Precut quilting fabrics save some measuring and cutting, and coordinated bundles make it easier to start with prints from the same collection. They work best when the bundle’s shape and quantity match the pattern; they are less useful when you need large, uninterrupted pieces or want to select every fabric yourself.
What precut fabric is—and what it can do for a project
Precut fabric is sold in pieces already cut to specified shapes and sizes, often grouped by fabric collection. Instead of preparing every piece from yardage, you can begin with cuts suited to patchwork. A coordinated bundle also puts several prints from one collection together, reducing the work of assembling a palette. That convenience does not guarantee every print will suit your design, and the available sources do not establish a universal amount of time saved.

Patterns and kits are made for common precut formats, including fat quarters, fat eighths, jelly rolls, layer cakes, charm packs, and mini charm packs. Choosing a pattern written for the bundle you own can reduce extra measuring and cutting; a pattern written for a different cut may require additional preparation or fabric.
Common precut formats
The dimensions below are those listed in the Fat Quarter Shop’s precut guide. Bundle names and dimensions can vary slightly by maker, so check the specific product listing and package label.

These terms describe common formats, not a guarantee that every manufacturer supplies the same dimensions or number of pieces. Read the listing before choosing a pattern or estimating coverage.
How to tell whether a bundle fits your pattern
- Match the cut. Check the pattern’s required shape and dimensions. A pattern written for 2.5-inch strips may not use a charm pack as purchased.
- Check the package contents. Confirm the number of pieces and how many of each print are included; these can differ between collections and products.
- Confirm the total fabric requirement. Compare the pattern’s required quantity with the bundle contents, and check whether you also need background fabric or other yardage. Sewing.org’s fabric guidance advises checking that the labelled contents are sufficient for the project.
When precuts are useful—and when they are not
- A precut can be a good fit when its size matches the pattern, you want to skip some preparation, or a coordinated selection of prints is useful for your design.
- Yardage may suit you better if the project needs large, uninterrupted pieces, you want to choose every print individually, or you already have suitable fabric.
The available sources do not quantify a general cost, time, or fabric-waste advantage for precuts. Treat them as a format and convenience choice, not as a guaranteed way to save money or fabric.
