svg2solid is a free web tool that converts the colored regions of an SVG into separate STL files. You choose the extrusion depth, download the color-separated meshes, then assign each part to a filament in your slicer. That makes it useful for turning painted-style vector artwork—logos, badges, labels, signs, and emblems—into flat multicolor FDM prints.
The important distinction is that svg2solid does not put color information inside an STL. It creates separate 3D geometry for each color; your slicer and printer handle the filament assignments later.

An SVG is a two-dimensional vector drawing made from paths, fills, strokes, colors, and sometimes effects such as gradients or masks. An STL is a three-dimensional surface mesh. It has no dependable built-in concept of red, blue, or yellow filament.

That leaves a gap when you want to print a multicolor illustration. The printer needs either separate bodies assigned to different filaments, slicer painting data, or planned filament changes. svg2solid bridges the gap by turning each colored SVG region into a printable solid with a user-selected depth.
The basic interface provides an SVG upload, an extrusion-depth control, and STL downloads. The result is normally a group of files divided by color rather than one color-aware file. Keep the files together and label them clearly: the slicer will not necessarily know which downloaded part represents the background, outline, or lettering.
What artwork works best
svg2solid is most effective with flat artwork built from distinct, closed regions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Logos and icons
- Signs, plaques, and labels
- Badges and emblems
- Text converted to outlines
- Simple illustrations with solid fills
The official tool warns that colored paths should not overlap. Designs relying heavily on open strokes, gradients, transparency, filters, clipping effects, masks, or embedded bitmap effects are much less predictable. It is also not a replacement for a relief-modeling or CAD workflow when different areas need carefully controlled sculptural heights.
Prepare the SVG before uploading
Do not treat the SVG as automatically printable. Clean geometry is the difference between a useful set of STLs and missing lines, unexpected holes, or overlapping solids.
In Inkscape, make a backup copy first, then use this preparation sequence:
- Select the artwork.
- Choose Paths → Objects to Path.
- Convert strokes with Paths → Stroke to Path.
- Convert live text to paths and inspect the counters in letters such as A, B, O, and P.
- Remove hidden objects and effects that are not part of the intended print.
- Resolve overlapping colored regions.
- Check that every intended region is closed and visible.
- Save the cleaned SVG as a separate file.
Illustrator, Affinity Designer, CorelDRAW, and other vector editors can perform equivalent operations. The menu names above are the ones specified in svg2solid’s own instructions.

Suppose a blue letter sits on top of a yellow background. If both are full overlapping paths, the converter may generate both solids in the same area. Depending on how they are imported and sliced, that can produce unwanted intersections or an ambiguous stack.

A common Inkscape approach is to duplicate the background path, select the copy and the foreground shape, and use Path → Difference so the background has a cutout for the foreground. The exact operation depends on the artwork, but the goal is consistent: adjacent color regions should describe the physical result rather than merely overlap visually.
Complete SVG-to-print workflow
1. Create or obtain the artwork
Use solid fills and make the design large enough for the printer’s nozzle and line width. If a decorative line is narrower than the slicer can generate, it may disappear even though it looks clear on screen.
2. Clean and inspect the geometry
Convert objects, strokes, and text to paths. Remove unsupported effects, resolve overlaps, and save a cleaned copy. Zoom in on narrow gaps, letter counters, and outlines before conversion.
3. Upload the SVG
Open svg2solid, select the prepared file, and set an extrusion depth. The appropriate value depends on whether the regions form a raised face, a recessed design, or separate layers.
4. Choose a depth strategy
For a raised sign, make the background the main body and keep the visible color regions relatively shallow. A few layers can be enough for a colored face, reducing the amount of material that must be changed compared with making every color a full-height body. This is a practical sign-making approach, not a universal thickness specification.
As a starting point, a 0.40–0.60 mm colored region at a 0.20 mm layer height gives the slicer several layers to represent. The correct value still depends on the nozzle, line width, first-layer height, surface orientation, and desired durability. Preview the result rather than relying on a fixed minimum.
For recessed or genuinely layered artwork, use different depths deliberately. Parts should intersect or share a physically sensible interface. Merely touching surfaces can leave weak or ambiguous geometry.
5. Download and organize the STL files
Download every generated part. Rename copies if necessary—for example, background.stl, outline.stl, and lettering.stl—but retain the original files until you have confirmed that the names match the geometry.

