Tyler Street Art is the alias of an anonymous Mumbai-based artist whose stencil images turn city walls into sites of political and social commentary. The work has moved from street walls into protests, Instagram, news coverage and galleries—but the available reporting documents circulation and public response, not proof that a particular image changed a vote or policy.
Who is Tyler Street Art?
Tyler keeps their identity anonymous. Profiles describe an artist working in Mumbai, known for stencil-based public-wall images that combine cartooning, humour and social commentary. Tyler told The Indian Express, “I started painting walls as a form of social commentary.” In another line quoted by the paper, Tyler said, “Graffiti is not to achieve but to express.”
The origins of the practice are not consistently dated. Scroll.in and Amsterdam Street Art say it began in 2012, while Method Art Space describes Tyler as creating work since 2010. Those dates should be treated as conflicting accounts, not combined into a single definitive start year.
How does Tyler use street art as protest?
Tyler told Scroll.in, “Street art is nothing but protest art,” adding, “You can add some humour to it but primarily street art is meant to ask questions through art.” In this approach, a familiar image or joke can make a political subject legible in the everyday setting of a neighbourhood wall. The work does not need to offer a policy programme; its stated purpose is to provoke thought and express a position.

What political cartoons has Tyler painted on Mumbai’s walls?
Child labour and inequality
A Christmas mural reported by Scroll.in in 2018 recast the Santa Claus and reindeer story to address child labour. Its seasonal imagery offered a pointed contrast: a familiar festive scene could also draw attention to exploitation and inequality.

Election imagery in 2019
The Indian Express reported on Tyler’s “YOUR VOTE” tag campaign and an election-period image of two politicians in a tug of war over a map of India. Scroll.in noted that the election image received international editorial attention. The sources document its public and media circulation, not an effect on election results.
The Indian Express also describes a Bart Simpson image referencing the phrase “Jai Shri Ram.” Its account places the work within Tyler’s use of popular imagery to engage with political and religious life; that context should not be mistaken for a universally agreed reading of the image.

CAA/NRC, protest and policing
Scroll.in reported late-2019 works addressing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC), police brutality and protest. One Santa-themed image used the line “Merry CAA and a Happy NRC.” These descriptions reflect the subjects and political characterization reported by the publication.
What happened to the Walk of Shame works?
In 2020, The Art Newspaper reported on Tyler’s “Walk of Shame,” a crowdsourced project that named public figures whom Tyler said spread hate and false propaganda. The paper reported that members of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) defaced the works with black paint. Tyler told the publication, “People need to know the strength they have against the government when they are united.” The account also records reported complaints and the suspension of Tyler’s Instagram account; those events and claims are attributed to the publication and the people it interviewed.

The episode shows that political art on a public wall can become part of a wider contest over speech and visibility. It does not establish the legal status of every work or location, nor does it show that the project produced a particular political outcome.

A street image may be photographed, shared on Instagram, picked up by news outlets, painted over or otherwise altered. Scroll.in describes this circulation around Tyler’s political work. The medium matters: online images can travel beyond the street, while the physical wall remains exposed to local response and change.

The practice has also entered exhibition settings. Amsterdam Street Art recounts a 2015 collaborative wall in Mumbai with ASA artists IVES.one and Beazarility and Indian artist Jas, followed by Tyler’s participation in the 2016 “Street Art Evolution” exhibition in Amsterdam. The same 2021 profile describes exhibition work made on found objects. Method Art Space lists a Tyler collection across painting, works on paper, sculpture, prints, digital art and mixed media. A gallery listing establishes that work is represented in a collection page; it does not establish current availability for purchase.
What the record can—and cannot—show
Profiles and reporting establish a practice built around political expression, public walls and images that circulate through social media and the press. They also record disagreement and physical alteration of some work. They do not measure whether a mural changed public opinion, influenced a vote or brought about a policy change. That distinction matters: visibility is evidence that an image travelled, not evidence of its political effect.
Follower counts published in profiles are historical snapshots, not current audience figures. Scroll.in reported more than 24,000 Instagram followers in January 2020; Amsterdam Street Art cited more than 70,000 in 2021. Neither number should be treated as a present-day count or as a measure of political influence.
