Choose your room’s least changeable finishes and major furnishings before you choose the final wall color. Then compare paint undertones with those surfaces and test finalists in the room’s actual light before buying enough paint for the whole project. Designers Dana Arazi Levine and Lisa Quinn describe this order as the practical way to keep paint flexible instead of forcing rugs, upholstery, curtains, art, cabinets or flooring to fit an early color decision.

Why paint comes after the room’s permanent choices
Paint is usually the easiest major finish to change. Flooring, countertops, cabinetry, large furniture, fitted upholstery and substantial window treatments cost more, take longer to replace or cannot be swapped without construction. That difference in flexibility is the foundation of the rule.
Interior designer Dana Arazi Levine puts it plainly: “Paint colors are almost infinite, but rugs, curtains, upholstery, and art are not.” Her point is not that paint is unimportant. It is that a wall color can be selected from a much broader range after the room’s limited choices are known. Choosing paint first can leave you searching for a custom rug, accepting furniture you do not really want or repainting when a supposedly matching stone or fabric arrives.

Lisa Quinn applies the same logic to items that are difficult to paint or replace: flooring, counters, cabinets and large furniture. Those elements establish the colors and undertones the walls must live with. Paint should support that established palette rather than make the rest of the room accommodate a color chosen from a small card in a store.
This is designer guidance reported by House Beautiful on September 30, 2026, not the result of a controlled study. No named study, measured success rate or quantified savings figure establishes how often the sequence prevents a mistake. Its value is practical: it puts the most constrained decisions first and reserves the most adjustable decision for last.
What to settle before opening a paint fan deck
Make an inventory of what will remain in the room. Include both hard finishes and soft goods because each can influence how a wall color reads.
- Flooring, including wood stain, tile, stone, carpet and grout.
- Countertops, backsplashes and other fixed stone or composite surfaces.
- Cabinet doors, built-ins, trim and architectural millwork.
- Large furniture such as sofas, sectionals, dining tables, beds and wardrobes.
- Rugs, curtains, upholstery and cushions that are staying.
- Artwork and large decorative pieces that will remain visible.
- Architectural details such as fireplaces, exposed brick, beams and metal finishes.
Give priority to the items that are most expensive or disruptive to replace. A small cushion can be changed after painting; a connected run of cabinets generally cannot. If an item is temporary, label it as such so it does not unnecessarily narrow the color search.
How to compare undertones instead of broad color names
Names such as beige, gray, white, green or brown describe a family, not the complete visual behavior of a color. Two samples with the same broad label can look incompatible beside the same floor because one carries a warm yellow cast and the other carries a pink, purple or green cast.

Quinn recommends asking a more precise question: “You’re not asking ‘Is this brown?’ You are asking ‘Does this sample lean towards yellow, pink, purple, or green?’” Make that comparison beside the fixed finishes, not in isolation.
A practical undertone check
- Place the paint sample vertically beside the floor, countertop, cabinet or upholstery it must coordinate with.
- Step back far enough to see the sample and the finish together, rather than examining a tiny chip close to your eyes.
- Look for a cast that makes the finish appear muddy, pinker, yellower, bluer or greener than it does by itself.
- Repeat the check beside more than one dominant element. A color that works with the floor may clash with the countertop or sofa.
- Remove competing swatches while judging a finalist. A dozen neighboring colors can make each sample appear different from how it will read on a broad wall.
Warm and cool labels are only a starting point. A warm neutral can still lean pink; a cool gray can carry a green cast. The relevant question is whether the undertone supports the room’s actual materials.

A store card, phone display or photograph from another home cannot reproduce your room’s orientation, windows, bulbs, shadows and surrounding finishes. Interior designer Lindsay Atapattu explains why: “Factors like lighting, room direction, and existing decor can significantly change how the color appears in a space.”
Move each finalist into the room and assess it where it will be used. Check walls near windows, in corners and beside the largest furnishings. A north-facing room, a room with strong afternoon sun and a room lit mainly by warm lamps can make the same paint appear substantially different.
Noelle Parks, in the official Dunn-Edwards “How to Choose Paint Colors” video transcript, states: “Rule number three, don’t assume that the color on the paint chips will look the same on your walls.” The warning applies even when the chip and the paint are technically the same color; scale, texture, sheen and surrounding surfaces change perception.

A step-by-step sampling method
- Finish the inventory. Photograph or record the flooring, counters, cabinets, major furniture, rugs, curtains, upholstery and artwork that will remain.
- Reduce the palette. Remove colors whose undertones clearly fight those materials. Keep a manageable group of close finalists rather than every attractive card.
- Buy tester paint or sample pots. A physical interior paint sample is more reliable than judging a screen. Buy enough to create a clearly visible test area for each finalist.
- Apply sufficient coverage. Dunn-Edwards’ guidance from Parks calls for a two-foot-by-two-foot sample area and at least two coats. This is company guidance, not a universal standard; follow the paint maker’s own application instructions for drying and recoating.
- Test on more than one wall when light varies. A color can look right on a window wall and wrong on a shaded wall. Position samples where daylight and evening light actually fall.
- Leave the samples in place. Atapattu’s recommendation, reported by House Beautiful, is at least 24 hours. Dunn-Edwards recommends living with samples for a few days and checking them at different times, including at night. These are sourced recommendations, not a scientifically established waiting period.
- Judge with the room dressed. Put the staying rug, curtains, artwork and furniture back in view. The final decision should reflect the room’s intended combination, not an empty shell.
- Record the winner and finish. Note the exact color name, sheen and the walls or trim for which it is intended before ordering the full quantity.
When a movable sample board is the better test
Painting directly on every wall can be inconvenient, especially in a rental, a finished room or a space where several colors are under consideration. Good Housekeeping quotes designer Eva Bradley on using a large painted sheet: “The larger size makes it much easier to see the full effect of the color, and being able to move the sample from wall to wall allows us to observe how light interacts with the paint in different areas of the room.”

