Garden pottery can do two jobs at once: hold plants and shape the landscape as a sculptural object. A single vessel can anchor an entrance or terrace; a coordinated group can add rhythm along a path. The best choice balances that visual role with the plant’s needs, the pot’s drainage and material, and the weather where it will live.
Give the pot a clear role in the landscape
Before choosing a vessel, decide what it should do in the view. A distinctive pot can create a focal point at an entry, terrace, path junction, or garden room. Several related pots can establish a repeated accent and guide the eye. Containers can also introduce color, texture, and style into a planting scheme, as described by the University of Florida IFAS Extension.

Use scale, shape, and finish deliberately
Relate the pot’s size and visual weight to the surrounding space and the mature form of its planting. A restrained vessel can let foliage take the lead; a strongly shaped urn or glazed pot can act as the feature itself. Repeating a color or material can help a group feel unified, while varying forms can keep it from looking too uniform. These are design choices rather than guaranteed effects: the setting and the view determine what works.
Think about how the pot reads from the places people will see it. A tall vessel may suit a broad entrance or an open terrace, while a low, wide form may sit more naturally beside a path or among lower plants. Keep the composition in proportion to the surrounding architecture and planting rather than treating the pot as an isolated purchase. For planting-composition guidance, see Naples Botanical Garden’s container garden design guide.

Choose a vessel that suits its planting and location
Appearance is only one part of the decision. Container size, drainage, material, mobility, and exposure to sun, wind, and frost all affect suitability and care. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach discusses container size and drainage, while Illinois Extension highlights material and whether a container may need to be moved.
- Plant fit: Choose a vessel with enough room for the intended planting, and consider the plant’s mature form and the view you want to create.
- Exposure: Account for wind, direct sun, reflected heat, and freezing conditions where the pot will stand.
- Mobility: Decide whether you can leave the pot in place or will need to move it for seasonal changes or protection. Large, heavy vessels can be difficult to relocate.
- Runoff: On a patio or other hard surface, plan where drainage water will go and whether it needs to be caught.
Make drainage part of the design
A planting container needs a functioning drainage path. Check that the pot has a suitable drainage hole. If an ornamental outer vessel has no hole, an inner pot or liner arrangement can keep the planted container separate; make sure the inner pot can drain and that excess water can be emptied rather than left to collect. Iowa State Extension also describes ceramic-capable drill bits, but check the vessel’s construction and the maker’s guidance before attempting to drill it.

Do not add gravel or broken pottery to the bottom as a drainage fix. UBC Botanical Garden explains that a coarse layer can leave an elevated saturated zone and reduce the usable root and water volume. A porous growing medium throughout the container is preferable. On hard surfaces, keep the outlet clear; slightly raising the pot on shims or similar supports can help prevent water from being blocked beneath it.
A saucer or tray may be useful when runoff needs to be caught, particularly with porous ceramic. It should not obstruct the drainage outlet, and collected water should not be allowed to defeat the pot’s drainage. The Missouri Botanical Garden’s container visual guide discusses trays for porous containers.

Understand the care trade-offs of pottery
Terra-cotta is porous, so water evaporates through it faster than through plastic. The potting medium can therefore dry more quickly, requiring closer attention to watering. That characteristic may suit some situations, but it does not mean every plant benefits from faster drying. Chicago Botanic Garden’s container gardening guidance covers terra-cotta’s properties and container choice.
There is no universally best pottery material for every garden. Choose in light of the planting, how often you can check moisture, the site’s weather, and whether you can move or protect the vessel. A saucer can help manage runoff, but it is not a substitute for drainage or for checking the plant’s water needs.

Plan for seasonal change and winter weather
A pot can remain a stable feature while its planting changes. Chicago Botanic Garden describes rotating container plantings through the seasons and using branches and boughs in winter. This lets the vessel continue to anchor a composition even when the plants change.
In climates with freezing weather, moisture and freeze-thaw cycles can damage pottery; the risk depends on the product and local conditions. Follow the maker’s care guidance. Illinois Extension advises thoroughly drying and securely covering pottery left outdoors, or storing it upside down, to reduce exposure to moisture. Consider this care requirement when deciding where a vessel will live and whether it can be moved.
Quick Recap
A practical selection checklist
- Choose the visual role: Decide whether the pottery should be a focal object, a repeated accent, or a quieter support for the planting.
- Check proportion: Relate the vessel’s size, shape, and finish to its setting and to the mature form of the plants.
- Confirm drainage: Look for a suitable hole or plan a drainable inner-pot arrangement. Keep the outlet clear and do not use a gravel layer as a substitute.
- Match care to material: Allow for more frequent moisture checks with porous terra-cotta, which can dry faster than plastic.
- Assess the site: Consider wind, sun, reflected heat, hard surfaces, runoff, and whether the pot will need to move.
- Plan for the season: Decide how the planting will change and how the pottery will be protected from winter moisture and freezing conditions.
