You can sketch on a Chromebook with Google’s Canvas app, but the right setup depends on the exact device. Check whether it supports touch and an active stylus—and whether that stylus protocol matches—before buying a pen. Drawing apps and pen features vary by Chromebook and app.
Start with your Chromebook
Identify the exact Chromebook model before choosing a stylus or drawing app. A product family name alone is not enough to establish pen compatibility. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and Google’s Chromebook stylus guidance for the specific device.
Some Chromebooks support USI styluses, but not all touchscreen Chromebooks do. If your Chromebook already includes a compatible pen, you may not need to buy another one.

Choose a drawing setup

Choosing a stylus
Google says some Chromebooks are compatible with USI styluses. Check the exact Chromebook model before purchasing, and look for a pen explicitly compatible with its supported active-pen protocol. A stylus-shaped accessory is not necessarily an active pen for your device.
Google states that Bluetooth styluses cannot be used with Chromebooks and cautions that capacitive styluses may not work well. A capacitive stylus should not be treated as a guaranteed substitute for a compatible active pen.
Google’s ChromeOS-compatible stylus specification addresses USI 1.0 and 2.0 host support for compliant styluses. The specification does not replace checking whether your particular Chromebook supports USI.

- Draw with a compatible stylus.
If Canvas is unavailable or you want another tool, Google’s support guidance points users toward other stylus apps. The available features depend on the app and device.
Google’s 2022-era description of Cursive presents it primarily as a note-taking app that can also be used to sketch. Its installation and availability may have changed, so check your Chromebook rather than assuming it is preinstalled or currently available as a web app.

Drawing apps and pen features
Many Chromebooks support Android apps, but support varies by model. Chromium.org says that, unless otherwise specified, devices launched in or after 2019 support Android apps; older devices require model-specific checking. Check whether the app you want is available on your Chromebook.
Android apps receive stylus input as touchscreen events. Android Developers explains that pressure, tilt, and orientation data are available only when the device and stylus support them. Do not assume every app-device combination exposes the same pen features.
Using an external drawing tablet
An external drawing tablet may be an option if your Chromebook’s built-in input is not suitable, but verify support for the exact tablet, Chromebook, connection, and app before buying. Some Chromebooks may use USB or Bluetooth drawing tablets, but Android apps do not work with USB input. That limitation matters if your intended drawing app is an Android app.

Do not assume that a tablet working with another computer or operating system will work the same way with ChromeOS. Confirm compatibility with the tablet maker and test it with the app you intend to use.

- Find your model. Record the Chromebook’s complete model name or number.
- Check stylus support. Use the manufacturer’s specifications and Google’s guidance to verify whether the device supports a stylus protocol such as USI.
- Check the app. Confirm that the drawing app is available on your Chromebook, especially if it is an older model.
- Test the intended workflow. Open Canvas or your chosen app and try drawing with the actual stylus or tablet you plan to use.
- Test needed pen features. If pressure, tilt, or orientation matter to you, verify that the device, stylus, and app support them together.
- Verify external-tablet connections. Check support for the exact tablet and connection, and remember that Android apps do not work with USB input.
