Unglazed terra-cotta flower pots can do much more than hold plants. With the right pot, saucer and hardware, you can make a hanging bird feeder, a recirculating fountain, a rain chain or a decorative candle arrangement; a smoker, grill or pizza oven is possible only as a carefully planned construction project. The five concepts below are adapted from Lori Lovely’s March 6, 2025 guide for Bob Vila, with the fire and moisture limits made explicit so you know which projects are practical and which require professional-level planning.
Choose the right project before drilling a pot
Start with unglazed terra-cotta flower pots unless a project specifically calls for another form. Unglazed clay is porous: it absorbs water and loses it readily. The University of Maryland Extension explains that terra-cotta dries quickly because moisture moves through the pot, while Iowa State University Extension notes that herbs grown in clay containers may need more frequent watering. Those characteristics are useful for plant health but matter when a pot will hold water, hang from a wire or sit near heat.

| Project | Main components | Opening or hardware requirement | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bird feeder | One pot and two saucers; seed | Drainage openings, 1/8-inch saucer holes, vinyl-coated wire rope, ferrules and stops | No load rating or bird-species field test is stated by the Bob Vila source. |
| Tiered fountain | Pots, saucers and a submersible pump | Hole for the pump cord; silicone sealant | Pump capacity and outdoor electrical protection are not stated by the Bob Vila source. |
| Rain chain | Small pots and saucers | Hooks or copper tubing through drainage holes | It slows and directs water; it does not replace a drainage assessment. |
| Candle-pot arrangement | Nesting pots, bolts, bricks and a candle | Airflow around a suspended pot structure | It cannot increase a candle’s total heat output and presents fire and burn hazards. |
| Outdoor cooker | Terra-cotta body plus a purpose-designed smoker, grill or pizza-oven system | Advance structural, heat and ventilation planning | The source provides no complete tested build or food-safety specifications. |
1. Make a terra-cotta bird feeder
A pot-and-saucer feeder uses the pot as a seed reservoir and the lower saucer as a perch or catch tray. An orchid pot with openings is the convenient option because its side openings can dispense seed. A standard pot can work, but you must create its dispensing holes.

What you need
- One terra-cotta pot, either an orchid pot with openings or a standard pot
- Two terra-cotta saucers
- A drill with a 1/2-inch bit and a 1/8-inch bit
- Vinyl-coated wire rope, plus ferrules and stops for securing it
- Birdseed and a hanging point rated for the assembled load
Build sequence
- For a standard pot, mark three evenly spaced points about 1 inch above the bottom edge. Drill three 1/2-inch holes for seed to exit. An orchid pot can skip this drilling if its factory openings are suitable.
- Drill a 1/8-inch hole through the center of each saucer. Work slowly and support the clay so the thin saucer does not chip.
- Thread the vinyl-coated wire rope through the saucers and pot in the arrangement that lets one saucer catch seed below the dispensing openings. Use ferrules and stops to lock the rope rather than relying on a simple knot.
- Fill the pot with a dry seed blend, hang it where the support is secure, and check that the saucers remain level before adding more seed.
The dimensions and wire-rope hardware come from the Bob Vila design. That description does not establish a safe load rating, a maximum feeder size or suitability for any particular bird species, so treat the first fill as a stability check rather than proof that the design has been field-tested. Replace a pot or saucer at the first sign of a spreading crack, and keep seed dry so it does not cake inside the openings.
2. Build a small, tiered terra-cotta fountain
A fountain turns several pots and saucers into a recirculating water feature. The basic arrangement hides a submersible pump in the lower pot, then uses inverted pots and saucers to make tiers over which water can spill.

They are specifically intended for growing succulents, cactus and herbs. Plants and soil are not included in our 4pcs plant pots set
- Drainage Hole & Saucer: A small hole on the bottom of each flower pot enables water to drain and ventilate the soil. This helps avoid root rot, which may be caused by overwatering. The saucer serves to collect any extra water and maintain a clean environment around it
- Ideal for Indoor & Outdoor Usage: The cute clay pots for plants are perfect for plants nursing, ornament for balcony or room, wedding, baby shower, and other party decoration, crafts creation and more. Suitable for school projects of teaching children about growing plants
Parts and preparation
- A large base pot that can contain the pump and a water reservoir
- Smaller pots and saucers for the upper tiers
- A submersible pump, tubing as required by that pump and silicone sealant
- A drill suitable for the base pot and a stable, level outdoor location
Assembly
- Plan the cord route before filling the base pot. Drill an opening through the base pot for the pump cord, keeping the hole as high as practical while still allowing the pot to sit level.
- Set the submersible pump inside the base reservoir and route its cord through the opening. Seal the opening with silicone so water does not escape around the cable.
- Place inverted smaller pots and saucers over or around the pump to conceal and protect it. Arrange the pieces so water can move from one tier to the next without tipping the stack.
- Add water, switch on the pump and watch the first circulation cycle. Reposition a saucer if water splashes outside the reservoir, and replenish water as evaporation lowers the level.
The source specifies a submersible pump and a sealed cord opening but does not state a pump capacity, flow rate, fountain volume or outdoor electrical-protection method. Choose equipment according to the pump manufacturer’s instructions and local electrical requirements; do not assume that a generic indoor pump or an unprotected outlet is suitable outdoors. Silicone also needs to cure according to its label before the fountain is filled.
3. Turn small pots into a rain chain
A rain chain replaces a vertical downspout section with a visible path of cups. Small pots and saucers catch and guide water as it descends, making the flow easier to see and directing it toward a deliberate collection or planting area.

