To draw a stylized flower, start with a real flower or clear reference, identify its biggest shapes, then decide what to simplify, repeat, exaggerate, or leave out. “Stylized flowers” is a broad approach, not one formal art style: a flower can stay recognizable while its proportions, colors, linework, and details become more decorative or expressive.
What makes a flower stylized?
Stylization means making deliberate choices about how to represent a flower. You might preserve its recognizable center and petal arrangement but simplify each petal into a clean shape. Or you might enlarge the leaves, repeat the bloom in a pattern, flatten the perspective, or use color for mood rather than natural accuracy.
Think of stylization as a range rather than a set of strict categories. The useful question is not whether a drawing qualifies, but what it is trying to communicate—and which features help it do that.

Choose an approach for your drawing
| Approach | Main purpose | What to emphasize |
|---|---|---|
| Botanical or observational | Show a particular flower’s structure and identity. | Proportions, petal arrangement, leaves, and other identifying features. |
| Decorative motif | Create an ornamental image, repeat, garland, or pattern. | Clear silhouettes, rhythm, repetition, and pleasing arrangements of shapes and colors. |
| Expressive or abstract | Use a flower as a vehicle for shape, color, rhythm, or mood. | The features you choose to exaggerate, simplify, transform, or omit. |
These approaches can overlap. A decorative flower may retain recognizable anatomy, and an abstract image may begin with close observation. The National Gallery of Art’s Flowers overview places lavish Dutch floral still lifes alongside more abstract modern flower images, including work by Georgia O’Keeffe. The range shows how varied floral art can be without making every stylized flower part of one movement.
How to draw a stylized flower, step by step
- Choose a flower or reference. Work from a living plant or a clear image so you have something specific to observe. Kew’s guide to getting started with botanical art recommends using a reference and learning basic plant anatomy, including structures such as stamens and stigmas.
- Look at the big relationships first. Note the flower’s overall silhouette, where its center sits, how the petals are arranged, the direction of the stem, and the shapes of the leaves. Avoid drawing every petal edge at this stage.
- Reduce the flower to a few simple forms. Treat the bloom as a circle, cup, cluster, or other broad shape; consider leaves as ovals, points, or curved forms. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s botanical drawing activity focuses on composition and building shapes through simplified forms.
- Decide what the image is for. For a study, preserve the structure and proportions that identify the flower. For a decorative motif, arrange shapes for rhythm or repetition. For an expressive image, choose which features to enlarge, simplify, or omit to create a particular feeling.
- Make a small study in a suitable medium. Use pencil to explore structure, pen for a more decisive line, or watercolor for layered color. The best choice depends on the effect you want, not on a universal rule.
- Add only useful detail. Introduce petal edges, veins, or small structures only when they support your intention. Check whether the flower still reads clearly at the size where you plan to use it.
Use observation without getting stuck in realism
Observing a flower does not oblige you to draw it literally. It gives your simplifications something to work from. Notice which shapes repeat, which parts overlap, and what makes this bloom distinct from another. Then decide which of those observations matter to your image.

For a botanical study, that may mean keeping the flower’s proportions and structure. For a pattern, it may mean preserving a distinctive silhouette while simplifying the interior. For an expressive image, it may mean retaining only the features needed to suggest a flower at all. Smithsonian Archives of American Art’s Bloom: Flowers in the Archives of American Art describes artists observing and diagramming flower anatomy and life cycles, as well as flowers appearing in still-life imagery and personal correspondence.
Choose materials for the effect you want
You can begin with ordinary paper and a pencil or pen; the Met’s drawing activity uses simple paper-and-pencil materials. Kew identifies watercolor, pen and ink, and pencil as useful approaches to botanical art. Try them according to the job: pencil for exploratory structure, pen for line and definition, and watercolor for transparent layers of color. The Smithsonian’s January 2024 Plant Press article reports botanical artist Alice Tangerini demonstrating traditional and digital media and teaching with living cut flowers and herbarium specimens.

No specialized brand or supply is necessary to begin. A short study on basic paper can reveal whether your shapes, composition, and degree of simplification are working before you add more detail or color.

The Met’s Italian School embroidery designs, dated circa 1850–1900, show how flowers can be shaped for ornament rather than presented only as isolated botanical specimens. One design arranges garlands and labeled stylized flowers; another groups stylized flowers and leaves into bundles. Compare their arrangements and varied shapes in the collection records: Design for Embroidery with Two Large Garlands and a Variety of Labelled Stylized Flowers and Design for Embroidery with a Series of Bundles with Stylized Flowers and Leaves.
