To make isometric-style pixel art, first choose a consistent projection and diagonal slope, then use a guide grid to construct simple forms before adding shading and detail. Game artists often call a 2:1 pixel slope “isometric,” but that convention is technically dimetric rather than true isometric projection.
A good beginner exercise is to draw a cube, check that its edges follow the same axes, then adapt it into a crate or house. Krita can help with projection guides and rulers; Aseprite can organize sprite layers, animation frames, and reusable tiles.
What does isometric mean in pixel art?
Isometric drawing belongs to the axonometric family of projections, which represents three-dimensional forms without perspective convergence. In true isometric projection, the three axes use equal scale. Dimetric projection uses equal scale on two axes and a different scale on the third; trimetric projection uses different scales on all three.
In game art, “isometric” is often used informally for a practical dimetric style. One common pixel-art convention uses a 2:1 diagonal: the line advances two pixels horizontally for each pixel vertically. Krita’s documentation presents this as a game-safe example, not a universal rule. Choose a convention that fits your project and keep it consistent.

Choose a projection and set up guides
Before drawing an object, decide which diagonal slope and tile convention you will use. A guide grid or paired parallel rulers can help keep edges aligned, but it does not replace checking whether each shape reads clearly.
- Choose the axes. Decide the direction and pixel rhythm of the two ground-plane axes.
- Set up a guide. Use a grid, diagonal rulers, or projection assistants in your drawing software to keep parallel edges consistent.
- Draw a test diamond or tile. Check that its opposite sides follow the same slope and that repeated copies meet cleanly.
- Test a simple form. Draw a cube on the guide and inspect its silhouette and visible planes.
- Keep checking the guide. Revisit it when adding new objects or reusable tiles so their edges remain compatible.
Krita’s manual describes setting up diagonal rulers and snapping them to a grid. These guides help establish consistent directions; they do not automatically make every shape or tile correct.
Practice with simple forms
Build an object from a few clear planes before adding texture. Start with a cube, then change its proportions or features to make a crate, a house, or a roof. These exercises help you see how the chosen axes describe volume.

A creator tutorial suggests practicing cubes, cylinders, pyramids, cones, and roofs. Use these as practice prompts rather than a mandatory order. For each shape, check that its edges agree with your selected projection and that the silhouette is recognizable without surface detail.
- Draw a cube. Establish the top and two visible sides, keeping parallel edges aligned to your guides.
- Turn it into a crate or house. Change the proportions and add only a few structural features.
- Try a cylinder and a cone. Use simple shapes to practice representing curved forms with deliberate pixel clusters.
- Draw a roof or pyramid. Check that the sloping edges remain consistent with the ground-plane axes.
- Review the silhouette. If the object is unclear, simplify and correct its construction before adding detail.
Add shading after the form reads clearly
Once the construction is easy to read, use shading to distinguish the visible planes. Decide how light and shadow will separate the top and sides, then apply that logic consistently. Keep surface marks subordinate to the shape: texture cannot fix an unclear silhouette or misaligned edges.
At each stage, check the artwork at its intended size. Look for inconsistent diagonal steps, corners that do not meet, and reused tiles that fail to align. A grid is a consistency aid, not a substitute for visual review.

Choose a drawing workflow
Krita and Aseprite support different parts of an art workflow. The right choice depends on whether you need projection guides, sprite organization, animation, or reusable tile references.
| Need | Relevant documented capability | Tool |
|---|---|---|
| Projection guides and rulers | Projection assistants and diagonal rulers for consistent drawing directions | Krita |
| Sprite organization | Layers, frames, and cels for structuring sprite content | Aseprite |
| Reusable tiles | Tilemap layers that reference tiles from a tileset; documented as available since version 1.3 | Aseprite |
These tools serve different needs; the documentation does not establish one as universally better. Check current software documentation for details relevant to your version and project.
Practice and troubleshooting
Make a small set of shapes that share the same axes, then arrange or reuse them as tiles. If the result looks wrong, check the construction before adding more detail.

- Edges disagree: Check that parallel edges use the same chosen slope and pixel rhythm.
- Tiles do not meet: Review the tile convention, grid, and repeated edges.
- The object is hard to recognize: Simplify the silhouette and planes before adding surface marks.
- Reused tiles look inconsistent: Check that they follow the same axis and tile convention.
- Shading obscures the form: Reduce detail and make the main planes clear first.
FAQ
Is a 2:1 slope true isometric projection?
No. True isometric projection uses equal scale along all three axes. A 2:1 pixel slope is a common game-art convention that is technically dimetric, though artists often call it isometric.
