Ferrari’s Prancing Horse began as an emblem associated with Italian aviator Francesco Baracca. Ferrari says Baracca’s family suggested Enzo Ferrari adopt it for good luck; the symbol first appeared on Scuderia Ferrari cars at the 1932 Spa-Francorchamps 24 Hours. Its central horse has endured, while the badge’s format and details have seen more modest changes.
What does the Ferrari Prancing Horse mean?
Ferrari’s account links the horse to Francesco Baracca, an aviator and First World War hero. The company says Baracca’s family suggested Enzo Ferrari use the emblem for good luck. That is Ferrari’s account of the adoption; it does not settle every question about the horse’s earlier history.
The yellow field refers to Modena, Ferrari’s home city, in the company’s telling. A green, white and red band above it represents the Italian tricolour. Ferrari’s history of the Prancing Horse describes the origin and symbolism.

When did Ferrari first use the horse?
The emblem debuted on Scuderia Ferrari cars on 9 July 1932, at the Spa-Francorchamps 24 Hours. These were Alfa Romeo racing cars entered by the Scuderia—not Ferrari road cars. The distinction matters: Scuderia Ferrari was founded in 1929 as a racing organization and Alfa Romeo branch, before Ferrari began building its own cars. Ferrari and the Museo Francesco Baracca both identify the 1932 Spa appearance.
How the Ferrari symbol is arranged
The horse is the shared centerpiece, but Ferrari uses two familiar badge formats. Ferrari’s corporate document distinguishes the shield associated with Scuderia racing from the rectangular trademark badge bearing the Ferrari name. Their elements are related, not interchangeable labels for one identical mark.

- Made from high-grade zinc alloy and crafted with a vibrant enamel coating, this badge delivers a long-lasting gloss that plastic competitors can’t match—even after intense sun exposure or car washes.
- Simply peel and stick—designed to securely adhere to any flat vehicle surface without tools. Perfect for doors, rear panels, or even toolboxes.
- Pay homage to Italian excellence with a refined green-white-red palette. A visual cue of legacy, passion, and motorsport pride.
- Equipped with premium adhesive that endures extreme temperatures, highway speeds, and high-pressure washes—without peeling or falling off.
- Ferrari owners deserve metal, not molded plastic. This emblem feels right—weighty, crisp-edged, and worthy of your exotic machine.
| Feature | Racing shield | Rectangular trademark badge |
|---|---|---|
| Outline | Shield | Rectangle |
| Main image | Black Prancing Horse | Black Prancing Horse |
| Field and top band | Yellow field with green, white and red band | Yellow field with green, white and red band |
| Lower lettering | “S F” initials | “Ferrari” wordmark |
| Association | Scuderia racing emblem | Ferrari trademark mark |
The exact application can vary by context; the two forms should not be assumed to appear identically across every car, product or use. The distinction is set out in Ferrari’s corporate identity material.
How the logo evolved over the years
Ferrari characterizes the present emblem as essentially similar to the original. The record points to continuity of the horse and restrained refinement rather than a sequence of wholesale redesigns. The key milestones are:

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What is known—and not known—about the horse’s earlier origin?
Ferrari says the horse was Baracca’s emblem and that his family proposed its adoption. The Museo Baracca documents the connection and notes differences in Ferrari’s shield graphics, including the horse’s upturned tail. Those accounts establish the association and the Ferrari adoption story; they do not provide a complete resolution of every theory about the horse’s earlier heraldic history. It is safest to describe the symbol as associated with Baracca and to attribute the adoption story to Ferrari.
