The Bézier Game is a free browser game that teaches pen-tool control by asking you to rebuild target outlines with as few anchor points (nodes) as possible. You place anchors, drag Bézier handles, and stay within a node budget, so both visual accuracy and efficient construction affect your result.

What The Bézier Game teaches
The game isolates the skills behind vector drawing: deciding where an anchor belongs, controlling the direction and length of its handles, and switching cleanly between straight segments and curves. Its central lesson is that more points are not automatically better. A smooth, economical path usually needs fewer, better-placed anchors.

How a round works
- Choose a stage and inspect the target outline.
- Use the pen tool to place nodes around the shape.
- Drag handles to match curved sections and use straight segments where appropriate.
- Finish the path and review the result against the node allowance and ideal solution.
- Repeat the stage to improve placement, smoothness, or node count.
The current interface includes undo, redo, clear-stage, angle-snap, and control-handle unlinking shortcuts. The scoreboard reports how many nodes you used, how many were available, and how many nodes remain relative to an ideal solution. That feedback turns a vague “does this look right?” exercise into a measurable efficiency problem.

Why the node limit changes how you draw
In ordinary illustration software, adding points can hide an imprecise decision. The Bézier Game makes that strategy costly. A node budget encourages you to place anchors at meaningful changes in direction—often at extrema or corners—and let handles describe the curve between them.

- Too many nodes: the outline may follow the target locally but become lumpy and exceed the allowance.
- Too few nodes: the path is efficient but cannot match important corners or changes in curvature.
- Well-placed nodes: the path stays smooth while meeting the visual target within budget.
For practice, compare your first attempt with a second attempt made after identifying where a handle—not another anchor—would solve the mismatch.
Is it free, and where does it run?
The Bézier Game is a free online game, not a boxed product or a paid downloadable edition. The official interface currently states, “This game requires keyboard and mouse.” A mouse or trackpad is therefore part of the expected setup, along with a desktop or laptop browser.
Touch-device users are directed to The Boolean Game, a separate experience designed for any device. That redirection means the official Bézier Game should not be treated as a tablet-first tool, even if a particular browser happens to load parts of it.

Does it help with Illustrator or Figma?
Yes, as focused skill practice. Illustrator and Figma both rely on the same underlying decisions about anchors, Bézier handles, straight segments, and smooth joins. The game gives you repeated, constrained repetitions of those decisions without requiring you to invent a project first.
It does not replace learning either application’s interface, layer model, typography, export settings, or broader drawing workflow. Use it to improve pen-tool muscle memory, then transfer the technique to a small exercise in your chosen editor.
Using it in a classroom or workshop
Ryan Bugden’s public repository extends the idea beyond individual browser practice. It is explicitly organized for educators and includes materials for projected team play, generated PDFs, lectures on Bézier fundamentals, and an interactive De Casteljau demonstration covering linear through higher-order curves.

Documented team format
- Use DrawBot to generate the session PDFs after selecting a school or event title, two team names, and a font set.
- Project the activity on a blackboard or whiteboard.
- Have contestants from two teams draw simultaneously.
- End the round with a “Done!” call, reveal the answers, and total the scores.

Start with accuracy
On your first pass, prioritize a clean silhouette and note where the curve departs from the target. Resist adding points simply because a segment looks difficult.
Reduce the path
On the next pass, remove anchors that do not mark a corner or a meaningful change in curvature. Rebuild the section with longer, better-oriented handles.

Use the shortcuts deliberately
Undo and clear-stage make experimentation inexpensive; angle-snap helps with deliberate straight directions; unlinking handles lets you treat either side of a node independently when a smooth, symmetrical handle is not appropriate.
Transfer the result
After a successful stage, recreate a simple icon or object in Illustrator or Figma. The transfer exposes which part of the task was pen-tool technique and which part was application-specific workflow.
