Color can influence how people perceive a brand, but it is not a universal code: the same hue can suggest different things depending on the audience, culture, product and setting. Choose brand colors by starting with the impression you want to create, then weighing category recognition, audience response, distinctiveness, accessibility and how the colors will reproduce in their intended medium.

What does color psychology mean in branding?

Color psychology in branding is the study and practical consideration of how color relates to perception, emotion, judgment and behavior. A scholarly review by Andrew J. Elliot and Markus A. Maier in Annual Review of Psychology surveys links between color and affect, cognition, behavior, consumer responses, and evaluations of food and drink. The authors also caution that the field was still developing and that stronger real-world recommendations require more evidence about when effects occur and what moderates them. Read the review.

For a brand, that means color is best treated as one part of a larger impression—not a guaranteed trigger. A color that feels appropriate for one product, market or audience may feel wrong in another. Ben Jura’s American Marketing Association discussion emphasizes the fit between color, brand positioning, audience, culture and context. Read the AMA guidance.

How do I choose the right color palette for my brand?

  1. Define the position before choosing hues

Write down what you want customers to understand about the brand and the experience the product offers. Is it primarily functional, sensory or social? What should the palette help communicate? Starting with those aims makes it easier to judge whether a color belongs, rather than relying on a one-word association such as “blue means trust.”

  2. Map category conventions and competitor colors

Look at the colors customers already encounter in your category and note where competitors cluster. Familiar choices can make an offer easier to recognize; a departure can help a brand stand apart, but may also make the product or category less immediately legible. Decide how much recognition you need and where differentiation matters most.

  3. Consider the actual audience and market

Color associations and preferences are shaped by culture and experience. Do not assume that customers in different countries, communities or age groups will read a hue in the same way. Research the people you intend to reach in the relevant market, and show them the colors in realistic brand examples rather than asking only about isolated color chips.

  5. Check accessibility before finalizing

Confirm that text and interface elements remain distinguishable against their backgrounds. Do not rely on color alone to identify a link, error, required field, status or action; pair it with text, shape, an icon, a pattern or another visual cue. W3C’s guidance for WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.1 explains this requirement and its rationale. Read W3C’s Understanding Use of Color.

Consider contrast while the palette is still being developed, not only after colors have been selected. W3C’s contrast guidance explains the contrast criterion for text and images of text.

  6. Specify colors for the medium

A digital color choice does not guarantee the same appearance on every display or in print. Screens, inks, paper stocks and suppliers can affect reproduction. For print branding or packaging, physical references can help teams browse and communicate process colors. Pantone describes its CMYK Color Guide Set—Coated & Uncoated as a fan guide containing 2,868 CMYK colors, including for branding and packaging applications. See Pantone’s guide details. A physical guide is relevant to print-oriented work; it is not necessary for a digital-only palette.

How should I compare two candidate palettes?

Use the same questions for every option, preferably with realistic mockups and feedback from the intended audience. A palette that performs well on one dimension may involve a trade-off elsewhere.

Evaluation factor Question to ask
Positioning fit Does this palette suit the brand’s intended character and the experience of the product?
Audience and cultural fit How does the intended audience interpret it in the market where it will appear?
Category legibility Does it help customers recognize what the product is, or does it depart from category conventions in a confusing way?
Distinctiveness Does it stand apart beside competitors without losing relevance to the category?
Accessibility Can customers distinguish text and interface elements, and understand important information without relying on color alone?
Production fit Can the colors be specified and reproduced for the screens, paper, inks and suppliers the brand will use?

What should you take from color psychology research?

Use findings about color to develop testable ideas, not promises. Research supports examining how color relates to responses, but the scholarly literature’s limits on boundary conditions and real-world generalizability make universal rules risky. Applied choices should be judged against the brand, audience, category and actual setting—not against a fixed chart of what each color supposedly means.