6. Import the parts as one object
Load all STLs together using your slicer’s multi-part, assemble, merge, or “load as parts” workflow. Do not place them independently by eye. If the slicer does not recognize the common coordinates, the colors may appear in different locations.
Prusa’s multi-part model guide describes importing multiple STL files as one assembled object. Bambu Studio also supports multi-material and part-level workflows, although labels and controls can vary by release.
7. Assign filaments
Assign each part to a filament or extruder slot. STL files do not carry a reliable filament-color assignment, so verify the mapping manually. A red part in the slicer preview is only useful if the printer’s assigned slot actually contains the intended red filament.
The physical method matters:
- An automatic material system can swap filaments according to the sliced file.
- A multi-tool or multi-extruder printer can use separate tools.
- A single-extruder printer can use manual changes at the required layers.
- Large, simple regions can be printed separately and assembled as inserts.
“Multicolor” describes the finished result, not necessarily simultaneous extrusion.
8. Inspect the sliced preview
Before printing, confirm that:
- Every intended color region appears.
- No part is floating above the base.
- Thin lines generate walls or infill.
- The first layer contains the intended base geometry.
- There are no unexpected gaps, holes, or full-height overlaps.
- The layer preview retains shallow details.
- The filament assignments match the loaded spools.
Print a small test or reduced version first. A preview can reveal geometry problems, but it cannot fully predict adhesion, warping, or how a particular color contrast will look in the finished plastic.
Making a solid colored base
svg2solid documents a special technique for producing a solid colored base. Select the color that bounds the object, duplicate it, and use Path → Break Apart. Delete the paths inside the bounding path, assign the resulting base a new color, and set its depth to a negative number.
That negative value is a svg2solid-specific geometry-generation instruction—not a general slicer command and not a feature that every SVG-to-STL converter supports. If the result is inverted, missing, or positioned unexpectedly, recreate the model with a positive base and raised parts, then inspect the generated STL in the slicer.

Layer height, detail, and Arachne
Fine artwork must satisfy ordinary FDM limits. A detail can fail because it is too narrow for the nozzle, too shallow for the selected layer height, or too small for the slicer’s wall-generation rules.

svg2solid recommends Arachne slicing to help preserve detail. Arachne varies perimeter width to represent some narrow features more effectively, but availability and menu placement depend on the slicer and version. It cannot rescue geometry that is fundamentally below the printer’s practical line-width limit.
If a detail vanishes, enlarge it, make it thicker, increase its extrusion depth, choose a suitable profile, or use a smaller nozzle where practical. Always verify the sliced preview.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Face-down printing: useful, but optional
For a flat sign, printing the design face-down on a textured build plate can transfer the plate’s texture to the visible surface. This is a finishing choice, not part of the svg2solid conversion process.
Face-down printing makes first-layer quality especially important. A dirty or poorly calibrated plate can spoil the artwork, and a large flat sign may warp or be difficult to remove. Mirror the design if its orientation matters, and remember that the plate texture will become part of the front surface.
svg2solid versus other workflows
| Workflow | Best reason to use it | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| svg2solid | Explicit color-separated STL geometry and depth control | Requires SVG cleanup and manual part/filament assignment |
| Direct SVG import | Fewer conversion steps when your slicer supports the file reliably | Depth, overlap, and compatibility behavior can vary |
| CAD | Precise dimensions, mounting features, tolerances, and controlled recesses | Slower and more complex |
| Separate parts or inserts | Large simple color regions and reduced purge waste | Requires assembly and may show seams |
| Slicer painting | Adding color to an existing 3D model | Less convenient when exact SVG boundaries should become physical parts |
Bambu Studio advertises SVG and multi-material capabilities, but its issue tracker includes reports of SVG files failing in particular versions or environments. Treat direct SVG import as version- and file-dependent rather than guaranteed. If the slicer rejects the file, path conversion and svg2solid provide a practical STL intermediary.
PrusaSlicer offers a free, open-source multi-part workflow; check the official PrusaSlicer page for the current release for your operating system. Bambu Studio’s repository documents its supported platforms and multi-material software context.
Troubleshooting common failures
Missing colors or unexpected holes
Overlapping filled paths are the likely cause. Subtract foreground shapes from covered background regions, then regenerate the STLs.
Strokes disappear
Convert strokes to paths. A visual line is not necessarily a closed printable region.

Text is missing or changed
Convert live text to paths, then inspect narrow stems and counters. This removes dependence on the font installed on another computer.
Tiny details vanish
Increase the detail’s width or depth, enlarge the artwork, or use a more suitable nozzle and slicing profile. Confirm the result in layer preview.
Parts are misaligned
Import the STLs as parts of one object rather than separate objects. If necessary, use the slicer’s assemble or merge command and verify alignment in the 3D view.

Adjacent regions may only touch mathematically, or wall generation may leave a gap. Use a deliberate, small overlap where appropriate, increase line width, or design an inlay tolerance. The right offset depends on the printer and nozzle; there is no universal value.
The physical colors are wrong
Check the printer’s AMS, MMU, toolhead, or manual-filament mapping immediately before starting the print. The slicer preview can be correct while the loaded slots are not.
A large sign warps
Reduce the footprint, add a brim, improve bed preparation, use suitable temperature and enclosure settings, or split the design into smaller sections.
When should you use svg2solid?
Choose it when your artwork is already an SVG, uses discrete flat colors, and needs explicit per-region depth. It is particularly attractive when you want ordinary STL files without learning a complete CAD package.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use direct slicer SVG import when your slicer handles the specific file reliably and you want fewer intermediate files. Use CAD when the print must fit another object or needs holes, chamfers, curved surfaces, tolerances, or mechanically robust depth transitions. Use separate inserts when purge waste matters more than a one-piece print.
