Nano Banana is Google’s name for image generation and editing in Gemini—not a standalone app. You can create an image from a prompt, edit an image Gemini made, or upload images and describe the result you want in ordinary language.

Google’s current Gemini Apps Help page describes three options: Nano Banana 2 Lite, Nano Banana 2, and Nano Banana Pro. Their availability and capabilities depend on your account, settings, and Google’s current rollout.

Why is it called Nano Banana?

“Nano Banana” began as the name associated with Google’s Gemini image-editing model. On August 26, 2025, Google announced it as an image-editing upgrade integrated into the Gemini app. The name now refers to a family of image-generation and editing options in Gemini rather than one permanent model.

Google describes the current options as follows. These are Google’s product descriptions, not independent benchmark results:

Model Google’s stated use Key distinction
Nano Banana 2 Lite Quick images and basic ideas Selected with Flash-Lite; not designed for multiple reference images or multiple edits.
Nano Banana 2 General image creation and editing Selected with Flash or Pro; supports multiple reference images and is described as balancing speed and quality.
Nano Banana Pro Redo an image when additional detail is needed Available with a Google AI Plan when Gemini is set to Pro; daily quotas may limit use.

Check Google’s Gemini Apps Help page for current names, instructions, and availability, since these can change.

What can Nano Banana do?

In Gemini, you can generate images, edit an image Gemini created, upload an image and ask for changes, or provide several images as references for a new composition. Google lists local edits, character consistency, instruction following, and improved text rendering among Nano Banana 2’s features.

Generate an image from a description

Describe the subject, action, background or setting, and desired style. For a painter, that might mean asking for a loose watercolor landscape, a plein-air study, or a thickly impastoed oil-painting effect. Treat the result as a starting point, not a guaranteed faithful rendering of a particular medium.

Edit an image

Ask Gemini to change an image in words—for example, to alter a background or make a local edit. Google’s launch examples included changing outfits or locations, blending photos, continuing edits over multiple turns, and applying one image’s style to an object in another.

For more controlled results, say what should change and what should remain. Inspect the output: a generative edit can alter details beyond the requested area.

Combine reference images

Nano Banana 2 can use multiple uploaded images as references. Explain the role of each image clearly, such as which one should guide the subject, clothing, or background. The model may still interpret those references rather than reproduce them exactly.

Render text in an image

Google describes Nano Banana 2 as having improved text rendering. It may help with concepts for signs, posters, or labels, but check every word and character before using the result. For text that must be exact, add or correct the lettering in a conventional design tool.

How to use Nano Banana in Gemini

The workflow is prompt-led; exact controls can vary by account, device, and rollout. In general:

  1. Open Gemini and start an image request, or open an image you want to edit.
  2. Upload an image or select reference images if your task needs them.
  3. Describe the image you want or the specific change you want made.
  4. Submit the prompt and review the result.
  5. Give a follow-up instruction if you want to refine it.

Google recommends describing the subject, action, background or setting, and desired style. For a narrower edit, identify what to change and what to preserve. If successive edits move away from the result you want, try again from the original image.

Which model should you choose?

Choose based on the task and the options available to your account. Lite is positioned for quick, basic ideas; Nano Banana 2 is the general image-creation and editing choice; Pro is intended for users who need additional detail and creative control and have an eligible Google AI Plan. These distinctions reflect Google’s stated positioning, not independent quality testing.

Google’s Help page says the selection is made through Gemini’s model options: Nano Banana 2 Lite is associated with Flash-Lite, Nano Banana 2 with Flash or Pro, and Nano Banana Pro with Pro. Names and access may change, so check the current interface and help documentation.

Access, age, and availability

Not every feature is available to every user. Google says personal-account users must be at least 18 to generate and edit images, while image generation is available from age 13 or the applicable age in the user’s country. Availability also depends on supported countries and languages, and work or school accounts may have additional restrictions.

Google Photos personalization is a separate, limited workflow. Google’s current Help page says it is for users 18 and over in the United States with a personal Google Account, and it is unavailable in some US regions. Check the Help page for current eligibility and connected-app requirements.

Privacy, copyright, and generated images

Think carefully before uploading private or sensitive images, and make sure you have permission to use images of other people or copyrighted material. Google advises users to follow its terms and prohibited-use policy and to use discretion before relying on or publishing generated results.

At launch in August 2025, Google said Gemini images included a visible watermark and an invisible SynthID digital watermark. That is a dated launch statement, not confirmation of every current product’s watermark behavior. Check Google’s current documentation before relying on a particular provenance or watermark feature.

No. It is Google’s name for image generation and editing capabilities available in Gemini.

Can Nano Banana edit photos I upload?

Yes. Google’s Gemini Apps Help page describes uploading an image and asking for changes, as well as using multiple uploaded images as references for a new image. Available options may depend on your account and location.

Do I need a paid Google AI Plan?

Google says Nano Banana Pro is available with a Google AI Plan when Gemini is set to Pro. Other image features and limits depend on the account, location, and current product settings; check Google’s Help page for current details.

Can I use Nano Banana for an exact logo or important text?

Use caution. Google describes improved text rendering for Nano Banana 2, but generated text and visual details still need review. For exact lettering, logos, or other publication-critical work, verify and finish the image with appropriate tools.
