Rounded figures and fees affect comparisons
The July 2026 list rounds several older results, so its figures should not be mistaken for exact totals. Fee conventions are also not specified for every historical entry in that ranking. The Orchard with Cypresses record is explicitly $117,180,000 including buyer’s premium, while the November 2025 report on Parisian Novels says prices include fees. Comparing auction results is clearest when the fee basis is known; do not treat an unqualified rounded figure as directly equivalent to a separately reported all-in total.
The list is not an artistic ranking
A sale price records what a particular work achieved in a particular auction. It does not establish which painting is most important, representative, or admired, and the eight results do not by themselves describe the wider Van Gogh market. The ranking can change when another major painting comes to auction.
