The Mysterious Roman Dodecahedron Was Possibly Just for Knitting

Knitting gloves is one theory about the mysterious Roman dodecahedron—not a confirmed answer. Here is what the artifacts, find contexts and competing interpretations actually establish.

No one knows what Roman dodecahedra were used for. Knitting gloves is a plausible modern explanation, but it is only one hypothesis among many. The artifacts’ distinctive shape is certain; their purpose remains unresolved.

What is a Roman dodecahedron?

Roman, or Gallo-Roman, dodecahedra are rare hollow copper-alloy objects. Each has twelve pentagonal faces, a circular opening in every face and knobs at the corners. The apertures and decoration vary from example to example.

English Heritage says 120 have been found across the Roman Empire, with none reported in Italy, Spain, Africa or the Mediterranean. A Jagodina museum account gives a count of 116 and describes finds as concentrated mainly north of the Alps. Those figures belong to different published inventories and dates, so neither should be treated as a permanent total.

Lord of Battles Roman Bronze Metal Dodecahedron | Lost-Wax Cast Ancient Artifact Replica | Mysterious Relic for Collectors & History Lovers - 82 Grams (Solid Bronze (Antique))
  • Historical Replica – Inspired by real Roman dodecahedrons from the 2nd–3rd century CE, this recreates one of archaeology’s greatest mysteries.
  • Material & Casting - Crafted from solid bronze using traditional lost-wax casting. This process creates defined surface detail and consistent shape. With an approx weight of 82 grams, it shows the density of solid bronze construction.
  • Display Size: Measuring 5.4 × 6.5 × 6.5 cm, it's compact & striking, ideal for shelves, desks, or cabinets where it instantly draws attention.
  • A Mystery That Still Fascinates – Scholars still debate its true purpose, was it a ritual object, measuring tool or astronomical aid? This captivating piece continues to spark curiosity, inspire conversation and serve as both an educational and decorative artifact.
  • Note: Our bronze pieces are crafted using lost-wax casting method. Since they are left uncoated for authenticity, the surface will gradually darken and develop a natural patina over time. To maintain its original shine, gently polish it occasionally with a non-abrasive metal polish.

One identifiable example is a bronze object in the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, probably found near Elst in the Netherlands. The museum dates it broadly to AD 1–300 and records a height of 7.5 centimetres. Its collection description says proposed explanations have not satisfactorily accounted for the object and that its purpose remains unclear.

Was the Roman dodecahedron used for knitting?

Possibly—but there is no proof. English Heritage lists knitting gloves alongside proposals such as a candle holder, sceptre head, die, range finder, surveying instrument, toy and a device connected with determining sowing dates.

The knitting proposal imagines yarn being worked around or through openings of different sizes, potentially producing gloves or other tubular items. Different apertures could have helped accommodate different finger or hand dimensions. That is a way the design might be used, not evidence that ancient people actually used it that way.

No securely associated textile, knitting tool or contemporary written description demonstrates a dodecahedron-based knitting method. A 2025 article in The Antiquaries Journal notes that there is no contemporaneous description or depiction of these objects and that their find contexts are varied. The absence of documentation does not disprove knitting, but it prevents presenting the idea as a recorded ancient practice.

Why do Roman dodecahedra have different-sized holes?

The varying hole diameters are one of the strongest reasons the objects invite functional explanations. A measuring, craft or optical device could require openings of known or graduated sizes. A knitting hypothesis likewise treats the apertures as working dimensions rather than decoration.

Yet a difference in size does not identify a function by itself. The holes may have been selected for a purpose we do not recognize, or they may combine practical and symbolic roles. Any convincing explanation must account for the apertures, the knobs, the hollow construction and the differences between individual specimens—not just one attractive feature.

What other uses have been proposed?

Proposal Why it has been suggested What is missing
Knitting or another craft aid Different-sized openings could guide yarn or other material. No securely associated textile, tool or ancient description.
Measuring or surveying instrument Graduated apertures and a regular form could support measurement or sighting. No surviving instructions or demonstrated operating method.
Optical distance instrument (dioptron) Professor Miroslav Vujović has favored this interpretation for a fragment from Deonica, Serbia. It is an individual scholar’s preferred proposal, not an established identification.
Astronomical calendar Vujović has also proposed a device for determining sowing time. No proof that the surviving objects functioned as calendars.
Candle holder The hollow body and openings could be read as a holder or ventilated enclosure. Finds do not consistently occur in domestic settings, and direct use marks are not decisive.
Toy, die or sceptre head The unusual form could have had recreational or ceremonial uses. No contemporary depiction or text identifies one of these roles.
Ritual or divinatory object The recurring polyhedral shape has symbolic associations in classical thought. Symbolic context does not prove that every example served the same ritual.

What do find locations tell us?

English Heritage cautions that discovery locations do not sort neatly into military, domestic or religious categories. The 2025 scholarly study examined objects with a recorded location and found that more than half came from settlements, just under one-fifth from military camps, about 8.5% from contexts with plausible sacred connections, about 7% from graves or necropolis areas, and about 5.5% from refuse pits without known sacred connections. Smaller shares came from hoards and rivers.

Those percentages describe that article’s documented sample, not a complete census of every known dodecahedron. They show why a universal explanation is difficult: the objects appear in civilian, military, funerary and possibly sacred settings.

Could the shape have been symbolic?

The regular dodecahedron also has a philosophical background. In Plato’s Timaeus, the fifth regular solid is associated with the universe. The 2025 article argues that this classical association and the objects’ repeated polyhedral form deserve consideration, and it describes ritual or divinatory interpretations as recurring scholarly possibilities.

What happened at Norton Disney?

During an amateur archaeological dig near Lincoln in summer 2023, a hollow copper-alloy dodecahedron was found at Norton Disney. Lincolnshire County Council’s April 2024 report described it as probably third- or fourth-century, about 8 centimetres tall and weighing 245 grams. It was unusually complete, found on a hilltop in a former pit.

The report said further excavation was planned, but it did not establish a function. Richard Parker, secretary of the Norton Disney History and Archaeology Group, said: “Despite all the research that has gone into our dodecahedron, and others like it, we are no closer to finding out exactly what it is and what it might have been used for.”

MaltipooMania Roman Dodecahedron Replica – Ancient Artifact Archaeology Collectible Historical Roman Empire Decor (Green Patina)
  • THE 2,000 YEAR OLD MYSTERY: Discovered across ancient Europe, the Roman dodecahedron remains one of history’s greatest unsolved puzzles — no one knows its true purpose.
  • EDUCATIONAL & THOUGHT-PROVOKING: Spark curiosity and learning—great for students, teachers, and history enthusiasts exploring ancient engineering, symbolism, and unexplained artifacts.

How should the theories be judged?

  • Account for the whole object: A proposal should explain the twelve faces, hollow body, knobs, aperture sizes and decoration together.
  • Fit the archaeological spread: It should remain plausible across settlement, military, funerary and potentially sacred contexts, or explain why the objects might have been repurposed.
  • Provide direct evidence: Contemporary descriptions, depictions, manufacturing traces or securely associated materials would be stronger than visual resemblance.
  • Allow for variation: Similar construction does not guarantee a single function for every example.

The sources currently available do not provide a controlled test that ranks every proposal. The most accurate conclusion is therefore limited: the objects’ repeated shape and materials are observable, while their use is not known.

What can a replica show?

English Heritage describes handling replica dodecahedra in an exhibition and provides a template for making one. A replica can help readers see how the openings, knobs and proportions feel in the hand, or test whether a proposed action is physically possible. It remains a teaching aid, however; success with a modern copy does not demonstrate the ancient function.
