For ordinary window glass, mix 1/2 teaspoon liquid dish soap, 1/4 cup distilled vinegar, and 2 cups water. New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension gives those exact proportions and recommends soaking a sponge or small cloth, wringing it nearly dry, wiping the glass, and then drying with a paper towel or clean cloth. Remove loose soil first so you do not turn grit into scratches or muddy streaks. See the NMSU Green Cleaning Methods for Your Home guidance for the original formula.

The mixture is a cleaner for routine spots, smears, and ordinary soil—not a proven disinfectant. Good technique matters as much as the ingredients: use very little liquid, work in sections, and clean the two sides in different directions so you can identify which surface still has streaks.

Measure the recipe rather than adding ingredients by eye. The small amount of dish soap helps loosen greasy fingerprints and dirt, while distilled vinegar supplies mild acidity and water carries the mixture across the glass. NMSU presents this as a three-ingredient household window-cleaning solution.

| Ingredient | Amount | Practical role |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid dish soap | 1/2 teaspoon | Helps lift dirt, fingerprints, and greasy soil |
| Distilled vinegar | 1/4 cup | Provides a mild acid that can help with some mineral residue |
| Water | 2 cups | Dilutes the cleaner and provides enough liquid to wet the cloth |
Use distilled vinegar, not an unknown cleaning concentrate, because the cited formula is specified with distilled vinegar. The recipe is intentionally dilute. Adding extra soap can leave a film that is harder to remove, so more is not better.
How to mix it
- Put 2 cups of water in a clean container.
- Add 1/4 cup distilled vinegar.
- Measure 1/2 teaspoon liquid dish soap and add it last.
- Stir or swirl gently until the soap is distributed. Avoid whipping the mixture into a container full of foam.
- If you transfer it to another container, label it clearly as window cleaner. Never use a food container for storage.
A bowl works for the sponge method described by NMSU. A clean, clearly labeled spray bottle is an optional convenience for recipes used in spray form; Metro lists a spray bottle among practical containers for homemade cleaners. Spraying is not required, and the safest application is the one that leaves the glass damp rather than dripping.
Prepare the window before wet cleaning
Look at the glass in good light. Remove cobwebs, loose dust, and gritty surface soil with a paper towel or soft, dry cloth before applying liquid. NMSU specifically recommends removing surface soil first. Skipping this step can spread abrasive particles over the pane and make a clean surface look cloudy.

- Move ornaments, plants, and other items away from the sill so they are not splashed.
- Work out of direct heat when possible; rapid drying can make wiping marks more visible.
- Use a fresh, lint-free cloth or a clean sponge. A cloth that already contains polish, fabric softener, or oily residue can deposit a new film.
Application: the low-moisture method
- Soak a sponge or small cloth in the solution.
- Wring it thoroughly. It should be wet enough to loosen soil but not dripping down the frame.
- Wipe a manageable section of glass, overlapping your passes so no narrow dry strip is missed.
- For stubborn spots, make a second gentle pass instead of scrubbing hard or adding concentrated soap.
- Immediately dry the section with a paper towel or clean cloth. Replace a towel when it becomes damp or visibly dirty.
Keep liquid off painted, wooden, or metal frames as much as practical. The cited instructions address ordinary glass; they do not establish that this acidic mixture is safe for every frame finish, seal, tint, film, or specialty coating.
How to prevent and diagnose streaks
Clean the inside and outside in different directions
NMSU suggests wiping the inside of the glass in one direction and the outside in another. For example, use horizontal strokes indoors and vertical strokes outdoors. If a mark remains, its direction tells you which side needs another pass instead of making you clean both sides again.
Use less liquid, not more
Flooding the pane leaves diluted soil and soap to dry in irregular trails. A wrung-out cloth gives you control, especially near seals and corners. If you are using a squeegee, Metro describes it as a useful window-cleaning tool: pull it in consistent overlapping passes and wipe the blade between passes so it does not redeposit dirty water.

