The Architecture Concept Book is an illustrated primer by architect James Tait that explores how to develop architectural ideas and strategies. The current refreshed Thames & Hudson edition, published on 19 September 2024, is organized into four sections: Assess, Analyse, Assemble and Augment. What is The Architecture Concept Book about?
Tait’s book treats architecture as a discipline shaped by the world around it. What changed in the 2024 edition?
Thames & Hudson says the refreshed edition adds an introduction to each section, 18 new pages and 5,000 additional words. Its listing gives the book as 296 pages with 579 illustrations. These are publisher-listed specifications for the 2024 edition.

How does the 2024 edition differ from the 2018 edition?
The editions have separate ISBNs and specifications, so check the ISBN when buying or borrowing a copy. The figures below come from the respective publisher listings; the 2018 edition’s illustration count should not be attributed to the 2024 book.

Who is the book for?
The book is suited to readers who want prompts and frameworks for thinking about architecture: people studying design, practicing professionals, or curious readers exploring the built environment. Its mix of social, contextual and formal concepts may also interest painters and other visual practitioners who want to consider how space, structure, scale and context shape the experience of a place. That is an adjacent use of the ideas, not a claim that the book is a painting guide.
