The Sweet Valentine project is a Perler fuse-bead design made to go inside a Valentine card. Download the official Sweet Valentine pattern, place the beads on a large square pegboard, fuse both sides with ironing paper, and assemble the finished pieces with a photo, glue, and ribbon. The pattern uses nine named colors and 1,090 beads in total.
Perler describes the project this way: “Create these colorful designs from Perler Beads and include them inside a card for your Sweet Valentine!” The instructions below keep the official sequence intact while explaining how to organize the palette, fuse the design evenly, and finish the heart-frame version cleanly.

What you are making
This is not a paper-card template by itself. The featured artwork is built from heat-fused beads, then used as an insert or embellishment inside a Valentine card. The project includes a heart frame that can hold a photograph, a background piece, and an “I Love You” design that can receive its own ribbon bow.
Because the pattern is assembled on a large square pegboard, you can work from the downloadable image instead of trying to copy a finished sample by eye. Keep the pattern visible under a clear pegboard if your board allows it; that gives you a fixed reference while you place each bead.

Materials and exact bead palette
Gather the following before you begin:
- Perler fuse beads in the nine colors listed below
- One large square pegboard
- Ironing paper
- A household iron
- A photo for the heart frame
- Craft glue
- Ribbon for the bows
The quantities are the amounts specified by the project pattern, not a guarantee that every color is currently in stock. Perler notes that inventory changes over time and suggests substituting another product when a listed color or style is unavailable.

That is 1,090 beads altogether. Sorting each color into a separate small container before you start makes it easier to count what remains and reduces the chance of pulling a similar pink or purple by mistake. Keep a few extra beads nearby if you have them, but use the table as the pattern’s target palette and count.

- Open the official project page. Use the downloadable Sweet Valentine pattern from Perler’s project page. Save or print it at a size that keeps every bead position legible.
- Choose a stable work surface. Set the large square pegboard on a flat table where it will not be bumped while you place beads. If the pegboard is clear, slide the pattern underneath it and align the design with the board.
- Sort the palette. Arrange Light Pink, Bubblegum, Magenta, Red, Pastel Lavender, Plum, Purple, Black, and White separately. Check the pattern’s color key before placing any bead.
- Decide which design you will finish first. If you are making the heart frame, reserve the photo and ribbon for the assembly stage. If you are making the “I Love You” piece, keep its ribbon ready for the final decoration.
Do not put the iron on the craft table yet. The bead arrangement is easiest to correct while the board is cool and still flat.
Build the bead design
1. Place every bead according to the pattern
Follow the downloaded pattern row by row or section by section. Place each bead upright on its peg, checking the outline and interior colors as you go. Work slowly around curves in the heart and around any lettering; one misplaced bead can change the shape of a border or make a letter difficult to read.

Before heating, compare the entire board with the pattern. Check the outer edge first, then the major red and pink areas, then the darker outline colors and the white spaces. This is the last point at which you can move a bead without reheating the design.
2. Fuse the first side
An adult should handle the iron. Put the pegboard on a flat, heat-safe surface, set a household iron to medium, and cover the beads with ironing paper. Move the iron in a circular motion rather than holding it in one spot.
Perler says the beads generally need about 10–20 seconds of heat per side to fuse evenly. Treat that as a working range, not an automatic timer: lift the paper occasionally to inspect the bead connections, and continue heating when the design still has loose or visibly unfused areas. When the first side is fused, let the piece cool before handling it.
3. Fuse the reverse side
Once the design is cool, remove the ironing paper and lift the fused piece from the pegboard. Flip it so the unfused side faces up, then return it to the board or another suitable flat, heat-safe surface. Cover it with ironing paper and fuse the reverse side using the same medium setting and circular motion.

Allow the reverse side to cool completely before peeling away the ironing paper. Fusing both sides gives the piece a more secure bond and helps it hold its shape when you move it into the card. Perler identifies both the pegboards and the ironing paper as reusable, so keep them flat and clean for the next project.
Assemble the heart-frame version
Fit the photo before gluing
Use the finished heart frame as a guide and cut the photo so it fits the opening on the front. Test the fit while the pieces are dry. The image should sit behind the opening without covering the bead border; trimming small amounts gradually is safer than cutting away too much at once.

Attach the photo to the frame
Apply craft glue to the back of the heart frame, then place the trimmed photo against it so the picture shows through the front opening. Press gently and keep the frame level while the glue sets according to the glue’s own directions. Avoid flooding the bead surface with adhesive, because excess glue can squeeze into the opening or remain visible around the photo.
Join the frame to the background piece
After the photo is secured, align the frame front with the separate background piece. Glue the frame front to that background, matching the edges before pressing the pieces together. Check the alignment from the front while the glue is still workable; a slight shift is easier to correct immediately than after it has set.

Add the bow
Tie the ribbon into a bow and glue it in place on the heart-frame assembly. The same finishing idea applies to the “I Love You” design: Perler directs you to add a ribbon bow to that piece as well. Position each bow where it balances the design without covering the lettering, the photo opening, or the most important color details.
Using substitutions when a color is unavailable
The nine names and counts above describe the project’s specified palette. They do not mean those exact colors will always be available in stores. Perler’s Valentine project information says inventory changes and recommends substituting another product when a listed color or style cannot be found.

Record the replacement beside your printed pattern so you know which color you used if you make a second card. The pattern itself remains the authority for bead placement and quantity.

A bead is in the wrong position
Correct misplaced beads before ironing. Compare the outer contour first, then inspect the lettering and the interior color blocks. If you discover an error after fusing, let the piece cool completely before attempting any adjustment; do not pull at warm beads.

The design has loose beads after heating
Re-cover the affected area with ironing paper and apply additional heat in a circular motion on the medium setting. Lift the paper occasionally to check the bond, following Perler’s instruction to add heating time when required. Work in small areas so you do not overheat a section that is already fused.
The two sides look uneven
Make sure the design was cooled before it was flipped and that the reverse side received its own pass under ironing paper. The second side should be fused after the first side has cooled, not while the piece is still soft.

The photo does not sit correctly
Remove only enough material from the photo to fit the opening. Test the trimmed photo behind the frame before applying glue, and align the frame with its background while the adhesive is still movable.
The bow hides part of the design
Untie or reposition the ribbon before gluing. On the heart frame, keep the photo opening clear; on the “I Love You” piece, keep the lettering readable.
A practical production order for one or more cards
- Download and print the pattern once, then place it under the clear pegboard.
- Sort the nine colors and count the beads needed for the design you are making.
- Build the complete bead arrangement before turning on the iron.
- Fuse the first side, cool it, flip it, and fuse the reverse side.
- While the finished beadwork cools, prepare the photo and ribbon for the heart frame or the bow for the “I Love You” design.
- Glue the photo to the heart frame, attach the frame to its background, and add the bow.
- Place the completed design inside the Valentine card once the glued parts are secure.
This order separates heat work from assembly work: the iron is used only while an adult is present, and the photo and ribbon are handled after the bead pieces are cool and stable.
Final checklist before the card is finished
- The design matches the downloadable pattern.
- All required colors were placed in their correct positions, including the dark outline and lettering.
- Both sides were fused under ironing paper and inspected for loose beads.
- The heart-frame photo is trimmed to the opening and glued to the back.
- The frame front is aligned and glued to the background piece.
- The ribbon bow is attached without covering the image or lettering.
- The finished bead design is cool and the glued assembly is secure before it goes inside the card.
With those checks complete, the Sweet Valentine project is ready to serve its intended purpose: a colorful, personalized fuse-bead insert made for someone special.