Dry completely
Drying is part of cleaning, not an optional finishing step. Work in sections small enough to wipe dry before the solution evaporates. A clean microfiber cloth is one suitable drying option mentioned by Bob Vila in its homemade-window-cleaner guidance: Bob Vila’s window-cleaner guide. Paper towels also follow the NMSU procedure.
Interpret common streak patterns
- Long vertical trails: too much liquid or a cloth that was not wrung out enough. Re-wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately.
- A hazy film over the whole pane: excess soap, dirty rinse water, or residue from a previously used cloth. Use a fresh cloth and the measured formula.
- Marks only on one side: use the inside/outside direction test to isolate the side, then clean that side once more.
- Cloudy patches that remain after drying: the residue may be mineral buildup or a surface/coating issue rather than ordinary fingerprints. Do not assume stronger vinegar will solve it.
What the ingredients can reasonably do
Arkansas Cooperative Extension explains the broad cleaning roles behind this kind of formula: vinegar is an acid that can be useful against some mineral deposits and hard-water stains, while detergents are useful for dirt, fat, and grease. Those are ingredient-level functions, not a guarantee that this exact dilution removes every deposit from every window. Heavy scale, paint specks, adhesive, and baked-on construction residue may require a method approved for the specific glass and coating.
On ordinary, uncoated glass, the recipe is suited to fingerprints, light grease, dust that remains after dry wiping, and everyday smears. Test an inconspicuous area first when you are unsure what kind of glass or film you have. Follow the window manufacturer’s current care instructions for tinted, coated, laminated, low-emissivity, etched, frosted, or otherwise specialty glazing.

Two-ingredient alternative: vinegar and water
If you do not want dish soap, both NMSU and Metro describe vinegar-and-water approaches. Metro’s published glass/window recipe uses 1 quart of warm water and 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar: Metro’s safe cleaning recipes. NMSU also lists a vinegar-and-water-only option on its cleaning page. The sources give these as alternatives, not as a controlled performance ranking against the three-ingredient mixture.
| Option | Measured formula | When it may fit | Application guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| NMSU three-ingredient cleaner | 1/2 teaspoon liquid dish soap + 1/4 cup distilled vinegar + 2 cups water | Routine glass soil where a small amount of detergent is useful | Wring out a sponge or small cloth, wipe, then dry |
| Metro vinegar-and-water recipe | 1 quart warm water + 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar | A soap-free glass recipe | Metro identifies a squeegee as a useful tool |
Choose one formula and use it as written. Switching proportions mid-cleaning makes it difficult to tell whether a streak came from technique, residue, or the mixture itself.

Safety rules that matter
Never combine vinegar with bleach
Do not mix this vinegar cleaner with chlorine bleach or products containing bleach. Acids such as vinegar can react with chlorine bleach and release dangerous gases. Metro’s guidance warns against combining bleach with acids including vinegar, and the University of Florida IFAS Extension likewise says bleach must not be mixed with vinegar, rubbing alcohol, ammonia, or other household cleaners: UF/IFAS Homemade Household Cleaners. Use one product at a time, and do not pour this mixture into a container that previously held bleach unless it has been appropriately cleaned according to the container and product directions.

Label and store it responsibly
Label any homemade solution with its purpose and ingredients. Keep it out of food containers and away from children, as recommended by Cooperative Extension cleaning guidance. Store it where children cannot reach it, and avoid leaving an unlabeled bottle on a counter where someone could mistake it for a drink or another product.
Protect your hands and surroundings
NMSU describes vinegar as a mild acid and says to use gloves if necessary. Wear gloves if your skin is sensitive, you have cuts, or you expect prolonged contact. Protect nearby wood, painted surfaces, stone, and metal from drips, because the reviewed sources do not establish compatibility with every material used around a window.
Cleaner versus disinfectant
Do not advertise or rely on this homemade formula as a disinfectant. Cleaning removes soil; disinfection requires a product and procedure demonstrated to kill specified microorganisms. Bob Vila distinguishes homemade cleaners from true sanitizers described as killing 99.9 percent of disease-causing pathogens, but that figure is a general description of proven sanitizers—not a test result for this vinegar-and-soap recipe. For illness-control needs, follow public-health guidance and the label of an appropriate registered disinfectant, rather than substituting this window cleaner.

- Specialty glazing: coatings, films, tints, and low-emissivity surfaces may have manufacturer-specific restrictions.
- Unsealed natural stone nearby: acidic vinegar can damage some stone surfaces if it drips or pools.
- Unknown residue or construction debris: identify the material and use a removal method approved for the glass before wiping broadly.
- Large commercial or high windows: use safe access equipment or a qualified window professional rather than balancing on furniture.
These limits do not mean the formula is unsuitable for ordinary household glass; they define where the available guidance stops. The window maker’s current care instructions take priority whenever they differ.
