For most bathroom walls, choose a quality waterborne acrylic or latex interior paint whose label or technical sheet specifically says it is suitable for bathrooms or humid conditions. Satin and semi-gloss are practical, washable choices, but a bathroom-rated matte paint can work too. Good ventilation and sound surface preparation matter just as much: bathroom paint will not repair a leak, waterproof a shower, or prevent every instance of mold.
What to look for in bathroom paint
Start with the product’s intended use, not its sheen. Look for a waterborne acrylic or latex interior coating explicitly designed or recommended for bathrooms, kitchens and baths, or high-humidity rooms. Check the current label and technical data sheet for the surfaces it covers, preparation requirements, primer directions, application conditions, and drying or cure instructions.

Bathroom paint is not a universal formula, and manufacturers’ claims describe their own products rather than independent head-to-head performance. For example, Sherwin-Williams describes Duration Home as an acrylic latex interior paint with antimicrobial agents that inhibit mold and mildew on the paint surface, and markets it for moist environments. Sherwin-Williams Duration Home product information
Benjamin Moore’s Aura Bath & Spa is a waterborne paint marketed for high humidity and offered in matte; its product information describes mold- and mildew-resistant coating features. The brand’s Kitchen & Bath paint is available in satin, and its technical sheet says it resists mildew growth under humid conditions. Is satin or semi-gloss best?
Satin and semi-gloss are common bathroom choices because their smoother surfaces are generally easier to wipe than a typical flat wall finish. The tradeoff is appearance: higher sheen reflects more light and can make surface flaws more noticeable. Sherwin-Williams says traditional latex eggshell and semi-gloss can work in a bathroom when ventilation is good. Sherwin-Williams Interior Product Selection FAQ
Do not treat semi-gloss as mandatory. Choose the sheen offered by a paint specifically made for humid conditions, and weigh the desired look and cleanability against the wall’s condition. A dedicated bathroom matte, such as Aura Bath & Spa, is an example of a matte finish marketed for high humidity.

Can bathroom paint prevent mold?
No paint can guarantee that mold will not grow. A coating described as mildew-resistant may resist mildew growth on the painted surface, but it does not remove existing mold, fix a leak, or correct persistent dampness. Sherwin-Williams warns that walls kept damp by poor ventilation can develop surfactant leaching or peeling, even when using latex coatings. Sherwin-Williams’ ventilation and moisture guidance
Before painting, address the source of water staining or ongoing moisture. Use the bathroom’s ventilation system consistently and allow surfaces to dry. If there is active leakage, recurring condensation, or visible mold, resolve that issue before applying a new finish. Paint is not a substitute for mold remediation or waterproofing.

- Use for a variety of indoor and outdoor project surfaces including wood, metal, plaster, masonry or unglazed ceramic
- Water-based acrylic formula is low odor, resist chips and provides long-lasting protection
- Covers up to 120 sq ft and dries to touch in 30 minutes for quick project completion
- Semi-gloss finish minimizes surface imperfections, goes on smoothly and provides excellent hide
- Prior to application sand surfaces with 180/200 grit sandpaper, then wash with a degreaser, allow the surface to dry and apply paint
How to choose for your bathroom
- Confirm bathroom suitability: Select a product whose label or technical sheet supports bathroom or high-humidity use.
- Match the finish to the room: Consider satin or semi-gloss for a readily cleanable finish, or a bathroom-specific matte if you prefer a less reflective look.
- Check exposure and substrate: Ordinary painted drywall is not the same as a shower interior or a surface directly and repeatedly wetted. Follow the surface manufacturer’s specified system for directly exposed areas.
- Review prep and primer instructions: Requirements vary for sound painted walls, glossy coatings, bare surfaces, stains, and damaged areas.
- Account for ventilation: A well-ventilated bathroom is a better environment for paint performance than one that stays damp.
Prepare the surface before repainting
Clean the surface and make sure it is sound and dry before coating it. Do not paint over mildew; remove it first and follow the cleaner’s safety directions. If water has left a stain, correct the cause and then use a stain-blocking primer if the paint manufacturer’s instructions call for one. Sherwin-Williams specifically recommends stain-blocking primer after correcting water stains. Sherwin-Williams Interior Product Selection FAQ
There is no single primer or cure time that applies to every paint, wall, and bathroom. Follow the chosen coating’s current technical sheet for preparation, primer compatibility, application conditions, and cure time. High-humidity wall paint is not a waterproofing system for shower interiors.
