You can start making digital art with a computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone you already own. Pick software that suits your device and the kind of image you want to make, then practise with a small project. A stylus or drawing tablet can make pen input easier, but neither is a universal requirement.
What do you need to start digital art?
Adobe’s guide to digital drawing identifies computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones as possible drawing devices. Start with the one you have and confirm that your chosen app supports it.
A mouse or finger may be less precise for fine details, so a stylus or drawing tablet is an option if you want pen input. Adobe presents these as potentially helpful, not necessary for every beginner. A scanner can bring paper sketches into a digital workflow, while backup storage can help protect your files; both are optional.
Raster or vector: which kind of art are you making?
Raster and vector describe two different ways images are built and edited. The right choice depends on the result you want and how you plan to revise it.

Why use layers?
Layers keep parts of an image separate so you can change one without repainting everything. For a simple illustration, put the rough sketch, clean lines, color, and background on separate layers. You can then hide or reorder a layer, adjust its opacity, or work on the color without disturbing the line art.

Krita’s layer documentation explains how layers stack and can be edited independently. Adobe’s Fresco tutorial demonstrates layer visibility, opacity, blend modes, and reordering. Learning these basic controls early makes revisions easier to manage.

Krita is a sensible place to begin if you want painting tools and documented support for editable project workflows. Fresco may suit you if you use a supported device and want pixel, live, and vector brushes or Adobe workflow options. Neither choice guarantees compatibility with every device configuration.
Make a small first project
A fan-art study, a simple logo, or a small concept-art sketch can give you a manageable way to practise. Adobe’s digital drawing guide suggests these kinds of beginner projects and recommends starting from a simple sketch.

- Choose one subject. Pick something you can draw simply, such as a mug, a leaf, or a character’s head.
- Make a rough sketch. Focus on the main shapes rather than small details.
- Separate your work. Keep the sketch, line art, color, and background on distinct layers where your app supports them.
- Revise one thing at a time. Adjust shapes, color, or placement on the relevant layer instead of starting over.
- Keep an editable copy and export a finished image. Save the project in the app’s editable format, then export a separate copy in the format you need to share. This is a practical workflow suggestion, not a prescribed app-specific sequence.
What to check if your tablet and app do not communicate
Pen input depends on communication between the drawing app, operating system, and tablet hardware. Krita’s drawing tablet manual documents driver and configuration issues, including Windows-specific cases; setup is not universal.
