There is no single best Cricut for everyone: Maker 4 is the most versatile of these choices, Explore 5 is the mid-range full-size option, Joy 2 suits compact projects, and Venture is built for wide-format work. For painting, a Cricut can cut reusable stencils and masks; choose based on stencil size, material, workspace, and the tools you expect to use.
This is a buying guide, not a report of hands-on testing. The recommendations below draw on Cricut’s published specifications and Creative Bloq’s separately attributed reviews and category coverage. Model availability and included bundles can vary by market and change over time.
Which Cricut should you choose?
| Machine | Best fit | Published cutting capacity | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cricut Maker 4 | Mixed-material projects and specialty-tool flexibility | Creative Bloq describes compatibility with 300+ materials. Cricut lists full-size mats and matless Smart Material cuts up to 12 feet. | Broader capability can mean greater upfront and ongoing costs for tools, blades, and materials. |
| Cricut Explore 5 | General-purpose hobby projects without Maker-family specialty tools | Creative Bloq reports 100+ materials and six compatible tools. Cricut lists 12-by-12-inch and 12-by-24-inch mats; matless Smart Vinyl and Smart Iron-On cuts up to 12 feet. | Less flexible than the Maker family for specialty materials and tools. |
| Cricut Joy 2 | Small projects, limited storage, and portability | Cricut lists 4.5-by-6.5-inch and 4.5-by-12-inch mats, with matless Smart Material cuts up to 4 feet. | Its smaller work area is not suited to the same project widths as full-size machines. |
| Cricut Venture | Wide-format projects or larger batches | Cricut lists 24-by-12-inch and 24-by-28-inch mats, and matless Smart Material cuts up to 12 feet. | Its wide format is useful only if your projects and available workspace justify it; the cited sources do not establish it as a tested winner over the other models. |
Machine and material figures reflect the cited publishers’ descriptions and Cricut’s published specifications, not independent standardized testing. Cricut’s 12-foot and 4-foot figures refer to maximum matless Smart Material cut lengths in its comparison chart; they are not maximum dimensions for every material or project.

Best for versatility: Cricut Maker 4
Maker 4 is the strongest choice here when your projects may move beyond paper, vinyl, and iron-on. Creative Bloq’s 2026 guide names it its best overall Cricut and describes it as compatible with 300+ materials. That broad material figure does not mean every material works with every blade: specialty jobs can require specific tools, and Cricut identifies some Rotary Blade or Knife Blade tasks as Maker-compatible.
For painting, this flexibility can help when you want to cut stencils or masks from different suitable materials. Check the material-and-tool pairing before buying supplies; the machine’s headline material range is not a guarantee that any particular stencil sheet is compatible. Long Smart Material cuts may also call for a separately purchased Roll Holder, according to Creative Bloq. Extra blades and materials add to the cost.
Best mid-range full-size option: Cricut Explore 5
Explore 5 is the practical middle ground for users who want a full-size cutting area for common craft materials but do not need the Maker family’s specialty-tool range. Creative Bloq reports compatibility with 100+ materials and six tools. Cricut’s comparison lists 12-by-12-inch and 12-by-24-inch mats, as well as matless Smart Vinyl and Smart Iron-On cuts up to 12 feet.

For painting projects, the full-size mats provide more width for larger stencil layouts than Joy 2’s mats. Explore 5 is not interchangeable with a Maker for every specialty-material task, so confirm the blade and material requirements for a planned project before purchasing. Creative Bloq identifies Explore 5 as a mid-range choice; that editorial recommendation is theirs, not a test conducted for this article.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Best for compact projects: Cricut Joy 2
Joy 2 makes sense if you mainly cut small labels, decals, cards, or compact stencil elements and value a smaller machine. Cricut lists mats measuring 4.5 by 6.5 inches and 4.5 by 12 inches, plus matless Smart Material cuts up to 4 feet. Creative Bloq’s newer category guide identifies Joy 2 as a portable pick.
Those dimensions make Joy 2 a poor fit when you need a wide, single-piece stencil. You can plan a design as separate sections where the project allows, but alignment and seams may affect the finished painted edge. Do not confuse Joy 2 with Joy Xtra: their work areas and capabilities differ.

Best for wide-format work: Cricut Venture
Venture belongs on the shortlist when wide projects or repeated cuts matter more than compact storage. Cricut lists 24-by-12-inch and 24-by-28-inch mats and matless Smart Material cuts up to 12 feet. For a broad wall-stencil layout or a batch of larger signs, that format may be more relevant than the smaller machines.
The cited sources do not provide a fresh independent comparison test of Venture against Maker 4, Explore 5, or competing wide-format cutters. Treat it as a format-based option, not a proven overall winner. Measure your work surface and storage area before choosing a machine of this scale.
What matters when cutting stencils for painting?
Match the cutting area to the finished stencil
Decide whether the design needs to be one continuous piece or can be split into aligned sections. Compare the mat dimensions above with the actual stencil dimensions; a machine’s matless maximum length applies to specified Smart Materials, not every stencil substrate. A large mat does not by itself establish compatibility with a material.

Check the material and blade together
Cricut says its smart cutting machines handle common materials such as paper, cardstock, vinyl, and iron-on, while specialty materials are supported only on selected machines. Some materials require a Deep-Point Blade, and certain tasks are restricted to Maker tools such as the Rotary or Knife Blade. Confirm compatibility for the exact machine, blade, and material before purchasing or cutting.
Consider whether a removable mask or reusable stencil is right
For painting, a cut can serve as a stencil, a mask, or a pattern element depending on the material and how you apply it. The machine specifications do not establish how a particular material will perform with a particular paint, surface, or cleanup routine. Test the combination on a small sample and follow the material maker’s instructions.
Budget for the whole workflow
The machine is only one part of the setup. Mats, blades, suitable stencil material, and replacement supplies may contribute to the total cost. Creative Bloq specifically flags Maker 4’s premium pricing and the extra expense of blades and materials. Bundle contents and prices are not fixed by the specifications cited here, so compare the current box contents in your market rather than assuming a starter bundle includes the tools you need.

How Cricut software fits into the decision
Cricut machines use Design Space to prepare designs. Creative Bloq notes that designs can be imported from other software, while its guide characterizes Design Space as less advanced than dedicated design applications for complex original design work. If you already create artwork elsewhere, check that your preferred workflow can export a usable design before committing.
For a stencil, the design must also be prepared with the intended cut areas and any bridges needed to keep interior shapes connected. That is a design consideration rather than a machine ranking: a capable cutter cannot correct a stencil layout that does not hold together.
How to interpret speed claims
Cricut said in its 2025 product announcement that Explore 4 and Maker 4 cut cardstock and vinyl on a mat up to twice as fast as their respective previous models. This is a manufacturer claim about those 2025 machines, not an independent comparative measurement. It does not show that Explore 5 is twice as fast as Explore 4, nor does it establish cutting speed for every material or project.
Recommendations by project
- Choose Maker 4 if you expect to use varied materials and Maker-compatible specialty tools, and accept the added tool and supply costs.
- Choose Explore 5 if you want a full-size machine for general crafting and stencil work without needing the Maker family’s broader specialty-tool flexibility.
- Choose Joy 2 if your projects are small and portability or storage is more important than a wide cutting area.
- Consider Venture if you specifically need wide-format cutting or batch capacity and have room for a larger machine.
Before ordering, verify local availability, current bundle contents, and the exact machine–tool–material compatibility for your planned projects. Specifications and bundles may vary by market and can change.
