A wave of AI images with soft, hand-painted animated-film qualities went viral on social media in March 2025, after OpenAI upgraded image generation in ChatGPT. The trend was often called “Ghibli-style,” but it was not an official Studio Ghibli filter or an endorsement by the studio. You can make an original image with a similar mood by describing its visual ingredients—such as delicate linework, layered watercolor textures, expressive faces and warm natural light—rather than asking a generator to copy a specific film, character or artist.

Here’s how to create and refine that look, which tools to consider, and what to check before you post or sell an image.

What was the AI Ghibli-style art trend?

In March 2025, people began sharing AI transformations of portraits, memes, family photographs and other images that resembled familiar hand-painted animated films. The surge followed a major improvement to ChatGPT’s image-generation feature. TechCrunch reported on the rapid viral wave, and The Washington Post covered the copyright questions it raised.

“Ghibli-style” became shorthand for a cluster of visual traits: inviting color, expressive characters, softly detailed settings, atmospheric light and a sense of nostalgia or wonder. It is not one uniform recipe—Studio Ghibli films have distinct visual approaches—and the phrase does not mean an image was made by, approved by or connected to Studio Ghibli. A viral post or screenshot claiming to be an official studio warning should not be treated as authentic without confirmation from an official source.

It helps to distinguish four things: an actual frame or character from a Studio Ghibli film; a human-made fan illustration; an AI-generated image prompted with broad animated-film qualities; and an image that reproduces recognizable protected material such as a character, logo or film composition. Those categories can raise different creative and rights questions.

How to make a hand-painted animated-film image in ChatGPT

ChatGPT is a convenient starting point if you want to transform an existing photo rather than build an image from a blank prompt. The interface and limits can change, so use the durable workflow below rather than relying on a particular button name.

  1. Open ChatGPT, sign in, and start a conversation.
  2. Upload a photo you own or have permission to edit. Choose a clear, well-lit image with one main subject and visible facial features.
  3. Describe what should remain recognizable—pose, expression, clothing, hairstyle and framing—and then describe the new visual treatment, setting, lighting and composition.
  4. Generate a first version, inspect it at full size, and request focused changes. A sequence of small edits is usually easier to control than asking the model to fix everything at once.
  5. Once the composition is right, request the crop you need, such as a vertical 4:5 social post. Download or share the result and label it as AI-generated or AI-assisted when transparency matters.

OpenAI’s current plan page lists image generation with limits on Free and expanded access on Plus; the listed Plus price is $20 per month. Availability, limits and plan details can change. OpenAI says ChatGPT Images 2.0 was introduced in April 2026 and is available across ChatGPT plans, with “images with thinking” on paid plans; check the release and limits information for current details. Do not assume every account has identical access or that a particular model produced an image unless the interface identifies it.

A prompt that describes the look without asking for a copy

Transform this uploaded photo into an original, whimsical, hand-painted animated-film illustration. Keep the person’s pose, approximate facial features, clothing and composition recognizable. Use delicate ink lines, layered watercolor-and-gouache textures, warm natural lighting, expressive but natural eyes, softly detailed foliage, atmospheric depth and a nostalgic fantasy-adventure mood. Do not add text, logos, copyrighted characters or extra people. Preserve the original identity and setting while creating an original visual treatment.

This is a starting point, not a guarantee. Results vary with the source image, prompt, model and available editing controls. If naming a specific studio or artist causes a refusal, or if you want a more original result, replace the name with concrete visual descriptions; do not try to disguise a request to reproduce protected material.

Build a stronger prompt in layers

A useful formula is action + subject preservation + visual qualities + environment + lighting + composition + exclusions. For example:

Reimagine this portrait as an original, hand-painted animated fantasy illustration. Preserve the person’s expression, hairstyle, jacket and three-quarter pose. Add a quiet countryside background, lush greenery and soft clouds. Use delicate linework, layered watercolor texture, natural skin tones, late-afternoon light and a vertical portrait composition. No text, logos, branded products, film characters or additional people.

For a landscape, specify the scene and the way it is painted: “Create an original countryside scene with layered hills, tiny distant houses, breezy grasses, fine ink details and soft atmospheric perspective.” For a pet photo, name the animal’s markings and pose, and ask to preserve them. For a wedding or family photo, describe the people and setting accurately, but get their permission before uploading or sharing a transformed portrait.

Refine the image one issue at a time

  1. Check identity and anatomy first. If a face drifts, ask to keep the facial structure, hairstyle and expression closer to the original. If hands look wrong, request a focused hand correction or a simpler pose.
  2. Adjust the setting next. Ask for a more detailed background while keeping the subject prominent, or simplify a cluttered scene.
  3. Correct color and light. If the result looks overly yellow, request natural skin tones and a restrained palette with varied greens, blues and neutrals. Describe the lighting separately from the colors; remove terms such as “golden” or “dreamy” if they push the image toward sepia.
  4. Prepare the crop. Ask for a specific orientation or framing, then inspect the edges for cut-off hands, faces or important details.
  5. Proof the final file. Look for extra fingers or people, accidental text, altered logos and unexpected objects. Add any needed typography later in a design application rather than relying on image generation for accurate text.