Apply the same number of coats you would use for a wall test, allow it to dry, and attach it with painter’s tape. Move it between the brightest, darkest and most commonly viewed positions. A board does not replace checking the paint against the wall’s texture or existing color, but it makes repeated light comparisons easier and avoids covering several walls with test patches.
| Testing approach | What it shows well | Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| Painted wall patch | Color at the wall’s actual scale, texture and neighboring finishes | Harder to move; multiple patches may be needed in rooms with changing light |
| Two-foot-by-two-foot patch with two coats | A clearly visible, reasonably covered comparison following Dunn-Edwards guidance | The dimensions are a recommendation, not a universal testing standard |
| Movable painted poster sheet | Comparison on several walls and under different light directions | Does not fully reproduce wall texture or the effect of paint on the existing wall color |
| Store chip or digital image | Fast initial screening of broad color families | Too small or disconnected from the room to make the final decision reliably |
How long should you watch a sample?
Use the recommendations as a minimum observation plan rather than a magic deadline. Atapattu advises leaving wall samples up for at least 24 hours. Dunn-Edwards advises living with them for a few days and viewing them at different times, including at night. The extra time lets you see changes caused by morning and afternoon daylight, sunset, lamps and the room’s normal activity.
During that period, ask the same questions at each check:
- Does the undertone still work beside the floor, cabinets, counters and furniture?
- Does the color become unexpectedly pink, yellow, purple or green in a particular light?
- Does it look too dark in corners or washed out beside a bright window?
- Does it support the rug, curtains, upholstery and artwork that will remain?
- Do you like it at night, when the room is used most often?
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Choosing from a chip alone
A chip is useful for narrowing options, not for approving a whole-room color. Correct the mistake by applying a real sample in the room and checking it under changing light.

Picking paint before the rug or sofa
This reverses the flexibility rule. If the furniture has not been selected, choose a broad direction rather than a final paint color, then revisit the walls after the major pieces arrive.
Comparing labels instead of undertones
“Gray” or “beige” does not tell you whether a sample leans yellow, pink, purple or green. Place close shades side by side with the fixed finishes and make the undertone comparison explicit.
Testing only one wall
One wall may receive direct sun while another stays shaded. Move a painted board or add a second test area so the decision accounts for the room’s light variation.
Deciding in daylight only
Artificial light can alter the appearance after sunset. Follow the few-day observation approach and include evening and nighttime checks.
Painting too small or too thin a patch
A tiny, single-coat mark can hide the color’s full effect. Dunn-Edwards’ suggested two-foot-by-two-foot area and two coats provide a more useful comparison, while still remaining guidance rather than a guarantee.

Leaving the room empty while judging
Paint interacts with textiles, wood, stone, metal and artwork. Judge the sample with the furnishings and accessories that are actually staying.
Choosing a paint sample setup for your project
| Your situation | Most useful setup | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One dominant wall and stable daylight | Painted wall patch, two coats | Shows scale and the relationship to the adjacent floor and furniture |
| Several walls receive different light | Painted patches on key walls or a movable painted sheet | Lets you compare the same color in bright and shaded positions |
| Rental or newly finished room | Movable poster-paper sample attached with painter’s tape | Reduces temporary wall coverage while preserving portability |
| Many near-identical neutrals | Large samples placed beside fixed finishes | Makes subtle undertone differences easier to see than small chips |
Paint sample pots or tester paint are the primary tools. A paintable poster board and painter’s tape are optional accessories when portability matters. Retailer selection and prices vary by market and can change, so confirm current availability locally.
A decision checklist before buying full-room paint
- All major fixed finishes and furniture have been identified.
- The finalists have been compared beside those finishes, not only on a color card.
- Undertones have been assessed as yellow, pink, purple, green or another specific cast.
- Samples are large enough to read clearly and have adequate coats.
- At least one sample has been checked on each materially different light wall.
- The room has been viewed in morning, afternoon, evening and nighttime conditions when possible.
- The sample has been judged with the staying rug, curtains, upholstery, furniture and artwork visible.
- The exact color name and sheen have been recorded before the final order.
What this rule can—and cannot—promise
Following the sequence improves the quality of the decision by matching the most adjustable finish to the room’s established materials. It cannot guarantee that every viewer will perceive the color identically, that a sample will predict every wall perfectly or that repainting will never be necessary. The cited designer advice does not provide a statistical success rate or a dollar amount saved.
Its strongest claim is narrower and more useful: selecting the room’s constrained elements first, then comparing undertones and observing real samples over changing light, gives you more information before committing to gallons of paint.
The rule in one sentence
Finish the floor, counters, cabinets, major furnishings and other hard-to-change choices first; then select a paint color that harmonizes with their undertones and prove it in your room’s light with a properly sized sample before painting everything.
