What are the five types of lines in art? A common classroom answer is vertical, horizontal, diagonal, curved, and zigzag. These names describe a line’s direction or shape—not every way artists use lines. Terms such as contour, gesture, implied line, and hatching describe a line’s role or effect, and can overlap with those five directions.

What counts as a line in art?
A line is a visible path or mark. It can be drawn deliberately, suggested by a series of marks, or created by the edge between two shapes. Lines can describe edges, build patterns and textures, guide the viewer’s eye, suggest movement, and contribute to tonal effects when grouped.
The five-item list below is a useful classroom framework, not a universal or complete taxonomy. For example, a lesson may classify lines as straight or wavy instead, or arrange the same five labels in a different order. Riverbank Primary School’s learning sheet names curved, zigzag, horizontal, vertical, and diagonal lines.

What are the five common types of lines?
Vertical lines
Vertical lines run up and down. They appear in subjects such as tree trunks, standing figures, and building edges. Their effect depends on how they are placed and what they describe.
Horizontal lines
Horizontal lines run from side to side. A horizon, tabletop edge, or long shadow may form one. They can organize a composition or divide areas of a picture.

Diagonal lines
Diagonal lines slant rather than running straight up-and-down or side-to-side. A sloping roofline, reaching arm, or path receding across a scene can create diagonals that direct attention through the composition.
Curved lines
Curved lines bend as they travel. They can follow rounded forms, describe a flowing shape, or lead the eye along a winding path.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do line direction and line function differ?
Direction answers “which way does the line run?” Function answers “what is the line doing?” A diagonal describes orientation; contour and gesture describe roles. These labels are not competing categories: one mark can be both a curved contour and a gestural line.

- Contour: A line that follows an edge. It may describe an object’s outer silhouette or an interior boundary, such as where one surface meets another. “Outline” usually refers specifically to the outer silhouette.
- Gesture: A quick, expressive path that records movement or the impulse of a mark. It can help capture the action or overall energy of a pose.
- Implied line: A path the viewer follows without a continuous stroke connecting it. Alignments, a figure’s gaze, or the arrangement of objects can suggest the line.
- Hatching: Groups of strokes used to create a tonal effect. Their spacing, direction, and density affect how light or dark an area appears.
These terms describe different aspects of line, so they can be combined. A contour may be diagonal; a gesture may curve; hatching strokes may repeat in parallel directions.
What can different lines show in a picture?
Line direction, weight, length, repetition, and texture can shape how a picture feels and where the viewer looks. A diagonal may contribute to a sense of movement, while a horizontal may help a scene feel settled—but neither direction has a fixed meaning on its own. The subject, surrounding shapes, and composition matter.
When interpreting a line, point to evidence in the artwork rather than treating a vocabulary chart as a psychological rule. Ask: Where does the line lead? What edge or movement does it describe? Is it repeated, heavy, faint, smooth, or broken? Then explain how those visible choices support your reading of the particular work.
A simple line-drawing practice
Drawing pencils and paper are enough for a basic exercise; the Sierra Leone Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education lists both among materials for art and design activities in its practical arts syllabuses. The source does not specify a required pencil grade, paper type, or brand.

- Choose a simple object and use contour lines to describe its outer silhouette and one or two interior edges.
- Make a quick gesture drawing of a person or animal in a pose, focusing on the movement rather than details.
- Draw a short path with a few separated marks, then arrange objects or point a figure’s gaze along a similar route to suggest an implied line.
- Group short strokes as hatching in one area. Vary their spacing to compare the tonal effect.
- Look at the results and describe which lines guide the eye, define edges, suggest movement, or create tone. Base your explanation on the marks you can see.
