Confirm whether the stated durability applies to the exact colour, finish, substrate and number of coats being proposed.

High humidity and sudden rain can extend drying times and interfere with adhesion if a surface is coated while damp. The specification should state moisture checks, minimum and maximum application temperatures, recoat windows and the protection required if rain is forecast. A water-based product may be appropriate in a given system, but “water-based” alone does not establish suitability for every tropical exposure.

Coastal air and deposited salts
Where a house is near the coast or exposed to wind-driven salt, deposits can remain on walls, metalwork and joinery. Preparation should include removal of salts and other contaminants, followed by the primer and topcoat sequence required for that substrate. Ask the contractor to document how contaminated or corroded areas will be treated rather than assuming a new topcoat will lock the problem away.
Movement, moisture and biological growth
Masonry, fibre-cement sheets, timber and metal move differently as they heat, cool or take up moisture. Joints, cracks, fasteners and sealants need a compatible treatment before painting. Before choosing a finish, create a surface schedule. Record every material, its condition, exposure and the preparation required. A single house may need several systems.

Rendered masonry and concrete
Check for curing, powdering, cracks, salts, dampness and previous coatings. Remove loose material, clean the surface and allow it to dry. Fill or repair defects with a compatible material, then use the sealer or primer specified for the masonry condition. Do not bridge active movement cracks with ordinary paint; resolve the movement with an appropriate joint or repair detail before coating.
Fibre-cement and other sheet products
Confirm that sheets are sound, dry and free of construction dust. Treat cut edges, joints and fasteners as the sheet manufacturer requires. A compatible sealer can reduce uneven absorption, but the product and number of coats should come from current technical documentation rather than a generic “one primer fits all” assumption.
Timber and joinery
Identify the timber species, moisture condition, end grain, knots, resinous areas and any existing finish. Remove failing coatings, sand as specified and prime exposed areas with a system intended for the timber and the chosen topcoat. Pay special attention to end grain, edges, sills and horizontal surfaces where water can remain.
Galvanised or ferrous metal
Determine whether the metal is new, weathered, chalky or corroded. Previously painted surfaces
Test adhesion and identify the existing coating before overpainting. Scrape and feather loose edges, clean contamination, dull glossy areas where required and spot-prime repairs. If the old coating is incompatible, badly degraded or unknown, complete removal or an isolating system may be necessary. Document test patches before committing to the whole elevation.
A practical Darwin coating workflow
- Inspect and map the house. Mark walls, soffits, trims, doors, roofs, metalwork and repaired areas. Note sun, shade, rain exposure, splash zones and any coastal influence.
- Confirm the substrate and condition. Measure or otherwise verify dryness where the product instructions require it. Record cracks, efflorescence, mould, corrosion, chalking and failed sealant.
- Choose the complete system. Obtain the current technical data sheet for the primer or sealer, filler, texture product and topcoat. Check that every layer is approved for the substrate and exposure.
- Prepare and clean. Remove loose paint and contaminants, treat biological growth, repair defects and allow surfaces to dry. Keep a written record of products and dilution, if dilution is permitted.
- Apply a test area. Use the proposed colour, sheen and application method on representative surfaces. Inspect coverage, colour, adhesion and texture after the stated drying and recoat periods.
- Paint within the stated conditions. Follow the label for temperature, humidity, weather, wet-film or dry-film requirements, tools, thinning and recoat time. Stop if rain, condensation or surface heating falls outside those limits.
- Inspect each coat. Look for pinholes, misses, runs, lap marks, flashing and poor edge coverage before applying the next coat. Correct defects using the specified preparation, not by simply adding extra paint.
- Record the handover. Keep batch numbers, colours, sheen, preparation steps, application dates, weather notes and leftover product. Give the owner the maintenance and touch-up instructions.
How to compare competing systems without overclaiming
If a designer or contractor presents several Taubmans options, compare them on the same basis. A meaningful schedule should include:
- interior or exterior designation and the exact product version;
- approved substrates and required primer or sealer;
- surface-preparation standard, including treatment of salts, mould, corrosion and existing coatings;
- number of coats, spreading rate and application method;
- recoat and cure conditions for the site’s humidity and weather;
- finish and colour limitations, especially for strong or dark colours;
- cleaning, touch-up and expected inspection requirements; and
- warranty wording, exclusions and the maintenance actions needed to keep it valid.
Do not rank products by a generic durability adjective. If a value, test result or warranty period is not stated in the current technical documentation for the proposed system, mark it as “not stated” and ask for clarification.
Colour selection that survives the decision process
Start with the building’s orientation, roof and paving colours, surrounding vegetation and the amount of direct sun. View large samples outdoors at different times rather than relying on a small screen swatch. Confirm the final colour code from the current Taubmans fan deck or mixing system, and record the base and finish.

The historical report of 1,505 Colour Galaxy shades can explain why older project coverage may refer to a broad palette, but it does not establish today’s availability. - What documentation will be handed over, including batch numbers and touch-up instructions?
- What does the warranty cover, and which cleaning or inspection actions are required?
Until the original project specification is available, the responsible conclusion is limited: Sunproof is a historically documented example of a Taubmans water-based acrylic exterior house paint, while Endure and Tradex references concern separate interior product coverage.
