A good summer table runner should fit the table, suit the occasion, and match the care you’re willing to give it. Measure the tabletop, choose how far you want the runner to hang over each end, then compare its fabric, care label, and intended use before settling on a floral, coastal, gingham, citrus, or other seasonal look.
How long should a summer table runner be?
Measure the table’s length, then add your preferred drop at both ends. Spoonflower describes a 6–12 inch (about 15–30 cm) overhang at each end as traditional; Manchester Collection gives a similar rule of thumb, suggesting a 210–240 cm runner for a 180 cm table. For reference, Spoonflower lists runners measuring 16 × 72, 16 × 90, and 16 × 108 inches. Measure the actual product rather than assuming every runner follows those sizes.

The second row is a calculation, not a fixed product size. A runner that barely overhangs gives a neater look; a longer drop creates more drape. Check that the hanging ends will not interfere with chairs, children, or serving.

Which summer style works for your table?
Summer does not require one particular motif. Sur La Table’s seasonal selection includes floral and garden prints, tropical and coastal designs, and gingham, as well as woven, embroidered, and quilted finishes. Choose a pattern that complements your dishes and the occasion: citrus can bring a bright accent to a casual meal, while a quieter woven texture can sit comfortably alongside patterned tableware. What fabric and care should you compare?
Composition and cleaning instructions go together. Cotton and linen are among the materials Sur La Table highlights, but the care directions depend on the specific runner. Read the item’s label or listing before buying; do not assume all cotton, linen, or printed runners can be washed the same way.

Check the product’s stated setting rather than inferring outdoor suitability from its fabric or print. The JCPenney Capri Lemon listing, for example, specifies indoor use. The available product details here do not establish that the other examples are suitable for outdoor exposure. For a patio table, look for an explicit outdoor-use statement from the seller and consider how wind, spills, and the surface beneath the runner affect your setup.

Should you buy a ready-made runner or sew one?
A ready-made runner is the simpler choice when you need a particular length or want stated care instructions.
