The Colors of Motion turns a film into a timeline of its changing palette: each line represents the average color of one frame, and the lines are stacked in sequence. The result makes color progression easy to see, but it is an abstraction—not a record of the film’s scenes, composition, or story.
How The Colors of Motion visualizes a film
The project reduces every frame to one average color. Arranged from the beginning of a film to the end, those colors form a compressed visual sequence. Broad shifts become visible: a long stretch of cool tones, a sudden warm passage, or a gradual move from bright colors toward darkness.
That compression is also the main limitation. An average color cannot show where a color appears in the frame, what objects are present, or how the image is composed. The visualization says something about a film’s changing palette, not everything about its images—and it does not measure how viewers respond to them.
How the original process worked
In an interview published October 16, 2014, creator Charlie Clark described using ffmpeg to export movie frames as JPEGs, then running a script to calculate the average color of each frame. The resulting color data was matched to the corresponding frames on the site. Clark’s interview gives this first-person account of the project’s early workflow.

Contemporary reporting described a bash script invoking ffmpeg and a PHP script that extracted average colors, with values stored as JSON hex codes. Those accounts document the 2014 process; the current official About page does not say whether the implementation has since changed.
Who created it, and what happened next
The official site credits Charlie Clark with creating, designing, and developing The Colors of Motion. It describes the work as an ongoing project that began as a data visualization and later expanded to include prints. The About page also says the project won a Webby in 2015, but does not specify an award category.

What the 2014 site offered
When Tech Times covered the project on August 26, 2014, it reported a catalog of 20 films and described visitors choosing a title, scrolling through its palette, and clicking a color to reveal its hex value. The films named included Frozen, The Matrix, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and Avatar. This is a dated snapshot of the site’s catalog and interaction, not a current film count or a guarantee that the same features remain available. Tech Times’ 2014 report describes that earlier version.

How to read the visualization
- Look for sequence: The stacked lines represent color over time, so a band of similar hues suggests a sustained palette rather than a single isolated moment.
- Remember what is averaged away: Each line condenses an entire frame to one color and cannot preserve spatial detail or identify a particular subject.
- Distinguish color from meaning: A palette can reveal visual change, but the visualization alone cannot establish a film’s mood, intent, or audience effect.