How to assemble it
- Select small pots and saucers with intact drainage holes. Keep the pieces similar enough in size that the chain hangs straight.
- Connect the pieces through their drainage holes with hooks or short lengths of copper tubing. Leave enough movement for water to pass from one piece to the next without binding.
- Attach the top of the chain to the downspout outlet or its support, then direct the bottom toward a rain barrel, planted bed, water feature or approved runoff area.
- Test the route with a hose or during the next rain. Adjust the bottom landing point if water is eroding soil or splashing against the building.
The rain-chain concept in Bob Vila’s guide is a way to slow and direct water, not a substitute for evaluating the property’s drainage. If the existing downspout already causes foundation seepage, saturated soil or standing water, address that drainage problem rather than assuming a decorative chain will solve it.
4. Understand the limits of a candle-pot heater
Nesting terra-cotta pots over a candle is often presented as a heater, but it does not create extra energy or heat an entire room. The pot changes where some heat is felt: Professor Joan Vaccaro of Griffith University told AAP FactCheck, “Over time, the pot heats up and begins to radiate infrared (thermal) energy from its surface.” She also explained that the pot does not increase the candle’s total heat output. AAP’s explanation is available in its January 5, 2024 fact check.

What the described arrangement involves
- Nest two or more terra-cotta pots and bolt them together so the assembly cannot shift.
- Place the candle on a noncombustible surface and suspend the pot assembly above it on bricks, leaving airflow around the flame.
- Keep the structure stable throughout use and monitor the pot, bolts and supports for movement.
Firefighters cited by AAP warned about fire risk. HGTV’s instructions also warn that the pot becomes hot enough to burn skin, advise against leaving it unattended and recommend stable, heat-protective support; see HGTV’s safety guidance. Never treat this arrangement as emergency heating, a room-heating substitute or a way to make a candle perform beyond its designed output. If a pot cracks, shifts or becomes too hot to approach safely, extinguish the candle and let every component cool before touching it.

Terra-cotta can be incorporated into an outdoor smoker, grill or pizza oven, but this is the one idea that should not be improvised from a spare flower pot. The source mentions these appliances as possibilities and explicitly treats them as projects requiring advance design and planning. It does not provide a complete tested build, heat-performance data or food-safety specifications.

Questions to resolve before construction
- What appliance are you building: a smoker, grill or pizza oven? Each needs a different heat path and airflow arrangement.
- How will the structure support high temperatures without tipping, cracking or transferring heat to combustible surfaces?
- Where will combustion gases and smoke go, and do local fire or building rules govern the installation?
- Which surfaces will contact food, and how will you clean and maintain them?
- How will you monitor temperature and control fuel without opening an unstable assembly?
Until those questions have documented answers, keep the pot cooker at the idea stage. Do not substitute it for a household stove, assume ordinary decorative clay is food-safe at cooking temperatures or copy an untested diagram. A purpose-built appliance or professionally reviewed design is the responsible next step.
Why terra-cotta’s moisture behavior matters around the house
Repurposing a pot does not change the clay’s basic behavior. The University of Maryland Extension’s guidance on potting and repotting indoor plants explains that terra-cotta absorbs and loses moisture readily. Iowa State University Extension’s container-herb guidance similarly notes that herbs in clay may require more frequent watering. That is an advantage when you want aerated roots and a pot that dries between waterings, but it means a fountain reservoir may need topping up and a rain-chain pot may weather faster than a glazed vessel.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse the moisture characteristic as a selection test: choose porous, unglazed clay for the feeder, fountain, rain chain and decorative projects when its appearance and drainage are useful; replace any piece that begins to crumble, leak or lose structural strength. For a heat project, inspect even more often because repeated heating and cooling can expose weaknesses that are not visible when the pot is used only as a planter.
Quick Recap
A practical decision guide
- Want the simplest weekend project? Start with the bird feeder, provided the hanging point and wire assembly are secure.
- Want moving water? Build the fountain only after selecting a pump and confirming a safe outdoor electrical arrangement.
- Need to manage downspout flow? Use the rain chain as a visible water director, then verify that the destination handles runoff.
- Considering the candle arrangement? Make it only as a closely supervised demonstration of heat transfer, never as a room heater.
- Dreaming of outdoor cooking? Treat the terra-cotta cooker as a design-and-compliance project, not a quick reuse of a flower pot.
