The Painting Linked to Freud, Hitler, and Lenin: Böcklin’s Isle of the Dead

Arnold Böcklin’s Isle of the Dead was connected to Freud, Lenin, and Hitler in different ways. Here’s what the records say—and what they don’t.

The painting associated with Sigmund Freud, Adolf Hitler, and Vladimir Lenin is Arnold Böcklin’s Isle of the Dead (Die Toteninsel). Their connections were not identical: Freud reportedly kept a reproduction in his office, Lenin reportedly hung an image above his bed, and the work was one of Hitler’s favorite paintings.

What painting did Freud, Hitler, and Lenin have in common?

All three were associated with Böcklin’s Isle of the Dead, a painting that circulated widely in reproduction. The historical account from German History in Documents and Images says reproductions were reportedly found in bourgeois homes, helping explain how the image could reach admirers without their owning an original.

The distinction matters: the reported connections concern a reproduction in Freud’s office, an image above Lenin’s bed, and Hitler’s preference for the painting. They do not show that any of the three owned an original or shared the same motive for displaying or admiring it.

How was each man connected to the painting?

Sigmund Freud: a reproduction in his office

German History in Documents and Images reports that Freud kept a reproduction of Isle of the Dead in his office. That is separate from Freud’s better-known writing on Leonardo da Vinci and the Mona Lisa. A peer-reviewed article record describes his study of Leonardo and his interpretation of the Mona Lisa; it does not make that work the same association as the Böcklin reproduction.

Vladimir Lenin: an image above his bed

The same historical source reports that Lenin hung a version of the image above his bed. It identifies a version of the painting in an 1883 image record, but the claim about Lenin does not establish that he owned that original.

Adolf Hitler: a favorite painting

German History in Documents and Images describes Isle of the Dead as one of Hitler’s favorite paintings. This is a reported aesthetic preference, not the same kind of connection as the specific display locations attributed to Freud and Lenin.

What does Isle of the Dead depict?

The image shows a rocky island rising from water, dark cypress trees, and a small boat approaching. Its stillness and enclosed setting give the scene a solemn, death-associated atmosphere, but visual interpretation should not be confused with a single confirmed meaning for every element.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes Böcklin’s landscape as an imagined setting shaped by Mediterranean scenery and interprets the subject in terms of passage from life into death. That is the museum’s interpretation, not proof that Böcklin prescribed one definitive reading.

Why are there multiple versions?

Böcklin painted Isle of the Dead in multiple versions, so a reference to the painting does not automatically identify one particular object. The Met’s collection record concerns its 1880 version; German History in Documents and Images identifies an 1883 version in its historical image record. Those dates belong to those specific versions, not to a single, interchangeable object.

What did the painting mean to Böcklin?

The Met connects the work’s imagined landscape to Mediterranean scenery and to the transition from life into death. Its account also notes that Marie Berna commissioned the Met’s 1880 version as a memorial to her late husband. These details make a memorial reading especially relevant to that version, while leaving room for other interpretations of the image and its later appeal.

The painting’s associations with Freud, Lenin, and Hitler are historical claims about their relationships to the image; they do not by themselves explain why each person was drawn to it. Nor should Freud’s separate engagement with Leonardo and the Mona Lisa be folded into the Böcklin story.
