Prince’s Love Symbol was designed in 1992, years before he officially used it as his name. Graphic designers Lizz Luce and Mitch Monson developed the mark with Prince’s team from a brief that fused the astrological symbols for Mars and Venus. Prince selected the form, adopted it publicly as his stage name on June 7, 1993, and returned to using “Prince” in 2000 after his Warner Bros. contract expired.
How did Prince come up with his symbol?
The familiar glyph emerged from a design assignment in 1992. Prince’s team asked Lizz Luce and Mitch Monson to create a distinctive, trademarkable symbol by combining the traditional signs associated with Mars, representing man, and Venus, representing woman. The designers worked through the night, and Prince quickly chose the version that became famous.
Monson later recalled that the selected drawing changed very little afterward: “The one you see now was almost untouched. We did very little adjustment to that particular mark at all,” he said in WIRED’s account.
The design was not simply a logo added after the fact. Prince wanted a form that could carry a feminine quality as well as masculine associations. Its curved scroll, loop and crossbar create a mark that is recognizable even without lettering.

The 1992 design process
A brief built from Mars and Venus
The starting point was the visual language of astrology. The designers were asked to merge the Mars and Venus signs rather than reproduce either one on its own. That brief supplied the symbol’s basic structure while leaving room for an individual, highly stylized result.
A separate account of the final production work
A 3D artist has described helping bring the graphic to final form during a rushed video-production assignment in April 1992. That recollection describes the artist’s role in the final graphic and animation workflow, not sole authorship of the concept. The Prince team had already been exploring a trademarkable design for months, and Luce and Monson are the designers credited with developing the mark.

Why the mark looks deliberately imperfect
The symbol’s unevenness is part of its character. Monson said Prince did not want a mechanically perfect construction: “But it was supposed to be that way; he didn’t want it to be perfect.” The slight imbalance keeps the mark from looking like a sterile geometric diagram and gives it a hand-shaped, almost talismanic presence.
What the symbol may mean—and what is documented
The documented design explanation is the fusion of Mars and Venus imagery and the attempt to combine masculine and feminine qualities. Viewers have also read the form as suggesting a cross, or as joining sexual and religious imagery. Those readings are visible possibilities rather than a complete, confirmed statement of Prince’s intentions.

That distinction matters because the symbol’s power comes partly from its openness. It can function as an emblem, a signature and a piece of abstract lettering without reducing Prince’s identity to one fixed message.
The timeline: design, album and name change

Why did Prince change his name to a symbol?
The name change happened during Prince’s conflict with Warner Bros. over control of his music and its release. The symbol gave him a way to separate his public identity from the name he believed the label controlled.

Prince later offered a personal explanation. In a 1999 Larry King interview quoted by The Washington Post, he said: “I wanted to move to a new plateau in my life and one of the ways in which I did that was to change my name, to sort of divorce me from the past.”

There was also a legal strategy behind the move. His then-attorney, Londell McMillan, recalled that Prince believed changing his name might void the Warner Bros. contract. McMillan said that it did not work legally, so the symbol should not be described as a successful escape from the agreement. Prince continued under the symbol until the contract expired, then began using “Prince” again in 2000.

Who designed Prince’s Love Symbol?
Lizz Luce and Mitch Monson are the designers credited in WIRED’s reporting with working on the symbol for Prince’s team. Prince was not a passive recipient of a finished corporate logo: he supplied the creative direction, selected the final form and insisted on details such as its intentionally imperfect balance.
The available accounts therefore support a collaborative origin: Prince’s brief and approval, Luce and Monson’s design work, and additional production help during the hurried 1992 visual-development process.
Why the symbol remains so recognizable
The mark solves several visual problems at once. It is compact enough to act as a signature, unusual enough to be identifiable at a glance and ambiguous enough to invite interpretation. Its Mars-and-Venus foundation gives it a recognizable conceptual origin, while the asymmetry and sweeping curves keep it from reading like a standard astrological icon.
