeling clay
- A rolling pin
- A craft knife or clay tool
- Cardstock for the cone
- Paint and a brush
Form, dry, and paint
- Make a cone from cardstock to set the tree’s height and support its shape.
- Roll the clay, then wrap it around the cone in a spiral. Use a clay tool or craft knife as needed to work the clay.
- Add a star made from clay at the top.
- Keep the form supported while it dries, as the tutorial recommends. Drying time varies with clay thickness and humidity.
- Once dry, paint the tree with a brush.
Air-dry modeling clay belongs to this tabletop-tree method; it is not a requirement for the branch or macramé designs. For the separate STAEDTLER ornament project, FIMO soft is oven-bake clay used to make ornaments, not the material specified for the air-dry-clay tree.

How painting fits the other designs
Painting is part of the clay-tree tutorial: its author paints the dried form. The branch project instead describes personalizing the wall display with handmade wooden-disc and FIMO ornaments. The macramé tutorial centers on cord and design-specific additions such as beads or cinnamon sticks; it does not establish painting as a required step. Pick the material path that suits the finish you want rather than assuming every stylized tree needs paint or clay.
