“Tết Dragon” refers to Tết Nguyên Đán, Vietnam’s Lunar New Year celebration in the Year of the Dragon—not a separate holiday. That zodiac year began on February 10, 2024, and was identified as the Wood Dragon year. Tết’s date changes from year to year.
What is Tết?
Tết Nguyên Đán is Vietnam’s Lunar New Year observance and the most significant holiday on the Vietnamese calendar, according to Vietnam Tourism. It is a time associated with family reunion, hope, and good luck. Although Tết and the Chinese Spring Festival are both Lunar New Year observances, Tết is rooted in Vietnam’s own cultural and national context; the names are not interchangeable.
For the 2024 celebration, “Dragon” identifies the zodiac year. It does not name a distinct Tết festival.

When was Tết in the Year of the Dragon?

What does the dragon mean in Vietnamese culture?
Dragon imagery has a place in Vietnamese cultural history and expression. One documented cultural motif is the idea of Vietnamese descent from a dragon and a fairy, expressed in the phrase “Con rồng cháu tiên.” The Vietnam Government Portal describes this lineage tradition, while the Vietnamese Embassy in the United States discusses the dragon in Vietnamese cultural imagery. These references describe cultural motifs, not a belief that every person or family interprets in precisely the same way.

How do people celebrate Tết?
Celebration combines family observances with public festivities, and customs differ among households and communities. Vietnam Tourism describes public scenes that may include flowers, dragon and lion dancers, gongs, drums, and bells. Such performances and decorations are part of the wider festive atmosphere; they do not mean every household celebrates identically.
New Year greetings are another part of the season. Vietnam Tourism gives “Chúc Mừng Năm Mới” as a Vietnamese greeting meaning “Happy New Year.” Children may receive New Year money in red envelopes, a custom noted by the Library of Congress; it should not be assumed to occur in every family.
