The earth sculpture that blends into its surroundings at The Lost Gardens of Heligan is the Mud Maid, a sleeping figure made by artists Pete and Sue Hill. Its changing appearance comes from weather and living plants taking hold on its surface—not from a mechanical or scheduled seasonal transformation.
What is the earth statue called?
It is the Mud Maid, also written Mudmaid, at The Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall. Heligan calls it the Mud Maid, and the artists use Mudmaid; “Mud Day,” a name used in one article matching this topic, is incorrect. Heligan’s Woodland page describes the sculpture as part of a woodland landscape where artworks emerge among the trees.
Why does the Mud Maid change appearance?
Plants have colonised the sculpture’s surface, and their growth changes how it looks over time. The artists say pioneer plants and algae appeared first, followed by ivy on the body and moss on the face. They planted wood sedge for its hair, but montbretia later overtook it. The artists also note that the Mud Maid and the nearby Giant are in partial shade, a setting that helped plants establish without constant watering. The sculpture’s appearance can vary with weather and changing plant cover, but the available accounts do not establish a precise plant calendar or guarantee what it will look like in a particular month. The Royal Horticultural Society likewise describes Heligan’s woodland sculptures as cloaked in “moss, foliage and seasonal growth,” explaining how they blend into the landscape. How was it made?
Pete and Sue Hill created the Mud Maid as a five-metre-long sleeping figure. They first imagined a mermaid with a fish tail, but the name “Mudmaid” caught on. The artists describe a timber armature covered with windbreak netting and a mixture of clay, straw and cement, then hessian scrim. They used a stronger cement mixture for the head and hand. Does it last, and has it needed repair?
The Mud Maid is not a visually fixed or necessarily permanent work. Sue Hill, its co-creator, writes: “I don’t think I would describe them as truly permanent; they have weathered and changed over time, and will continue to do so, without a more active maintenance regime.”

The artists say that in 2012 they remade the hand in hypertufa after frost and foot traffic damaged some fingers, and shored up the timber frame. This is their account of the repair and maintenance, not a current condition report.

Where can you see the Mud Maid?
Heligan says the Mud Maid waits to be discovered along its sheltered Woodland Walk, alongside the Giant’s Head and Grey Lady. Its woodland covers 60 acres and is described as traditionally managed. How does it fit into the artists’ other work?
The Mud Maid is part of Pete and Sue Hill’s Green Women series. The Eden Project describes Eve, a related living sculpture by the Hills dated 2005–2007, as made from Eden clay, mirrors and planted grasses, and identifies the Mudmaid as its precursor. Eden Project: Eve