Targeted revision prompts include: “Keep the face and hairstyle closer to the original photo”; “Preserve the original clothing colors”; “Remove the extra person”; “Make the background more detailed but keep the subject prominent”; “Remove all text and brand logos”; and “Create a vertical 4:5 composition suitable for a social-media post.”

Choosing an image generator

The best tool depends on whether you value simplicity, editing control, an established design workflow or visual experimentation. Compare current features and terms on official pages before uploading sensitive images or using an output for client work.

Tool Good fit for Keep in mind
ChatGPT Casual users who want a straightforward way to transform an uploaded image and refine it in conversation. Free access is limited; plan limits and features can change. It may not provide the predictable per-image cost or production controls needed for high-volume work.
Adobe Firefly Adobe users, designers and marketers who want image generation alongside Adobe creative workflows. Check the current plans and Adobe’s copyright and commercial-use guidance. Adobe’s positioning is not a guarantee that every output is legally risk-free or copyrightable.
Midjourney People who want to explore stylized variations and are comfortable with a more specialized image-generation workflow. Check its official account and plans page for current pricing and privacy options. Style-reference features do not grant permission to copy a studio, artist, character or franchise.
Local or open-source workflows Technically confident users seeking more control over models, processing and custom workflows. Setup, hardware needs, model licences, safety and output consistency vary. These options are usually less convenient for a one-off portrait.

Before choosing, consider whether the tool can edit an existing image, how well it preserves faces and poses, whether its privacy controls fit your needs, what its commercial terms say, how predictable its limits or costs are, and whether you can correct details without rebuilding the image. For a casual first attempt, ChatGPT is the simplest route; Firefly fits naturally into Adobe workflows; Midjourney suits dedicated visual experimentation; local tools offer more control at the cost of setup.

Is Ghibli-style AI art legal or commercially safe?

There is no single answer that applies to every image, jurisdiction or use. The phrase “style cannot be copyrighted” is too broad to settle the issue. Copyright generally protects specific creative expression rather than an abstract style, but an image can still raise concerns if it copies protected characters, film stills, compositions, logos or other recognizable material. Trademark, privacy, publicity, contract and platform-policy issues may also matter. Questions about AI training, style imitation and output rights remain contested and vary by jurisdiction. The EU IP Helpdesk’s analysis outlines several of these unresolved issues.

Keep these separate questions in view:

  • Do you have rights to the input? Use your own photo or one you are authorized to modify. A generator does not give you permission to use someone else’s photograph.
  • Does the output include protected material? Avoid selling or presenting recognizable Studio Ghibli characters, film scenes, logos or copied artwork without appropriate rights. A broad visual mood is different from reproducing specific expressive elements, but the boundary can be fact-dependent.
  • What do the tool’s terms allow? Read the terms for the service and plan you use. A platform’s contractual permission to use an output does not settle whether copyright protects it under the law where you live or sell.
  • Can you claim copyright in the result? Do not call AI images “copyright-free” or assume you automatically own exclusive rights. Copyrightability can depend on jurisdiction and the human creative contribution, including substantial selection, arrangement, editing or compositing.
  • Could viewers think it is official? Do not imply that Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki or a distributor made or endorsed an image. For commercial work, check local law, the generator’s terms and any client requirements; keep records of source files, prompts and substantial edits.

OpenAI says it does not claim copyright over content generated through its API for the user or end user, but that contractual position is not a ruling on whether a particular image receives copyright protection. See OpenAI’s explanation and assess rights separately.

Hayao Miyazaki has previously criticized AI-generated animation. Widely circulated discussion of his views often refers to a 2016 documentary, not a verified direct statement responding to the March 2025 social-media trend. The Associated Press and the EU IP Helpdesk provide context; avoid attributing a new condemnation of the trend to him without a direct source.

Privacy, consent and responsible sharing

  • Ask permission before transforming and posting another person’s portrait. Be especially cautious with children’s images.
  • Do not upload confidential documents or photos containing addresses, licence plates, medical details, workplace information or private locations unless you understand the service’s current data controls and have authorization.
  • Do not use generated images to impersonate someone, fabricate evidence or mislead people about news or political events.
  • Label the result “AI-generated” or “AI-assisted” when viewers could otherwise mistake it for a photograph, official artwork or human-made painting.
  • For client work, agree in writing on whether AI may be used and whether disclosure is required.

OpenAI says images generated with ChatGPT, Codex and its API include C2PA metadata and SynthID signals, and describes a verification tool for supported provenance signals in its provenance guide. These signals have limits: metadata may be lost through screenshots, re-exports or social platforms; its absence does not prove a picture was made by a person; and provenance tools are not universal AI detectors. A clear caption is still useful even when metadata is present.

A painter’s approach to making the look your own

For a more distinctive result, think like an illustrator rather than treating the generator as a one-click filter. Decide what the image is about, choose a palette with intention, and separate the subject from the atmosphere. You might begin with a limited set of colors, identify the focal point, and ask for a background that supports—not competes with—the figure. Then revise the image as you would a painting: clarify the silhouette, simplify distracting shapes, adjust the light, and check that the composition reads at thumbnail size.

Use those choices to make the result personal: draw from your own setting, objects, memories or original character ideas rather than a recognizable scene from a film. If you want a more painterly finish, you can also refine the downloaded image manually in a drawing or photo-editing application. The AI result can be a starting point for your creative decisions, not a substitute for them.
