How to create a painting reference in ChatGPT
- Open ChatGPT and ask for an image, or choose More → Images.
- Describe the subject, composition, lighting and intended use. For example: “Create a vertical oil-painting reference of a weathered red boat pulled onto a stony beach, viewed from a low angle, late-afternoon side light from the left, quiet grey-green sea, clear foreground shapes, no text.”
- Open the generated image in the conversation or under Images.
- Use the selection tool to mark an area, or describe the change in the conversation panel.
- Ask for a targeted revision, such as “Replace the cloudy sky with a pale clear sky, but keep the boat, rocks and direction of the shadows unchanged.”
- Use the aspect-ratio selector if you need another format.
Generated images are stored under Images; use Copy or Save to export them. Inspect the whole image after every edit.

On the web, open Create on midjourney.com, enter a prompt in the Imagine bar and submit it. You can rerun, upscale, vary or reuse a prompt. In Discord, the command remains:
/imagine prompt: a lone cypress on a windswept coastal cliff, simplified masses, warm sunset behind the tree, cool violet shadows, vertical composition
For a Discord region edit, generate an image, upscale it with a U# button, choose Vary (Region), select an area, optionally enable Remix Mode and submit. The web Editor and Discord workflow are not identical: Midjourney says its Web Editor functionality processes V8.1 images using V6.1. Pan, Zoom Out and Edit/Vary Region on HD images can produce SD results; upscale again if you need HD. Stealth Mode is limited to Pro and Mega. Gemini is useful when you already have an image and want to explore changes through dialogue. Nano Banana 2 and related Gemini image models support image-generation workflows, but availability varies by country, language, account and plan. Google AI subscriptions raise some limits, which can change with demand and capacity. (Google Gemini Apps image-generation help.)
- Go to gemini.google.com and enter a prompt.
- To edit, upload an image and describe the change. You can upload multiple images and ask for a new image based on them.
- To save a result, hover over it and select Download full size.
In Google Search AI Mode, the path is AI Mode → Image → Create Images. For Nano Banana Pro in AI Mode, choose Thinking with 3 Pro from the model dropdown, then select Image → Create Images Pro. Google lists daily AI Mode limits of up to 25 images without a Google AI plan, 50 with Google AI Plus, 100 with Google AI Pro and 1,000 with Google AI Ultra; these are subject to change. Ideogram: choose it when words are part of the picture
Ideogram 4.0 is a specialist for readable text, posters, packaging, signs and graphic compositions. It can help with a painted shopfront, vintage travel-poster reference or still life containing a product package. Its advantage is typography and layout, not a claim to be best at every image task.
Ideogram offers a free tier. Plus provides 1,000 priority credits per month at $15/month when billed annually; Pro provides 3,500 at $42/month billed annually; Team costs $20 per user per month billed annually. Free generations are public by default; paid plans provide private generation. Turbo, Default and Quality modes consume credits differently, and the former Basic plan is no longer available for new purchases. Adobe Firefly: best inside an Adobe production workflow
Firefly makes sense when your reference or artwork already moves through Photoshop, Illustrator or other Adobe tools. Its value is integration and controlled editing, rather than a general image leaderboard result.
- Open Firefly and select Image in the left panel.
- Select Generate image, enter a prompt and open the Model dropdown under General settings.
- Choose a model and aspect ratio, then select Generate.
The model selector includes Firefly Image 3, Firefly Image 4, Firefly Image 4 Ultra and Firefly Image 5, as well as partner models. To edit, choose Firefly homepage → Image → Edit image, upload an image, select a model, enter an instruction and generate. Controls and output options vary by model.
Adobe’s claims about training on licensed and public-domain content apply to its Firefly models, not automatically to partner models available in the same interface. Check the relevant model’s terms and rights considerations. A “You don’t have access to this feature” message generally means the selected premium model or feature is not included in your subscription. Vague prompts can produce attractive but unhelpful images. Specify the information you need to paint:

- Composition: viewpoint, crop, horizon and dominant shapes.
- Light: direction, hardness, time of day and color temperature.
- Value structure: broad value masses or a high-key treatment.
- Material: wet stone, worn wood, wool, glass, foliage or skin.
- Format: portrait, landscape or square, plus the intended crop.
- Exclusions: text, clutter or unwanted background elements.
A useful prompt might be: “Create a horizontal landscape reference for a gouache painting: three broad value groups, a small white cottage in the lower-right third, tall dark pines forming the left edge, low winter sun from the right, cool blue-violet shadows, muted ochre grass, clear overlapping planes, no people, no text, no decorative border.”
Make one change at a time. If you alter weather, architecture, camera position and palette simultaneously, it is harder to tell which instruction caused a regression.
What AI image generators still get wrong
Use generated imagery as reference material, not proof that a scene works in reality. Check hands, repeated objects, reflected light, cast-shadow direction, perspective, plant structure and contact between objects and surfaces. A convincing image can still break these relationships.
For painters, a practical workflow is:
- Generate several compositions.
- Choose one for its value pattern and silhouette, not just surface polish.
- Crop or edit distracting elements.
- Make a small grayscale or color thumbnail yourself.
- Verify lighting and perspective before committing to a large canvas.
- Use observation, photographs or physical studies for details the AI image cannot reliably establish.
Check rights and privacy before using outputs commercially. A subscription does not automatically make every image legally risk-free, especially when a platform offers third-party models or an image resembles a living artist, identifiable person, protected character or branded product.
