The Superlative episode “When Do You Know a Design Project Is Done,” featuring William Massena, is dated September 12, 2022. Its archive listing confirms the title, date, host and show focus. It does not disclose what Massena actually says about finishing a design, so this article covers what is verifiable and where to find the answer.
What the episode is
Superlative is a podcast about watches, the people who make them, and the wider worlds around them. The Podcast Republic archive identifies Ariel Adams, founder of aBlogtoWatch.com, as its host. The episode in question is listed under the title “SUPERLATIVE: WHEN DO YOU KNOW A DESIGN PROJECT IS DONE WITH WILLIAM MASSENA” and carries a listing date of September 12, 2022.
What the listing does and does not establish
The title is a framing device. It tells you the conversation is about how a designer decides a project has reached its end point. It does not tell you what that end point is, and it is not a quotation from Massena.
- Confirmed: the episode title, the guest’s name, the September 12, 2022 listing date, and the show’s watch focus with Ariel Adams as host.
- Not confirmed: Massena’s criteria for finishing a design, any anecdote he tells, and whether the discussion concerns client sign-off, constraints, craftsmanship, iteration or something else.
- Not available here: an official episode description, a transcript, or a verified quotation from the conversation.
Any summary of Massena’s position would require listening to the episode or reading a transcript. Until then, treat claims about what he “believes” as unsupported.

Why the question matters to painters
The question in the title applies directly to painting. Most painters know the moment a canvas stops improving and starts to lose freshness, but that instinct is hard to put into words, and it is easy to overwork a piece after it is already finished. A design-focused conversation about closure can be useful even when its subject is watches or industrial objects, because the underlying problem is the same: deciding when additional changes stop serving the work.
That is a reason to listen, not a substitute for listening. This article does not attribute any particular rule to the episode.

What to listen for as a painter
- Whether the criteria he describes are about the object’s function, its appearance, or the process of making it.
- Whether he distinguishes between a project being technically complete and being resolved.
- Whether the advice applies to a single piece or to a series, since painters often finish work at different points in a body of work.
